October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Years ago, after I landed in the hospital and my ex was arrested, my boss gave me ~36 hours to get over it.

I quit and found a new job.

My next manager:

↳ Walked me to my car after late meetings
↳ Never questioned the therapy appointments
↳ Checked on me when I had court dates

Over 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 4 men, will experience DV or stalking. Among transgender and nonbinary people, that number is over 50%. We're in your Zoom calls. We’re sitting next to you in a cubicle. I was in an abusive relationship for years, and no one suspected a thing.

To the managers who show up without judgment, who stay present but don’t pry, it matters more than you’ll ever know. And if you’re a leader wondering if someone on your team needs support, they probably do. 

The question is what kind of boss you'll be.

A CEO ghosted me after the final interview. Two years later, I ran into him at an exec retreat.

I thought I was interviewing for my dream job. 4 rounds. Presentation I spent 6+ hours working on. Then a final interview where he dismissed my ideas, lectured me about my job history, and painted a picture of a pretty toxic work environment. 🫠

When he shook my hand at the retreat, he introduced himself like we'd never met. No recognition, nothing.

I was respectful and cordial. But the whole time I'm thinking, if I'd gotten that job, would Verbatim exist? My book? Would I be standing here as a founder with a team of my own?

We waste so much energy trying to control how people see us. But we can't. What we can control is how we treat people when we have power over their future. Sure, that rejection wounded my confidence and made me second-guess a lot. But I moved on and built the right thing for me.

He didn’t remember making me feel small. I don't remember why I wanted that job so badly.

Sometimes the life you're living is better than the one you thought you wanted.

Early in my career, a recruiter suggested I "tame” my afro before an interview. So I politely withdrew my application.

I spent years mentally calculating which parts of myself were "acceptable" in which rooms. Watching my friends wonder if their tattoos would cost them the promotion. If their accent made them sound "less professional." If their natural hair was too much for the office.

I will say this: If they want you to be different for the meeting, they'll want you to be different forever. If they can't handle you at the interview, they sure as hell can't handle you with ideas, opinions, and a voice at the table.

But also... sometimes you need the paycheck. I run my own company now, so I get to make the rules. But I also remember being 24 trying to make rent and keep my car. 🫠 

Having options is a privilege. Not everyone can turn down a job because they don't like the dress code. And not everyone can quit when their boss makes a microaggressive comment. So if you need the job, take it. Learn everything you can. Save your money. Build your network. And create your exit strategy.

Just don't stay so long that you forget who you were before you started. 🤎

Because one day you'll have options. You'll be in a position to choose. And when that day comes, I hope you choose to build something better than what you left behind.

In my mid-twenties, I woke up on a random Saturday and started crying.

Because for the first time in a long time, all of my bills were paid. I could just relax. All weekend.

Social media has convinced us we need to chase $20k, $30k months to be a "real" entrepreneur. If you're not scaling, you're failing. But sometimes success looks like crying on your couch because you can finally rest. Or taking your kids out without checking your bank balance first. Or having a weekend that's actually yours.

Don't get me wrong — I still celebrate the milestones. The travel, the freedom, building a life I love.

But those wins hit different when they're built on peace, not panic. In a space that's always screaming for more, more, more, maybe contentment is the real flex.

Some people want to build empires. Some people just want to spend more time with loved ones without guilt or worry. Some people want both.

Define success for yourself. Then go build that. 💜

The world feels like a dumpster fire. And taking time to find these headlines each week has become one of my favorite ways to fight the doomscroll and actually see a little bit of good.

I wrote 54,000 words about being unapologetic at work. But I've barely mentioned it on LinkedIn.

I don’t know about you, but self-promotion feels weird when the world is on fire. 🫠

But, as my friend reminded me last week, that's exactly why I wrote the book: this constant guilt about taking up space, deserving success, and whether our work matters when everything feels broken.

So many of us have been trained to make ourselves smaller, to wait for the "right time" to be proud of our work. Not too proud though! And not too loud either! But maybe that's the whole point. Maybe building something meaningful — especially when everything feels chaotic — is how we push back.

I didn't write The Unapologetic Professional to teach people to ignore what's happening. I wrote it because guilt has become our default setting. And because we need to build careers that actually matter to us, even when (especially when) the traditional playbook is falling apart.

Your work matters. Even now. Especially now. 

So if you've been sitting on something you're proud of because “now's not the time,” when will it be? 🫶🏽
