But first, there are a few key things that you should know about Sweden.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻?

Swedish culture and mentality differ from American culture in a number of ways.

𝘖𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘸𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴.

One key difference is the emphasis on equality and social welfare in Sweden. Sweden has a long history of promoting social and economic equality, and this is reflected in the country's policies and social values. As a result, Swedes may place a greater emphasis on collective well-being and the common good, rather than individual success.

Another key difference is the value placed on personal space and privacy in Sweden. Swedes generally value their personal space and maybe more reserved in social interactions compared to Americans. They also place a strong emphasis on privacy and may be more reserved about sharing personal information.

Additionally, Swedes tend to have a more laid-back and relaxed approach to life compared to Americans. They value a work-life balance and prioritize leisure time and relaxation. This is reflected in their relaxed social norms and the importance of taking breaks, such as the tradition of "Fika".

𝙁𝙞𝙠𝙖 is a traditional Swedish coffee break that involves taking time to socialize with friends or colleagues over a cup of coffee and a snack, such as a pastry or sandwich. It is seen as an important part of Swedish culture and is often used as an opportunity to relax and unwind.

When moving to Sweden, it was not by performing tasks and attending meetings that I improved my Swedish most, rather it was during workplace Fikas. 

So if you want to win a local's friendship, then buy some delicious cinnamon buns from the local bakery and invite them for a Fika. 😋

𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀


Born in 1931, in a small village in Sussex, England, 
in the midst of the Great Depression. 

Dad is from a worker’s family, his father was a farm laborer,
his mother worked in the local pub. 

He was bright at school, despite never being able to afford a school uniform. 
Never in the limelight, a middle sibling.

After military service, stationed in post-war Germany, 
he started off as a book-keeping clerk in 1952. 
Worked hard and after several years qualified as a Tax Associate. 

Never a business tycoon, he carved out his own business,
loyal clients, over several generations,
many became lifelong friends.

Except for military service, he has always lived within a radius of 5 km. 
Retired at 84, when his friends had sold their businesses.
In December he turned 91. 

𝟯 𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙚:

- Lifelong learning, the love of books, regular visits to the local library.
- Kindness and acceptance of the different

Spending time in nature has a number of benefits for mental health and well-being. From reducing stress and anxiety to... 

improving mood and cognitive functioning, getting outside, and connecting with the natural world can have a powerful impact on our emotional and psychological well-being.

One of the key benefits of nature is its ability to 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨 and 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙭𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. 

Studies have shown that spending time in green spaces or engaging in outdoor activities can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increase feelings of calm and relaxation. 

Nature can also provide a sense of distraction and a break from the demands and distractions of daily life, which can help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

Exposure to natural light, especially in the morning, can help to regulate the body's internal clock and improve sleep quality. Outdoor activities, such as hiking or gardening, can also provide a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem.

Incorporating nature into our daily lives can be as simple as taking a walk in a nearby park or spending time in a backyard garden. Personally, I take a 𝙙𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝟯𝟬-𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙡𝙠, preferably during daylight, and 3 x 45 min brisk walks per week.

So the next time you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, consider stepping outside and taking in the beauty and tranquility of the natural world.

Coffee is not just a drink... 

𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦! 

Apart from the 𝘧𝘪𝘬𝘢 culture (see post in comments about that), 
Swedes drink coffee multiple times a day... 
morning, during working hours with 𝘧𝘪𝘬𝘢 breaks, 
after lunch, after work 𝘧𝘪𝘬𝘢 with friends, 
and in the evening after dinner. 

In fact, Swedes consume over 18 lbs per person each year - 
that's 2X versus Americans ... 
but still behind its Nordic neighbors...

The Finns 🇫🇮 have pole position with over 26 lbs. 🥇

Most countries have a coffee culture, not least the French and Italians. 

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮? 

According to Coffee Roasting champion Henrik Arvidsson, these are among the top 5: 

• Ethiopia 🇪🇹 
• Colombia 🇨🇴
• El Salvador 🇸🇻
• Costa Rica 🇨🇷
• Indonesia 🇮🇩


My morning favorite is a medium dark roast called Gran Dia, brewed on a Moccamaster. 

A visit to Starbucks or Espresso House - will oftentimes be an Americano.

When do you wish each other:

a Merry Christmas (𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘑𝘶𝘭), 
"a Happy Continuation" (𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴𝘢̈𝘵𝘵𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨) and 
a Happy New Year (𝘎𝘰𝘵𝘵 𝘕𝘺𝘵𝘵 𝘈̊𝘳)? 

As a foreigner in Sweden, it can be confusing which greeting to use.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year are said from First Advent until Christmas to those you don't see before the end of the year.

Merry Christmas is said from 1st Advent until 24th December.

Happy Continuation (of Christmas) from 25th December to 30th December

Happy Ending can be said (of the old year) on 30th and 31st December but some discourage this.

Happy New Year from the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve and 1st January. 

It is perfectly fine to say Happy New Year from 27th December also to those you will not see before the New Year.

Happy Continuation (of the New Year) from 2nd January until the thirteenth day of Christmas (6th January). 

Then you can say it throughout January to people you haven't met for a while.

As an entrepreneur, the fear of failure can hold you back from taking the risks necessary for growth and success. 

But the truth is, failure is just a stepping stone towards eventual success.

I remember when I first started my business, I was paralyzed by the fear of failure. But over time, I learned to embrace risk and overcome my fear of failure. 

One experience that stands out to me was when I decided to pitch in front of a senior Executive team. Despite feeling nervous, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and gave it my all. 

The experience taught me that taking risks and embracing failure is a stepping stone toward success.

If you're struggling with fear of failure, try setting small, achievable goals for yourself. This can help build your confidence and prepare you for bigger risks in the future.

It’s true what they say, 
life is a journey, not a destination, 
so we might as well enjoy the ride.

If we are always trying to get ‘there’ (wherever ‘there’) is, 
we’re missing out on where we are now. 

The gifts, beauty, and joy that each moment brings. 

When you stay in the present, you can see opportunities, take advantage of the unexpected, go with the flow and listen to that little voice inside you.

On the flip side, when you are attached to a particular outcome or the way things should be, you can become disappointed about the way things actually are. But they are what they are! 

If you can take each moment to accept, learn and grow, and not wish things were different, you’ll find greater happiness and fulfillment.

People often get stuck in the when/then trap. 

They say, ‘When I meet someone, I’ll be happy?’ or 
‘When I get the promotion I’ll be satisfied at work?’ or 
‘When I have more money, I’ll make the change.’ 

You can choose to be happy today. 
You can find what you need to be satisfied at work. 
You can make the change without the money.

Being present is powerful, especially when it comes to anxiety and stress. 
Our minds are often worrying about the past or anticipating the future. 
Being present helps calm your mind, center your thoughts and bring greater peace.

stop and think about what you can do now.

• Top movies: Ghost, Pretty Woman, and Home Alone
• TV shows: Cheers and Roseanne

... and 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘒𝘪𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 are teenage idols. 

Yet, this young guy in the UK gets hundreds of letters, daily.

Looking for pen pals, 
I put an ad in a German teenage music magazine, 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘰.
Circulation >1 million issues. 

Response 

>1500 letters from Germany, Austria, Belgium, and all over Europe - and

Canada 
Japan
Australia

Every letter was read. About ten became pen pals. 

In the coming years, I wrote hundreds of letters. 
Some became good friends. 
Some are still connected

In the process I learned many writing skills: 

• Using the right tone and language.
• Choosing the right format. 
• Writing to the reader. 
• Knowing my reader. 
• Being concise. 
• Keep it short. 
• Proofreading.

How many times have you felt trapped or that you didn’t have a choice?

As an entrepreneur, practicing vulnerability is an important skill as it allows you to build trust and create meaningful connections with your team, clients, and stakeholders, which are all crucial for the success of your business.

In her book "𝘿𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙡𝙮", Brené Brown explores the role of vulnerability in the human experience and argues that daring to be vulnerable is essential for building meaningful connections and living an authentic life

Here are three examples of what 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 can look like for an entrepreneur:

1. Sharing a personal challenge or struggle with the team, such as struggling with work-life balance or dealing with a personal crisis.
   
2. Admitting when you don't have all the answers and asking for help or input from others.
   
3. Being open to feedback and criticism, and being willing to change course or pivot if necessary.
   
In general, the book has been well received. Some critics have argued that the ideas presented in the book are not supported by rigorous scientific research and that the book relies more on anecdotes and personal experiences than on empirical data. 

Others have pointed out that the writing in the book can be repetitive or overly simplistic at times.

Overall, I found the book a great read, and would highly recommend it to those who enjoyed her TED Talk and desire to gain even more insight into the concepts of vulnerability and shame.

If you don’t wholeheartedly believe you can achieve something, it just won’t happen.

For many years, everyone believed it was physically impossible to run a 4-minute mile. They said the human body was incapable and your heart would explode.

In the 1940’s, someone ran it in 4:01, a record that stayed for nine years. 

Then, in May 1954, Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute barrier, running the mile in 3:59.4. This didn’t happen solely by sheer hard work, training, and passion. 

It happened because Roger believed that it was possible. 
He knew he could do it. He trained by 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚.

Less than six weeks later, Australian John Landy ran it in 3:58. 

Once Barrister broke the perception of what people believed was possible, it opened up others’ minds to believe the same thing. 

The same is true for each of us.

As we set personal goals for ourselves, it's important to understand the motivations behind them. 

One effective way to do this is through the "𝟱 𝗪𝗵𝘆" 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱.

It involves asking yourself why you want to achieve a particular goal, and then continuing to ask why for each reason you come up with.

𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧:

1. Why do I want to lose weight?
Because I want to improve my health.

2. Why is improving my health important to me?
Because I want to live a long and active life.

3. Why is living a long and active life important to me?
Because I want to be able to enjoy experiences and activities with my loved ones.

4. Why is being able to enjoy experiences and activities with my loved ones important to me?
Because relationships are important to me and I want to be able to fully participate in them.

5. Why are relationships important to me?
Because they bring meaning and fulfillment to my life.

As you can see, the process of asking "why" can help you uncover the deeper motivations and values that drive your goals. 

By understanding these, you can stay more motivated and committed to achieving your goals.

So next time you set a personal goal for yourself, try asking yourself the 5 Why questions.

Throughout our lives, we are taught who we have to be in order to fit in and be successful. 

But what others need and expect from us isn’t always how we thrive at our best.

Self-reflection and self-awareness are the first steps. 

Identify what your dream life is, not everyone else’s. 
When you know yourself well, you can stand strong in a world full of competing expectations.

Setting boundaries is an essential aspect of managing our time, energy, and personal and professional relationships. It can be a challenging task, but it is crucial for our overall well-being and success.

The impact of poor boundary-setting can cause burnout, stress, and damage personal and professional relationships. It can also hinder productivity and creativity, leading to decreased overall performance.

On the other hand, setting healthy boundaries involves identifying personal and professional limits, communicating those boundaries clearly and assertively, and learning to say "𝙣𝙤" without guilt. 

It is also important to prioritize self-care and self-reflection.

Overcoming common obstacles, such as managing people-pleasing tendencies and handling pushback from colleagues, can be difficult, but learning to balance work and personal life can help.

I remember when I first started practicing mindfulness. I was a skeptic, but I soon discovered that it was a great way to reduce stress and improve my focus. 

I began to notice that I was more aware of my thoughts and feelings, and that I was becoming more resilient in the face of challenges.

To start practicing mindfulness, try taking a few minutes each day to focus on your breath. Pay attention to the sensations in your body and try to stay present in the moment.
