I’m seeing a lot of SaaS startups use AI to “scale” their output and replace factions of their marketing team.

But if your content isn’t:

12 months later, when everyone’s sick of the generated crap in their feed (if they aren't already 🤷‍♀️), don’t wonder why you’re unable to hit your marketing goals.

In 2024, “best practice” content doesn’t cut it anymore. To win, you need an edge—something that’s true to your brand and product.

For me? That’s original research.

That’s why all the content I create comes from hard data unique to the brand and ICP.

✅ Activation

This is where all the data comes together. Using this data, I build a documented strategy that includes the following:

I remember having a conversation with Tommy Walker a year back, and he mentioned that the social currency your content carries matters a lot.

If people feel confident sharing something, you know you’ve created something good.

People often judge you by the content you create, consume, and share. This gives folks insight into how you think, communicate, and potentially even execute your work.

Think about the last time someone shared an excellent piece. I’m sure it changed the way you perceived them. 

I know I’ve perceived someone differently, especially when the content solves my problem right when I’m in the middle of it.

That’s when I changed the way I thought about content.

Sure, traffic and engagement are great. But the other side of the coin (or should I say the dark social side of it?) makes the hustle worth it.

Sometimes, you need someone else to state the obvious. That’s a conversation I still carry with me to date.

So the next time you create something, think about how good it’ll make your readers look in front of their boss and peers. 

That’s a quality benchmark we all need to set for ourselves.

Nailing your B2B SaaS content strategy starts with asking the right questions during client intake.

After working with clients across multiple verticals, I've zeroed in on 3 non-negotiables I need before building a content strategy:

🟪 Customer research

Asking marketing, product, and sales teams to fill out a questionnaire that digs into:
- Who are their buyers, and who makes up the buying committee?
- What does their buyers’ day-to-day look like?
- What pushes them to consider their solution?
- How do they research new software solutions?

🟪 Product research

Asking product and marketing teams to fill out details on:
- Features and benefits of the product
- Typical use cases (and departments)
- Collateral showing the product in action (interactive/video demo)
- Access to the product itself

🟪 Competitor research

Asking product, marketing, and sales team to share details like:
- Top competitors in the market (direct & indirect)
- GTM or positioning documents to understand the market
- Feature comparison list for bottom-of-funnel content
- Competitors that buyers are currently mentioning in sales calls

I also ask them which employees would be a good fit to lean in on as an internal SME and if they have any existing content assets.

This is useful if you’re building a thought leadership program or conducting regular interviews for pieces—which is typically the basis of my process.

Consolidating this information during the intake process prevents constant back-and-forth later on—and helps internal teams access everything in one place.

If you don’t have case studies, publish comparison and alternatives content to get ahead.

🟪 Original perspectives

Lean in on internal and external SMEs to bring personal and authoritative perspectives to your content.

Your writer might not be a subject matter expert, but they should know how to interview and extract top-notch insights.

🟪 Strong distribution systems

You don’t have to be everywhere, but you need to be where your audience is.

Pick 2 or 3 channels, repackage long-form content and distribute it. It helps you get your message out in multiple formats early on.

Missing out on even one of these aspects? You’re going to have a hard time building strong brand recall and converting readers to product users.

P.S. By early-stage, I mean pre-seed, seed, and Series A companies who produce content on an ad-hoc basis.

Content is the #1 growth driver for early-stage B2B SaaS, but only if you invest at the right time.

Most B2B SaaS companies I’ve come across seem to feel a false sense of urgency to hit publish.

Maybe you’re launching a brand-building campaign or getting a jumpstart on SEO. But all it does is keep you running towards a destination that’s never coming.

AI and automation are all the rage right now—and everyone’s racing to automate every part of their workflow.

So much so that folks also want to automate their entire content strategy.

Don’t get me wrong. I do believe that there’s value in automation.

But if you don’t spend time in the inherent messiness of the research process, you’ll end up with a strategy that’s nothing more than a few topics on a sheet—or worse, loosely related keywords.

For example, in 2022, I made a rough cluster map based on Solarwind’s top-of-funnel website content. I was working for a direct competitor of theirs, and we were trying to understand what kind of content Solarwinds was publishing.

If I automated the process, it would look like this:
→ Scrape the titles from the website
→ Use an AI tool to group the topics
→ Categorize the content based on topic frameworks
→ Use that as a base to understand what SW is doing

But I would’ve missed out on critical info like:
→ How they talk about a topic
→ How they talk about the product
→ What types of narratives and visuals they use
→ Whether they feature experts or not
→ What gaps exist in their current strategy
→ How they change the angle based on use case/industry

☝️ All these pointers helped us understand how we could stand out from them. Now imagine re-doing this for 5 to 10 competitors. Can you imagine the depth of insight you'll get?

You can’t do this by simply scraping a few competitor sites and asking GPT to build a table.

Nor can you build this by analyzing 5 content pieces on each site. You’ll have to get into the trenches and do the hard work.

It’s messy af. But if you’re unwilling to do that, there’s no point in doing what you’re doing.

I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about automation, but I think we’re oversimplifying it to a degree that it’s seeping into articles I’ve come across 😅

So consider this your friendly reminder to use automation as a time-saving technique—not to cut corners while doing the work.

If you’re a marketer, I’m sure you’ve come across this question: quality or quantity?

I say high-quality content at smaller volumes first—and then use that to scale your volume.

The key is to start from a place no one else is—original research—and be strategic with the results.

Here’s my 7-step process to create high-quality content at scale:

→ Conduct one SME interview or a 5-question survey on a core topic
→ Pull out key insights from the final asset (transcript or survey results)
→ Use that data to build a content brief for writers (marry it with brand + product data)
→ Get one long-form article from the writer
→ Slice and dice that piece to create multiple short-form pieces
→ Distribute those assets to the right channels
→ Measure performance over time and double down on what works

P.S. You can even conduct one interview or a 10-question survey that results in multiple long-form pieces.

This way, you get 10 to 20 high-value pieces to post on different channels. You’ve gone from cranking out 1 blog post per week with difficulty to publishing multiple assets every week.

As long as you have a tight framework for conducting original research, you’ll keep creating assets your audience wants to consume.
