Documenting the journey of crafting a timeless coffee cup brand | CEO & Founder of Cupsly

Hi, I’m Niall Cleaver, founder of Cupsly, a timeless reusable coffee cup brand launching in 2025.

But my story isn’t about a polished entrepreneur. My journey hasn’t been traditional. I left school without an English qualification, uncertain of what the future held. That failure shaped me, it forced me to think differently, fall into business, and ultimately embrace creativity, resilience, and the belief that change is possible, even when doubted.

Fast forward to today, and I’m the founder of Cupsly. The idea originated from my own frustration in my own life I couldn’t find a reusable coffee cup that matched my style. Everything felt cheap or uninspired, and I hated the idea of carrying something that didn’t reflect me. Cupsly is crafting a reusable coffee cup, elevating it into a symbol of fashion.

Do you know what I love about working for a family business?

The debates.

I know it sounds weird, but when two generations meet, there are always going to be differences. There's always the little comments like this:

- I think you should do it this way.
- I’m not sure that’s right.
- Are you sure?

But if you take a step back… this is healthy.

It’s what every successful business should be striving for. It’s these differences in opinions that keep it interesting, and it makes your business better.

Great businesses aren’t built by avoiding difficult conversations. They’re built by welcoming them, listening to them, and using them to move forward together.

So I guess I’ve got some more debates with the old man to have.

People are getting building in public wrong.

I've seen it happen multiple times...

As someone who has shared a lot of my journey on this platform, and heard everyone telling me to share more and more, but I want to touch on something...

Building in public doesn't mean:

Sharing everything.
Doing it to tick a box.
Doing it because of pressure.

Sharing in public is about strategy.

There's so much pressure for everyone to keep posting and creating content that might not necessarily work for them, but because everyone is telling them to continue to do it.

That's what happened to me, and I fell out of love with it. Losing motivation and jsut doing it out of pure discipline, but I want to go back and create the content I used to love creating, the raw, unfiltered side of my life.

SO WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT

Get other people out of your head and do what's right for you.

A statement I feel I need to make...

I know people who are very successful and have little online presence.

A reminder: you don't have to post relentlessly to make something great...

What started as 'I need to post every day' has now changed. I'm lucky enough to be around some very successful people, and they always told me.

"The real work comes first."

And honestly... I feel 10x more productive and much clearer about what I need to do. I'm thankful I went through this becasue we all need to realise the rights from the wrongs. 

I understand sharing content creates opportunities, but the best content will always come from the work you do. This is what attracts the best talent and opportunities for you.

As I enter this next phase, my ambition is even greater to build a well-known biotech company and share the lessons with you.

This story is wild... Jack Zhang arrived in Melbourne at 15, working at petrol stations and bars to pay for university. While working on his cafe business with his friends, he realised international payments were slow, clunky and expensive.

As someone who’s in business and cares a lot about building something that impacts lives, stories like this motivate and remind me what’s actually possible when you follow your gut, pick a real problem, and keep turning up to solve it.

In my first two years at Thistle Scientific, we made a massive brand mistake.

We were promoting everyone around us, but not ourselves, the big boys we partner, collaborate and manufacture for. On paper, it looked great.

But what we really needed to do was establish a brand that people knew of us in the research space. A brand that was recognised for:

Research & development.
Supporting researchers in 125+ countries.
Global Collaboration: 100,000+ items shipped annually.

We didn't put ourselves first to allow this to happen, and we paid the price for it, but now we are. We're building an incredible brand that supports researchers around the globe.

We're collaborating more than ever with the world's biggest companies. Because they're getting to know us, and this allows us to have an even bigger impact together.

So here's the lesson: Build the brand that gets you known where people want to collaborate with you because that's how you create even bigger opportunities.

Honestly, life’s too short to wait around.

If your gut is trying to tell you something, go and try it.

My life’s been a bit wild recently. A lot’s going on. Some things have paused, and other things are in full swing. But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? That’s life.

If you’ve got a business idea, try it.
If you regret something, go back and do it.
If you’ve got a hobby you want to start, try it.

This is how you build a fulfilled life.

But don't forget there’ll always be parts you don’t enjoy. That’s true for everything. But when you find the thing that feels right, you’ll know it!

I sat on the edge with my family business. Half-in, half-out, overthinking every “what if”, but here's the lesson I gained from it.

You don’t find clarity by watching. You find it by choosing something, backing it properly, and letting life and your gut teach you if it’s right or not.
