Why do some clients pay 3K for the thing, and others 30K? 

This was my big head scratch years ago when I started my copywriting business. Was it the client? Was it the copywriter? 

And, then, how do you get into the big leagues? 

Well. 

There are definitely "strata" of clients...

You might not realize it when you're newer in business - there are different strata of clients who value the work you do in different ways. 

Take copywriting for example. There are plenty of clients who might buy something once. Web copy. An email series. 

Then, there are other clients who buy those assets regularly. Copy drives their revenue. 

Both are valid clients, but the ones who buy regularly have a different perception of value. 

They know what kind of ROI they can expect. 

They also *might* know how to hire that work and judge the quality of what's on offer (not all do, and that's OK, too). 

There are different types of clients for different points in your career. And, obviously, someone who buys over and over again is better for your bank account and easier on your marketing. 

And, not to be too cryptic, but I wrote about that in last week's newsletter and I identified it as the difference between being the doctor and the waitstaff. 

I shared some questions to ask prospective clients so you knew which type of client you were talking to. And, some ideas on how to differentiate yourself.

Tell the truth

I had a discussion with someone in The Room (the mastermind I run) recently. They were agonizing over some miscommunication on a client project. We hashed it out and they encouraged me to write about it (which I did in a newsletter a few weeks ago). 

Their take: we don't talk about this enough (if at all). So...here's part of the challenge:

How do you bring up what went wrong? What do you say when you are willing to talk about it. Here's my take on those times when something goes sideways -- especially if it's your fault. And, even when it's their fault (like scope creep, missed deadlines on their end)...

Open the conversation by saying how awkward or uncomfortable it is / you are. 

You know, client, this is tough to bring up, and I feel a bit uncomfortable, but here's the situation. Then explain -- succinctly -- what happened and how it can be fixed. 

Most people, when you admit you're a bit uncomfortable, will lean in. They'll want to help you. They're emotionally wired to help, not to chastise or find fault. 

It can pave the road for an open dialogue and finding a solution without anyone getting defensive. 

I've always believed that making mistakes is just what happens -- to all of us at some point. What's problematic is not addressing the problem. We all screw up. Not everyone owns up. 

Owning up is a super valuable skill, and one people appreciate. 

What's your experience in this (often difficult) department???

Who wins the project? 

A client meets with two different creatives about a pending project. One's wildly talented—but is all over the map during the call. They ping-pong around, talking about formulas, other clients, their wins. They have a lot of personality and clearly a bunch of experience, but the client feels slightly whiplashed after the meeting.

The second person doesn’t have quite as much experience. But. They have a process they can explain clearly and a plan. They exude a sense of calm. They talk about deadlines and explain how they’ll tackle the project and what to expect. They talk about how much reliability matters and how they bring that to the table.

Guess who gets the job? It’s NOT the person with the most experience.

So what’s really going on here?

Clients choose the contractor they feel confident in. Who they think will give them the best shot at getting the project done right, on time, and without the client losing their mind in the process.

Systems matter. Process matters. Being crystal clear and explaining to a potential client not just your ability to create deliverables, but everything you do for them, is how you make clients feel confident in you.

Think of it from your client’s perspective. They have a project. They need results from that project. If they hire you, and they’re not 100% confident it will get done well, and on time? They can’t let go mentally. They pay a price for that. Their business pays a price.

Good clients will hire the person (and often pay premium prices) for the person who makes them feel confident that the thing is well and truly off their plate and on yours.

That’s why…

Winging it comes with too steep a price – for your bank account and your confidence.
