On Friday, I walked over 17 miles for men's mental health. The goal was 34,000 steps. One for every man who dies by suicide in the U.S. each year. I did it because right now there's a man walking across the country to bring awareness to this issue. His name is Tim Perreira and today, he's somewhere in Kansas. He issued a challenge to people following his journey: • Walk 34,000 steps • No headphones • By yourself I ended up walking a little over 17 miles and 38,000 steps. I take smaller steps than most people (my family can attest). It took about 5 hours, and was mostly enjoyable. The day was nice. I had lots of trails to follow to stay off the main roads. My mind wandered from thought to thought. Not having AirPods in my ears kept my mind focused on the steps. Towards the end, my legs started hurting. I was happy to get to finish and thought, "I'm not sure I could do another 7 or 8 miles without a lot of pain. But that's what Tim is doing everyday. When I got home, I had my "Keep Going" hat waiting for me in the mail like a small reward for completing the challenge. It was a day well-spent to bring awareness to something we don't like to talk about. If you want to support Tim's mission, there's a couple of ways: 1. Donate to his cause: https://lnkd.in/ej95fKqD 2. Buy a "Keep Going" hat: https://lnkd.in/eDqeXJmK 3. Take the 34k step challenge and share it on LinkedIn.
I've never had suicidal thoughts. But that doesn't mean suicide hasn't affected me. The summer before my son's 8th grade year, One of his friends took his own life. He was 13 years old. I have a friend who struggles with suicidal ideation. Multiple classmates from high school have take their lives. I know it's common. I don't understand why. Just because I don't understand, doesn't mean I can't do something about it. The guy in the picture is Tim Perreira He's walking across the U.S. to raise awareness and money for men's mental health. He just passed the halfway mark. I met Tim in May 2022 in Denver. We were both active on LinkedIn. We decided to have coffee. We talked Linked and Jiu Jitsu His truck was in the shop, So we picked a place close enough to ride his bike. At the time he was starting to coach men who were working on themselves. Since then, I've followed Tim's journey as he's talked about men's mental health, And shared his own mental health struggles along the way. On his walk, he's issued a challenge: Walk 34,000 steps in a day. Each step represents one of the men who take their lives in the U.S. every year. As far as I know, about 15 people have done it. On Friday, I'm joining the list. I'll be walking around 17 miles, with no headphones or any other tech to keep me company. Just me and the thoughts in my head. It's the least I can do.
