Resist the urge to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Writing at a fifth-grade level ≠ treating your audience like children.

Every writer / content-adjacent / internet-dweller I know IRL feels dumber as a result of using AI. (i'm including myself here). Couple things I'm doing to counter-balance:

1. Reading books - self-explanatory. 

2. Writing with pen and paper - stream of consciousness morning dump-o, no rules. Actually, one rule: you can write or do nothing, but you can't do anything else. h/t Neil Gaiman.

3. Copywork - books and articles, not copywriting (or LinkedIn posts, god forbid, (i don't hate myself)). I wrote Fight Club by hand last year. Now tiptoeing through The Contortionist's Handbook. I tell people this is 'fun for me', people give me funny looks.

4. Thinking - literally sit in a chair and think. In complete sentences. More or less replaced meditation for me. Cal Newport wrote about this somewhere.

5. Walking/lifting - preferably, no headphones, though I'm not always successful here. Side note: it's weird how we're blasted with music everywhere we go: gym, doctor's office, work office, car radio, even the x-ray machine at my dentist has a jingle. "Silence is golden," as Thomas Jefferson said (*)

Biggest behavior change for me over that last year or so is I wake up very early (4-5am, sometimes earlier if Mr. Insomnia pays a visit) and spend 2-3 hours reading, writing, thinking before I look at a screen or start working for the day. 

Trade off: I have to hit the hay pretty early to create space for this morning rigmarole. So early, in fact, I will not even reveal how early. 

This is what works for me today. YMMV.

There's always ice baths and peptides. Or religion.
