Agency recruiters deserve to get paid for their hard work - which is why I often question the validity of the contingency recruitment model.

After all, if a client isn't willing to bet on me (container, retainer) - then why should I bet on them? (time, tools, experience, relationships etc.)

It depends on your perspective.

Which do you prefer - contingency or container/retainer?

As a recruiter - I've found that the outcome of a search invariably depends upon the depth and quality of the intake call at the beginning of the process.

A job spec is just the tip of the iceberg (and often a red herring) - there is so much more that needs to be accomplished to set both parties up for success, that you could be forgiven for walking away from a Client who is not inclined to submit to your intake process. 

I was reminded of this in my podcast with Kate Brogden, founder of Evolve Partners who seek to establish themselves as "Brand Ambassadors" on every search they undertake. (link below)
