7 Bad Habits I Quit to Grow My SEO Business (And You Should Too!)

You've seen the experts on social media.

But here's the thing about SEO advice:

Not everything is true.

Many tips are misleading. 

A waste of time. 

And money.

I’ve been in the SEO & content marketing game for 16+ years now.

Started in 2008 and had some successes and many failures.

😰 A half dozen bulk-AI content sites that cost me time and energy but had zero results, for example.

😰 Or optimizing every single image on a site with 1k+ pages with near zero revenue increase.

So, based on 16+ years in SEO & content marketing, I share 7 things I DON’T do anymore.

Because they don't have a big impact on revenue.

❌ I don’t buy links
❌ I don’t ignore sales teams
❌ I don’t implement changes myself
❌ I don’t produce BOFU content only
❌ I don’t write articles based on just a keyword
❌ I don’t fix every technical error ahrefs tells me
❌ I don’t run a technical audit for every customer. 

Sometimes it's not about what you DO.

But what you DON'T.

And that can make all the difference.

Now, does this mean I never run a tech audit, optimize images and never implement changes myself? 

Of course not. 

But most of the time, these things are a waste of time.

Before you slide that ring across the table, you better know the ring size, favorite color, and pizza topping preference of your beloved. It’s the same in sales. Know your client's business like the back of your hand—or the inside of a jewelry box. Are they more diamond solitaire or quirky vintage? Crack their code! 🔓💡

Step 2: Star-Crossed Timing ⏳✨
I chose a moonlit beach because, why not be extra? In the high-stakes world of B2B sales, timing your pitch can feel like trying to schedule a SpaceX launch. Too early and you’re a forgotten email; too late and you’re spam. Time your pitch so it lands like that perfect sunset kiss. 💏🌅

Here‘s 3 things you & I SHOULD learn from this.

FIRST → Only because everyone is doing „it“ doesn’t make it white hat

SECOND → Never experiment with your main domain or risk deindexation

THIRD → Spamming doesn’t get you reliable revenue. (My book does, link in profile)



Remember there is a better way:

1. Talk to sales teams
2. Extract customer insights (read my 📕?)
3. Show them paradise 
4. Take them there

Talk about their FEARS vs your FEATURES.

Why?

Fears are roadblocks they actually care about.

And WANT to get rid of.

❌ "We offer advanced call tracking software."
✅ "Wasting money on ads that don't work is a nightmare."
→ Directly states the fear.

❌ "Seamless integration with your existing CRM."
✅ "While you're missing out on high-value leads, your competitors are snatching them up."
→ Fear of falling behind the competition.

❌ "Robust reporting and analytics dashboards."
✅ "Blindly making marketing decisions will cripple your results."
→ Strong imagery + fear of poor choices.

So remember:
Features are all about YOU.
Fears are all about THEM.

Care about THEM.

And you'll make a bunch of money.

On becoming a better dad

Topic 1️⃣: What makes a good dad
I am interested in becoming the BEST dad I can be.

Because, well, I got a daughter now.

And my hope is that over the next 2 years

as I continue to learn and improve

I'll be able to become the best dad in HER eyes.

I have since bought the book Daily Dad by Ryan Holiday.

Topic 2️⃣: Email marketing
I first got interested in email a few years ago.

Sean Anthony reintroduced me to it recently

and since then

I have learned a lot about the importance of:
→ content repurposing
→ systems, and 
→ having a plan. 

That last one? I am still working on executing tbh. Hard to balance that with Topic 1 at times. But here I am writing to you! Yeay!

Topic 3️⃣: Ad funnels
I also have an interest in learning more about ad funnels.

It's one of those fun rabbit holes I find myself exploring simply because I enjoy it. 

The burning of cash, not so much. To be frank.

But then my recent book "Content Cash Machine" is exactly about that. 

How to stop burning cash on ads. 

Funny enough: 

now I understand B2B tech brands even better

because that's exactly what I am struggling right now. 

Ads are hard man. Meta Advantage ads are so bad right now. 

They just eat your budget. $50 CPM anyone? Insane...

And before you start complaining that am the SEO guy 

and should just write about SEO and content...

Well, it goes hand in hand, my friend. 

Once B2B brands have a good foundation in content

why not leverage different distribution channels?

Increases the ROI of that one piece of content tenfold!



And if I manage both topics 2 and 3, 

then maybe they contribute to me becoming a better dad.

Because I have more time for the little one.
​
While I work on my terrace at 11:30 PM 

so I can spend time with her during the day. 

And not be stuck in an office job with a 2h commute.
