Ladies (and those who care about them), it's time to prioritise our health. 

As a coach, I understand the temptation to avoid health appointments. 

Because we're busy 
Because we have to move another meeting; or 
Because we feel fine at the moment.

But let's face it, we all need to take care of ourselves. 

Last week, I finally went for my mammogram. It wasn't exactly enjoyable, but it was just 7 minutes of discomfort. The NHS had taken the time and limited resources to invite me, so I knew it was important. 

I realised that sometimes, we need to ignore our 'reasons' for avoidance and commit to our well-being. 

After all, a healthy life with our loved ones is worth much more than 7 minutes of discomfort. 

Let's get out in front of procrastination and avoidance by taking action for our health. 

Avoidance can show up in other areas, but start with your health.

Because...you're worth it...

What should I know about getting a mammogram?

How can one overcome procrastination in health matters?

Why is committing to well-being important for overall health?

Do you feel that traditional time management techniques could be better? 

Many of these techniques assume we have complete control over our environment and time, which is rarely the case. 

Deadlines and commitments can quickly spiral out of control, leaving us overwhelmed and stressed, which can negatively affect our communication and engagement with others. 

That's where a new way of calibrating your effectiveness alongside your well-being can help.

By prioritising tasks based on their importance whilst also seeking ways to collaborate and recalibrate with others, we can regain control over our day and over our wellbeing. 

It's not just about deliverables, but connections.

Taking breaks and resetting our mood is just as important as drafting that report. It's a crucial part of our well-being and productivity. 

By taking time to check in with colleagues, stakeholders, or customers at least several times a day, we can refuel and reconnect ourselves to others and get that wider perspective we need. 

What matters in the longer term? 
Will the outcome really give us what we need?

It lowers our emotional temperature, regulates our mood and prevents that overly focused approach that brings myopic thinking.

''A lot of times when you have very short-term goals with a high payoff, nasty things can happen. In particular, a lot of people will take the low road there. They'll become myopic'', says Daniel Pink

So why not give it a try? 

Take a 3 minutes 3 times a day to recalibrate with others and see how it can impact your effectiveness wider perspective and well-being.

The benefits will be:

✅Greater scope for ideas to emerge
✅Lowering of your emotional temperature
✅Enhanced reputation as someone who listens as well as acts.

What's your purpose?

Ok, no meaningful monologues from me today.

This is just a shameless plug for my daughter, whose purpose yesterday was to run the London marathon for the first time for the NSPCC, a great charity.

Much to her surprise, she completed the full 26 miles. 

She was especially boosted on the way by everyone singing 'C'mon Eileen' as she passed the crowds, with her name emblazoned on her t-shirt.

Her name is actually Aileen, but - close enough!!

She is just short on her fundraising target, so any last-minute donations will be ridiculously appreciated.

Breakthrough Strategies to Overcome Anxiety and Depression

Do you sometimes have an emotion that rises up out of nowhere in the middle of the working day that catches you off guard physically as well as emotionally? 

It may even arise from overwhelm.

Someone mentions a memory, or shows vulnerability, and in that short moment, the emotion rushes up to meet you when you have been entirely brain-focused. 

It can be quite a surprise, and we often experience it physically. Our heart rate changes, we stop in our tracks, we experience emotion, and our breathing changes.

Often, we close it down because we are busy or don't want to seem or even present as vulnerable. Still, that moment offers information that is not only important but valuable.

It reminds you of a connection or a value that matters.
It reconnects you with your humanity.
It opens a path to aligning with someone or something.

We operate primarily in our minds when we seek an intellectual answer to deeper questions or wrestle with questions and contradictions. 

To optimise our potential, we can harness our mind, body, and emotions to process our circumstances. 

People who notice what is going on for them physically at a given moment - for instance, shallow breathing, tightness in the chest,  or clenched jaw are using 'somatic learning' - the process of learning from and listening to the information we receive from the interaction of the self with the environment.

It can be helpful to often record these observations and the associated emotions, which I sometimes refer to as 'personal data sets'. 

This experiential knowledge involves senses, perceptions, and mind-body action and reaction. 

So, when moving through the week a few questions that might tap into this self-awareness might be:

▶️Which circumstances create tension or anxiety?
▶️What circumstances left you feeling tense rather than collaborative?
▶️When are you able to offer the best version of yourself?
▶️Why is one professional relationship so difficult when others are not?
 
This process of self-observation can, in turn, yield new insights that may help us understand the reason for the stress and make a decision to address it.

Because we're all human - right? 

In the words of Thomas Hanna, a philosophy professor and movement theorist who coined the term 'somatics.' 

 “The human body is not an instrument to be used, but a realm of one's being to be experienced, explored, enriched and, thereby, educated.”

The Office of National Statistics has today published a bulletin entitled 'Measuring Progress: Well-being and Beyond GDP in the UK'.

It notes that:

🔹Average ratings of personal well-being in the UK have declined across all measures in the year ending  March 2023.

🔹The percentage of people reporting low satisfaction with their lives in the UK has increased to 5.8% in the five years to Dec 2023

🔹Adults with “very bad” self-rated health reported the highest proportion of poor well-being across all measures.

🔹23.4% reported high levels of anxiety, a light rise on the previous year with a greater proportion of women reported high levels of anxiety than men...?

This tells us what many people would instinctively see for themselves: that the post-COVID world is proving difficult to navigate. The cost of living is rising, and the pace and pressure of life and work are straining relationships and well-being.

✅  Notably, health status and marital status had the largest contribution to life satisfaction, with self-reported health status having a large contribution on average ratings of all personal well-being measures.

So, we can't put off looking after ourselves or building positive relationships while simultaneously advancing our careers or planning our futures. Well-being and connectivity are all part of the package that gets us through life and work.

Increasingly, employers are developing effective wellbeing strategies.

As CIPD state in their 2023 Survey entitled 'Health and wellbeing at work'

'Senior leaders have the influence to transform the wellbeing culture as well as good practice in organisations. Their active support for any programme is critical as they are in a position to integrate health and wellbeing priorities into an organisation’s operations.'
