I started posting consistently on LinkedIn 9 months ago. Today I hit 3,000 connections. 🥳

Here’s what I’ve learned about the platform, its audience, and myself.

#1 - 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭.

My posts with personal stories tend to get the highest reach, but the posts that have led to conversations -- and ultimately revenue -- are about the work we’re doing.

You need a balance of the two.

#2 - 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐝’𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐤𝐞.

You’re rewarded for being... social.

Not for being smart.

Certainly not for being sales-y. 

Act accordingly.

#3 - 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬:

I tried cracking YouTube last year (and I’m still bullish on the platform long-term), but I love the 2-way nature of LinkedIn.

You get immediate feedback.

You get to see what others are posting and reacting to.

It feels more like a networking event than a stage. And I love that.

#4 - 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 = 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲:

Being consistent is 10x easier if you put systems in place (as simple as they might be).

Find your way to capture ideas, draft them, edit, and schedule content.

Writing is hard enough.

Make it easier on yourself.

#5 - 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬

Many people start posting expecting to get clients tomorrow -- and I can appreciate that.

But the path isn’t always as linear.

I’ve gotten speaking opportunities >> that lead to a partnership >> that lead to a client.

Or a ‘networking’ call >> that lead to a referral >> that lead to a client.

Just be you, be patient, and help others.

You never know what might happen.

Firm owner: "I want to grow as far as I can without hiring more"

I just had a conversation with a small firm owner who admitted to me she wasn't looking to hire more...

Yet she wanted to keep growing her income.

Her strategy?

To raise her prices -- and make her processes more efficient through automation.

Much is talked about prices.

But what's often missed is that both pricing AND efficiency are proportional.

All things being equal, charging twice as much -- or spending half the time -- can lead to 2x the revenue with the same headcount.

Of course, a mix of the two is likely the best strategy.

But never forget both can impact your income equally.

A feature doesn’t exist? Build it.

Automation is like content -- while hiring is like paid ads.

How so? In 3 main ways.

(This is a weird analogy, but hear me out. It'll make sense.)

#1 - Takes longer to pay off, but nets you more

Content takes time. It doesn't pay off as quickly as paid ads.

But over a longer time-horizon, content provides a larger return.

Similarly, building and automating systems takes longer to pay off when compared to hiring another role.

But over the long term, it is the preferred choice because...

#2 - Results keep coming in

With paid ads, no dollars = no impressions.

With content, you can keep reaping the rewards of a piece that's YEARS old.

With people, their time and capacity goes out with them when they leave.

Yet you can keep reaping the rewards of an automated system LONG after putting in the work.

#3 - One makes the other better

If you make good content first, then you get more out of your paid ads.

Because you have a better way to nurture people coming from paid. 

If you build great automated systems first, then you get more out of hiring.

Because you have a better way for people to do their work.

No way that can be automated.

Right?

WRONG.

This has been a problem solved for years.

Many platforms give developers easy, secure access to thousands of banks and financial institutions.

Without the need for client's credentials.

It's the same technology that power fintech apps like Venmo.

So arguably, it's even more secure than a human logging in.

We at Opzer have come across accountants spending countless hours:

⏬ Downloading CSVs from banks
🧪 Reformatting the heck out of it
⏫ To then upload it to their clients' accounting software

If the bank isn't supported directly by the accounting software, chances are a custom bank feed integration can be created.

Don't tell us it's not possible.

I just had a conversation with 🦅 Byron Patrick, CPA.CITP, an industry leader I greatly respect.

Byron has lead tech companies and IT departments of 100+ people.

Who better person to ask how to "get good" at managing change.

Byron's response was unexpected.

He broke it down into 3 areas:

- 10% of managing change is training. Providing the support for others to learn the new processes and systems.

- 15% of it is timely execution of your promises. Proper project management, essentially.

✅

The other 75%?

Communication.

Each stakeholder has a different interest.

We need speak to that.

Even initiatives with massive potential will face massive resistance if you don't get this right.

In essence, the secret to change management is...

Sales (huh?)
Influence.
Ol' boring communication.

Reminder to self:

Your don't need better technical skills.

You need to better articulate how others will benefit from change -- and cast a vision for a better future.

"If you can't beat them, join them." 

Technology can't -- and won't -- be stopped.

If you're working within a team:

Learn to have technology work for you rather than against you.

If you're a leader or owner:

Encourage your team. 

Reward efficiency initiatives.

They likely have more insight than you do on what can be automated.

Most accounting firms are slow to adapt.
What separates the agile ones?

My understanding about this has shifted over time.

It's not really about:
↪️ keeping up with the latest tech
↪️ attending all the conferences
↪️ documenting every process

That's part of it.

But what will REALLY make a difference in the long term is culture.

A culture where:
👉🏽 "That's how we've always done it" is unacceptable. Continuous improvement is expected.
👉🏽 Doing "more with less" is not punished with "more for nothing."
👉🏽 Change is embraced, even suggested, from team members at all levels.

Culture over tools.
Culture over everything.

9 ways you can leverage ChatGPT to grow your firm.

Assume you're advising a 16-year-old who wants to run a technology business eventually.

What would you tell them to study?

Artificial intelligence that can do useful work -- not just talk.

Technically, a custom GPT (connected to the right applications) can be considered an AI agent today.

But it lives on the web and requires you to connect it to certain apps.

Using AI isn't as fast or as easy as people first assume. 

It can 10x your output, unlock new opportunities, and improve quality (if done right), but it takes real work to get there 🎯 

Take writing an article ✏ 

Many writers will toss in a few sentence prompt about the topic and what they are looking for. Maybe go back and forth with it a few times to try and fix issues. 

Then, after 30m, they feel the sunk cost rising as they need to get this article done, so they decide that "AI content isn't good yet," then go back to their usual 2.5h writing process. 

These people expect the wrong thing from AI. 

It takes time to learn how to prompt well, to figure out how to best structure the instructions, provide the right context, and to learn where it best fits into existing processes. 

In this example, the first article may take longer than usual... like 4h. 

But next time you have a template to work from to co-write. 

✅ Or, maybe you decide to just use it to go from 0-1 and write outlines for you to customize and write from. 

✅ Or, maybe you decide it should just play the editor role, providing ways to improve your first draft. 

✅ Or, maybe you decide it should just break your article up into social posts for you to use to promote the article (you hated doing that anyway).

✅ Or, one of a million of the ways it can be incorporated. 

My point is that AI is just a tool. 

An amazing, revolutionary tool. 

But a tool. 

Take the time to learn to use it, and it'll provide an astounding ROI.
