Miami startup convention takeaways that surprised me:

We keep arguing Miami vs. SF vs. NY… 

but the most useful conversations were really about how founders build leverage now: capital, talent, distribution, and story.

A few notes I’m still thinking about:

1) “Revenue solves all problems” (but relationships unlock revenue).  

The best founders weren’t chasing every shiny inbound. They were proactively picking 1–2 geographies they want to win over the next 5–10 years and laying foundations early: reference accounts, partners, investor relationships.


2) Financing is not “money.” It’s strategy.  

A useful framing: What am I getting beyond capital?  
Different capital sources shape your company: pace, flexibility, risk tolerance, and even what you’re allowed to do next.


3) The ‘global IPO’ idea is a mindset shift, not a destination.  

Think customers / investors / talent as global from day one, not as a “later” expansion plan. The point wasn’t “go public fast,” it was: build a company that can attract belief globally (and maybe liquidity earlier than the last 20 years of “stay private forever”).


4) What VCs are optimizing for has changed.  

I heard this repeatedly: as software gets cheaper to build, product isn’t the moat.  
Moat is increasingly: distribution, credibility, and speed to market (plus the founder’s ability to sell/recruit/raise).


5) Early-stage evaluation can be reduced to three risks:  
- Demand risk (do people want it?)  
- Delivery risk (can you actually ship/implement at speed?)  
- Economic risk (does the model hold as you scale?)


6) Fundraising mechanics (simple, brutal, useful):  
- Maximize qualified meetings (not random meetings).  
- Increase conversion by showing momentum with consistent updates.  
- Start with angels/operators who feel the problem → they de-risk the story for institutional capital.


7) Immigrant founder edge + the missing piece:  
A theme I loved: immigrants often have a chip-on-shoulder intensity and resilience, but the “American” advantage is storytelling. Big vision first, details second. You often only have 90 seconds to earn the second meeting.
