7 hard lessons I've learned on the journey to "success":

When I graduated from college, I moved into a cramped studio apartment.

8 years later, I moved into my dream condo on the beach.

Here's what I learned:

I was very insecure about my apt. I was ashamed of how poor I was.

And I didn't date for years because of it.

It took me years to realize those insecurities were my own and money wouldn't fix them.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟓: 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞.

After college, I listened to a lot of my peers say:

"Once I get to X, THEN I'll do Z."

But the goalpost kept moving. And they never got "there."

Success means doing what isn't convenient.

I am surrounded by 10x more distractions today than I was 10 years ago:

In my 20s, I didn't have these options.

This was a gift.

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟕: "𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 "𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠".

Two days after I moved into my dream condo, I had my weekly therapy session.

"Now what?" I asked.

I'd spent a decade pounding the pavement, trying to get "here."

I got "here" and didn't know how to enjoy it.

Final story:

A few years ago, I ghostwrote for a Grammy-winning producer.

He flew me out to his home: a ranch with a home music studio.

In awe, I said, "Your creative process must be so different. You have so many options!"

He shook his head, "Actually, it's killing me."

He planned to rent a city studio apt to make his next album.

We think the journey will get easier once we've achieved our dreams or made a certain amount of money.

It's the opposite.

It gets harder.

So, enjoy wherever you are today.

Everything might change.

But the work won't.

When you graduate from high school or college, nobody owes you a paycheck. That's a lie we've been told.

Your value to a company only exists so long as that company needs you.

You are human labor leverage.

Whether you like it or not.

People spend their entire lives working jobs they hate chasing "safety."

So do entrepreneurs: "Once I make enough $$$, then I'll be safe."

These are lies we tell ourselves.

Life is full of Black Swan events.

You never know what could happen.

𝟒/ 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

As children, we put our parents on a pedestal—and project our wants and needs onto them.

Many people spend their entire adult lives continuing to do this.

Failing to accept their parents for who they are.

Responsibility scares people.

So instead of accepting responsibility, most people defer it.

• If you're a dramatic person, you're going to attract drama
• If you're an insecure person, you're going to attract insecure people
• If you're an egomaniac, you're going to attract egomaniacs

Platitudes don’t change your life.

Here’s the stuff that will.

17 rules for a life well lived:

1/ Make decisions from a place of abundance, not scarcity.

Your best ideas are ahead of you, not behind you.

2/ Avoid the quick and easy paths.

Shortcuts are always longer roads in disguise.

3/ Don't be fooled by your own achievements.

The moment you begin to lean on what you historically achieved, the potential for future achievements goes down.

4/ Aim to master the process, not celebrate the rewards or outcomes.

The only timeless reward is loving what you do, and improving at what you do, every single day.

5/ Honor the beginning, middle, and end of all relationships.

Your best friend today might not be your best friend tomorrow.

Your mentor, teacher, guru, might not be who you need to learn from in the next chapter.

6/ Build the life that's right for you.

Different people value different things in life.

Define your own purpose.

7/ Don't stress the final result. Just embrace the adventure.

There are no positive or negative outcomes.

Only lessons—some exciting, some painful, but lessons all the same.

8/ Live within your financial means.

The short-term enjoyment of "more things" doesn't outweigh the stress you inherit when you try to live a life you can't afford (yet).

9/ Never take for granted a genuine connection.

True friends are hard to find.

Honest conversations are rare.

Moments of vulnerability are special.

Soak these up.

10/ Be selfish and selfless.

Give to yourself, first.

So that you can give more to others.

And when you give, don't expect to "get" anything in return.

Enjoy the joy of being in a position to give selflessly in the first place.

11/ Who you are is more important than what you do.

Your career doesn't define you.

Your job title is irrelevant.

The measure of a person is who they are holistically, in all areas of their life.

12/ Do not hinder your own growth to preserve someone else's faulty foundation.

You are not responsible for their development (or lack thereof).

13/ Don't judge success by the day or week. Examine it over the course of a year or decade.

Growth is rarely spotted on a day-to-day basis.

It's like watching your hair grow.

Instead, monitor your trajectory over longer time horizons.

14/ Spend more time working on the "inner you" than the "outer you."

Confidence isn't your posture, clothes, watch, or car.

Beauty isn't the way you do your hair.

Everyone can see who you truly are, deep down.

So spend more time working on that version of yourself.

15/ Deprive yourself of what you want, to give yourself what you need.

16/ Always speak the truth.

As my grandma used to say, "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive."

17/ Play the long game.

Slow and steady consistency is the most powerful driver of growth.

Upwork and Fiverr are a race to the bottom.

• Low wages
• Long hours
• Endless competition

Writers on these platforms make 3 big mistakes.

And these mistakes keep them stuck earning minimum wage and churning out blog posts for 60 hours a week.

Mistake 1: Calling themselves a "Freelance Writer".

When you hear “Freelance Writer,” what do you think of? 

• Underpaid
• Over-caffeinated
• Jack-of-all-trades writer, who spends hours on Upwork competing for the “highest” price they can “underbid” the competition on

Is that what you want? 

Probably not.

So stop calling yourself a Freelance Writer and start calling yourself a Premium Ghostwriter.

Here's why:

• It implies you're MORE than a Freelance Writer
• It means you're hired by business leaders, not just a business
• It positions you as a business consultant (who happens to be an all-star writer)

What you call yourself matters.

Mistake 2: They wait for clients to come to them

As soon as you wait for people to come to you, they have all the pricing power.

They can set the terms of the engagement and the price and determine the work you do.

Instead, if you pitch clients, you set the terms.

• What you offer
• How much you charge
• The outcomes and results you create for clients

Instant upgrade.

Mistake 3: They work with an employee mindset

Business owners who are looking for writers aren't looking for another employee to manage.

They are looking to hire an expert who can come educate and advise them on how to solve a problem or achieve an outcome. But writers who are on Upwork or Fiverr position themselves as "do-ers": people who will do the tasks allotted to them. 

Instead, you want to be the trusted partner and consultant who proposes the plan (and also gets it done).

The business owner wants to do as little thinking as possible (they already have enough on their plate). If you can prove your worth, you will become indispensable to the business owner, which means you'll never run out of work with them.

Because once people find all-star writers, they want to hang onto them!

That's it!

If you can fix these 3 big mistakes 99% of writers fall into, then you'll always be able to make a (lucrative) living as a writer.

The “How To X Without Y” headline framework instantly hooks readers:

• How to achieve the "outcome" without the "obstacle"
• How to "get what you want" without the "hard part"

Here's how I use ChatGPT to create dozens of these headlines for any topic in 3 minutes:

For each of these topics, I want you to generate article titles using the "How to X (without Y)" format.

"X" is the goal of the subtopic.

For example:

If the topic is "Developing a training plan for first time marathoners."
Then the headline should be something like "How to develop a training plan without Y"

"Y" will be common obstacles people would face or objections as to why they wouldn't be able to accomplish "X."

For example: 

If the topic is "Developing a training plan for first time marathoners." 
And "X" is "develop a training plan."
Then the headline should be something like "How to develop a training plan without spending all your time on it"

Step 1: You are going to generate 7 common problems or objections ("Y") someone might have in accomplishing each topic outcome ("X"). Wait for my confirmation before moving to Step 2.

Step 2: On my confirmation, you will make 7 headlines for each subtopic, one for each of the problems for that subtopic.

Remember: You are creating "How to X without Y" titles for each objection someone might have in accomplishing the goal of the subtopic.
