Today marks RARE  DISEASE DAY, a global initiative to raise awareness and foster change for millions facing rare diseases worldwide. 

WHAT IS RARE DISEASE? A rare disease affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people, and if it's less than 1 in 50,000, it's ultra-rare. 7,000 rare diseases impact 300 million people globally. 72% of rare diseases are genetic. 50% affect children, and 30% of children with rare disease do not live past age 5.

ETHAN'S STORY: My son Ethan lives with Nebulin related Nemaline Myopathy (NM), an ultra-rare neuromuscular disorder. NM is debilitating and life-threatening. Ethan is unable to walk, move, swallow, breathe, and eat on his own. He requires constant care, faces frequent emergencies, and relies on machines for basic functions. We have had to call 911 so many times that Ethan’s favourite game is pretending to ride to hospital in an ambulance. After 28 ICU admissions and 3 near-death experiences in his little lifetime, we are lucky that he is still here (many are not so fortunate).

IMPACT AND HOPE:  Witnessing the toll on those with rare diseases is profound and unfortunately Ethan's story is tragically common. BUT for the first time there IS hope. Dr. James Dowling, Canada’s foremost NM expert working out of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto Canada, has recently had an enormous scientific breakthrough in the field. Gene therapy for NM is now closer than ever. And the best part? There is great hope that Dr. Dowling’s discoveries will apply to treatment for countless other rare diseases and more broadly change the gene therapy landscape.
