Stop letting them gatekeep your LinkedIn Ads results.
Do this instead (it takes 5 minutes):

1. Export the SQLs from your CRM from a reasonable timeframe (enough for some data) 
2. Find your top 3-5 job titles (combined should make up >50% of SQLs)
3. Go to your LinkedIn Ads account.
4. Select all the campaigns in the last 180 days.
5. Click "Professional Demographics"
6. How much of your top job titles show up here? 
7. Combine them. What's the %? 

Now repeat this for company size and industry. 

The gaps might explain at least some of the reasons why your LinkedIn Ads aren't working.

If you think you can just drift casually into 2026 with the same stuff you were doing in 2024 - think again. 

Unfortunately, things are going to get a lot tougher. 

Fortunately for you, someone talked me into sharing some of my hard-won insights on LinkedIn Ads (in general, and ABM in particular) as part of the LinkedIn ABM Bootcamp 2026 for ZenABM.

I never ever go into Facebook unless I absolutely must, usually for work.
But when I do, I get to be reminded that I used to be kind of a fun guy.

If you stopped doing everything today, what would be left? 
That's the brand.

If you stopped all your ads, stopped posting on social, stopped going to events, stopped all outbound, email marketing, everything.

How many hand raisers would you get every month after a quarter? 
After six months? 
After a year? 

That's the brand you built over time. 

As time goes by, that brand will fade into obscurity - but what it is after a few months of doing nothing, that's what you've built.

If the real and true answer isn't much, you haven't really built a brand. 
You might have built an outbound engine, and ads that drive leads and (if you're doing it right) you get pipeline from those leads. 

But if you turned it all off tomorrow and people didn't continue to knock on your door for months or even years later - you didn't really build a brand. 

I believe that I built a brand with Remotion: LinkedIn Ads Agency, which is not easy to do in the services industry. I did it with a modest budget, and entirely on my own, post by post, yellow ad by yellow ad, month over month for the last 10 years.

I'm proud of what I've built, and if you've ever really built a brand, you'll known what I mean.

Let's cut the BS.
We've been sold on a lie. 

Well, several lies really.
The first big one was that we could accurately attribute everything.

As if we could be able to give a perfect account of every dollar spent, and report on which ones were wasted and which ones delivered ROI.

We were fooled there for awhile, especially when the web was young.
We were pretty young too back then. Naive even.

But things got more complicated, and it became harder and harder to hide the truth. That "touch attribution" (first, last, multi, et al), even when somewhat accurate, could only paint a limited picture of your efforts. 

The longer I do this, and the more we focus on real marketing - not just button pushing - the less that "old school" attribution story is of any use to me. 

Here's what I'm doing instead: 
1. Asking "how did you hear about us". 
2. Using CAPI for ad optimization (apples to apples) 
3. Incremental measurement

And yeah, we still look at the UTMs too - but none of us believe it to be a single source of truth anymore.

So, let's cut the BS. 
It's not 2016 anymore buddy. 

Let's focus on doing great marketing.
So great that the results are impossible to miss - without attribution.

LinkedIn Ads for B2B SaaS

"What's your budget?" I ask. 
"Unlimited, if you deliver results." They answer.

"That's great, but if we start tomorrow, I need to set a budget." I say.

"We're comfortable spending $3K a month until we see results." They say. "Our CEO is crazy like that. He doesn't want to spend on things until it's proven that they work, but once we see they work he'll spend as much as possible".

"So what kind of results do you need us to deliver?"

"Well, we really need to see pipeline." 

"Who are we targeting?" I ask.

"You know, mostly CIOs, VPs and Directors of IT I guess too" They answer.

"What size companies?"
"Enterprise. 10K+ headcount." 

"How much does your software cost?" I ask.

They grin. "Oh, it's a lot. Our deals are easily in the 6 figures range." 

I pause. 
I ask myself if I should be brutally honest here, or just politely tell them we aren't a good fit.

"I'm going to honest." I say. "We're probably not a good fit right now, just based on your budget. I'm happy to send over some freelancers that ought to be able to help you at that budget." 

"Sure! Thanks." 

"But before that. In want to share my thoughts, if you don't mind.

You're targeting CISOs, Directors and VPs of IT, at US and European Enterprises. You're early stage - so you still haven't really validated your messaging, your positioning, your offer. You don't really have something that works just yet. 

Your CEO, bless his heart, doesn't want to spend more than $3K on ads until it's proven that it works. But what he's betting on here is kind of a fantasy. With an audience like yours, an ACV like yours, and at the stage you are at - the chances that this will work - even if we do everything pitch perfect - are slim to none. 

They argued a bit. They said they have a new Gartner report they just paid for, that they saw their competitors were running something similar and were sure it could bring leads. 

I say: "You can get some gated content leads. Sure. And they will be relatively expensive, because you're going after an expensive audience, with pretty generic content Conversion rates to meetings will be low or non-existant You don't yet have the infrastructure to make that playbook work for you."

I say: 
"If it was my money, I'd either wait until you could afford to spend more, or spend the money, but forget about the results for now.

Just focus on getting the message out there. 
Forget about "leadgen" and Gartner reports.
Forget about ROAS.
Get very good at telling your story and hyperfocus on that and only that."

I hope they listen to me, but they probably won't.

Everybody's plan is just a theory until you start spending money.

I’ve spent over $75 million dollars of other peoples’ money on LinkedIn Ads so far this decade. 

Here are a few practical things I learned:

• Know how your ICP is targeted. 
Get very good at understanding the various ways to target them. 
This goes beyond job titles and industries. 
Iykyk.

• Most ads suck. 
They are either too vague, or too complicated, or trying too hard to be clever. 
Stand out. 
Keep it clear. 
Keep it simple. 
Really, spend some time in your feed intentionally noticing the ads. 
Do you notice how many are easy to ignore.
Don’t do that.

• Don’t overcomplicate things. 
You probably don’t need to be running as many things as you’re running. Better to do less, but better.

• Say what you do. 
If I can’t figure out what it is you do by looking at your ads, your ads won’t do jack shit. You might get some MQLs, maybe some meetings - but you won’t drive pipeline. 
Say what you do. Say it clearly. Say it often. 

• Seek out validation beyond attribution. 
Yes, attribution is flawed - but you will need to prove something is working. There are other ways to validate this beyond utms. 
Seek those out.

• Very few marketers understand the fundamentals of brand building. 
Building a brand = creating a memory people can access when they need you. It’s worth learning this.

• Until you’ve validated you are driving pipeline, you should be careful about assuming your ads are effective. 
I’ve audited so many accounts - most marketers over-estimate the effectiveness of their own marketing - to their detriment. Don’t do that. 

I’ve spent the last 20 years in marketing, 14 in B2B, 
and last 10 running a LinkedIn Ads agency. 

Every lesson here was taught to me by reality.

It's 2026. It's time to cut the BS.
This isn't what real marketing looks like and you know it.

The webinars, the whitepapers, the MQL generation for the sake of a number on a dashboard. For what? 

The creative that isn't creative. The copy that is AI-generated. 
The thought leadership that isn't neither thought nor leadership.
For what?

So everyone can congratulate themselves on another successful quarter? - (when really everyone knows that you're nowhere closer to generating real business outcomes from your efforts).

And your ads. 
Can I be honest? 
You won't be offended? 
Your ads are bad. 

Actually no, it's worse than that. 

Your ads are nothing. 
They are insignificant. 
Your audience scrolls past them without even noticing them. 

It's 2026. Can we cut out the BS marketing? 
There are better things to do.
And we're doing them.

Can we cut the BS? 
This is not what real marketing looks like.

The stock images. The AI slop. The corporate jargon. 
You know it. Your boss knows it. Heck, your customers know it. 

So, what should you do instead? 

Tell the story. 
Not the watered down version of your story that took 6 rounds of feedback and revisions to get approved to post. 

The real story behind the triumphs and agonies that your customers go through, and that your company goes through to solve their problems.

There's real drama there. 
Actual, human drama that people care about it. 
The story lives in there.

So come on already. 
It's 2026. Cut the BS.
Let's do real marketing again.
