“That’s not the way you were supposed to do it.” Ouch. 
I remember my friend told me a story about her boss at work.

Her boss was someone who always had a “right way” to do it. Nothing else made the cut. 

So when she created a new report and showed a proposal, the feedback was mostly negative and critical. It stung. 

And hey, sometimes constructive feedback is a real and very good thing. All for it. 

But we should LOOK for reasons to lift each other up and give each other support. Not the other way around.

A few weeks ago I heard a friend say they were feeling embarrassed because their new job didn't have a big pay raise.

And that really got me thinking.

People take new jobs for a ton of different reasons. We often celebrate the big pay raise and fancy title but we should also celebrate:

-A new job you actually like
-A new job in a new industry
-A new job that has a great manager
-A new job that has work/life balance
-A new job that gives better peace of mind

There's a lot of tough things about the job search. 

We should highlight reasons to celebrate folks any chance we get.

One time I had a candidate follow-up with me three times in one day about next steps for a role. Here’s what I said after it happened:

“Thanks for the reminder and I appreciate you following up!”

Now, context. The candidate was supposed to receive an update that day for next steps. For a lot of unforeseen reasons, there were delays.

They checked-in in the morning and I mentioned we’d have an update later that day. Then, more delays.

The candidate checked in during the afternoon and we had made progress, but still didn’t have all the info they needed. I said for sure by end of day.

At 4:45pm the candidate asked one more time if there was any progress. I had just received the final update and was happy to share!

A few lessons:

—Most recruiters don’t mind reminders when there’s a set expectation! It can help everyone stay on track.

—The candidate was pleasant, kind, and helpful when reaching out. Emotional intelligence is key.

—Sometimes there are delays and while we all can’t control the process, we can control how we respond. 

Recruiting is a two-way street. Job-seeking is a two-way street. 

Both ways, it’s people working together 🙃

We see people “flex” their success all the time, especially on social media. 
But what if success is less about what we have and more about who we are. 

I’m all for a good promotion and driving a car you like and doing well in your career. Honestly, that’s great. 

But if that’s the main goal or the end goal? Those things are fleeting. 

How we treat other people is a measure of what really matters to us. 

In fact, there’s a quote that says, “If you want to become great, you must serve others.”

That should be the bar for success.

I was talking to a friend awhile back and she just seemed so genuinely happy in her career. So I kept asking her questions. 

Her company wasn’t a big one and she didn’t have a crazy title or fancy resume. 

But she just couldn’t help but light up when talking about what she did. 

Good boss. 
Great people. 
Enjoyed her work. 
And compensated fairly. 

It makes you realize how many people DON’T have this in the workplace. 

We put a lot of pressure on dream jobs. But if you’re content with where you’re at? 

You may already be livin the dream.

If getting a job feels hard it’s probably because of one main reason:
It’s actually hard. 

Sometimes we have this perception that the further we are in our careers or the more experience we have, the easier it will be to get a job. 

While there’s some truth in that, generally speaking the job searching process doesn’t discriminate in difficulty for pretty much anyone. 

Some of the smartest people I know have struggled.
Some of the most experienced people I know have struggled. 
Some very senior leaders I know have struggled.

So I guess the point of this post is pretty simple: 

1. You’re not alone
2. Give yourself some grace
3. Keep going

It’s easy to get lost in the doubts, the noise, the busyness of day to day work, all of it. 
But don’t forget: The company hired you for a REASON!

There’s a lot of negativity that goes on in the job search and often with folks in their current roles. Some of that is warranted and makes sense. Some of that is just negativity for negativity’s sake.

Zooming out and looking at things from a bird’s eye view can be extremely helpful to remind ourselves of simple truths. One of them?

The company ACTUALLY wanted to hire you! 

Might be the reminder we need today.

Your resume should focus on marketing. Why?

Employers and recruiters should read your resume and think: The company and team will be better with this person! You do that by showing…IMPACT. 

Impact can be a buzzword in the workplace but essentially it is showcasing (i.e., marketing) the great work you have done and advocating for that work. 

Yes, your resume should list what you’ve done and your responsibilities. Of course! 

But it’s less about having 15 bullets for roles and pages of experience and MORE about showing how that experience is relevant to the role you’re applying for.

No, you don’t need fancy fonts, 6 pages, or to “beat the ATS” in order to get your job.

But strategically positioning yourself as a great candidate with relevant impact? 

Might be a good idea.
