💔 The hardest day of my career wasn’t about failure. It was about money.

I was told to lay off dozens of people.

Not because they weren’t talented.
Not because they weren’t delivering.
But because the company needed to “trim costs” for the quarter.

I’ll never forget sitting across from brilliant leaders and innovators who had given their all... and having to say the words: “Your job is gone.”

I thought I understood gratitude. 

Then came day 2 of our Kenya awareness trip, and everything flipped upside down. 

We spent the day at a giraffe center with the friends and families we sponsor through Unbound.org.  
It was our final day together, and leaving them felt like ripping a bandage off.  

We saw a glimpse of their real lives... lives where running water is a luxury, phones are rare, and education depends on the kindness of others.  
It floored me.  

And yet everyone we met was so joyful and happy to meet us.

How do you carry so much joy when you have so little?  
The answer?  
Gratitude and faith that runs deeper than anything I’ve ever felt.  

One sister of our sponsored friend told us how she and her siblings have fought to keep moving forward since losing their mom.  
Their big dream is to build a house on a tiny piece of land their mom bought before she passed, but at $30,000, it doesn't seem possible.  
Still, they talk about it with hope, not bitterness.

What gets me is how our $40 a month, which barely covers a dinner out here, pays for a child’s tuition in Kenya.  
Public schools are not free in Kenya, and without Unbound, our friends simply wouldn’t get to go.  
Education is the ticket out of poverty, and that is Unbound's mission, but only if someone’s willing to give. 

Currently there are 11,000 Unbound sponsored children and elders in Kenya, and about 2,000 waiting.  Think about that staggering number. 

Tony, one of the boys we've sponsored for the past 12 years, is about to graduate high school.  
Next stop?  
University.  
He wants to be a lawyer.  
He wants to visit America.  
After meeting him, I have no doubt he can do it, and our sponsorship made it possible for him to get to this point, and will help him continue on his journey.  Now, that is a great feeling!

I walked away from that day realizing my problems are small and my reasons for gratitude are endless.  
We talk about “making a difference” a lot.  
I think, sometimes, the people we try to help end up changing us way more than we ever change them.

My recent trip to Kenya was eye-opening in ways you can't imagine.

Poverty like I've never seen.  People without water who live in tin-walled shacks with dirt floors. 

And somehow they survive, and over time, they can overcome their challenges.  They graduate secondary school and attend university, so they can have a better job and elevate their family from their situation.  

How is this possible?

Through Unbound (unbound.org), a world-wide charity committed to ending poverty. 

In Kenya alone, Unbound has 11,000 sponsors who support children and elderly for a mere $40/month.  

Many more are still waiting for help.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to share the details of my Unbound Awareness Trip to shed some light on this experience, and maybe even encourage you to become a sponsor yourself!

Day 1 we were greeted by the local mother's group, the backbone of the program in each community.  The mother's groups support the sponsored families, hold each other accountable, and often identify projects to improve the community which are funded through Unbound's Agents of Change program.  

It was such a wonderful welcome, and we felt genuine kindness and joy with each dance step!

💡 Burnout isn’t just exhaustion. It’s a signal the system is broken.

Burnout doesn’t always look like falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like:
📅 back-to-back meetings that never end
🚫 hitting a ceiling, no matter how hard you work
💔 being undervalued even when you’re overdelivering

That was me.

And here’s the surprising thing I learned:
Burnout wasn’t a me problem.
It was a system problem.

Corporate cultures that prioritize profits over people will always burn out the very leaders and innovators they rely on.

That realization was painful.

But it also gave me clarity: if I ever built my own company, it would be different.

At 𝗠𝗰𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, we design work so our team actually looks forward to Mondays. (Yes, that’s possible!)

We chase 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀, not outputs.

And we protect people’s energy as much as we protect their time.

This one contract clause cost us hundreds of hours of free labor for a client.

Buried in the contract was a “do not exceed” clause added at the last minute.

We missed it in the rush.
And when scope shifted, we were stuck doing massive amounts of work without pay.

That mistake hurt.

It also taught me this: contracts aren’t filler. They’re the foundation of your project.

Now, I always ask three questions before signing:
1️⃣ Is the scope crystal clear?
2️⃣ Is there a process for change requests?
3️⃣ Does the payment model protect both sides?

Because wishful thinking on paper always turns into pain in practice.

Lesson learned the hard way: never underestimate the fine print.

A toxic client almost ruined a project worth millions.

I thought I was being clear until I realized my clients had no idea what I was talking about.

Every week, I’d send beautifully detailed status reports full of technical jargon. My team thought they were crystal clear. But when I asked a client to explain back what they understood... it didn’t match reality at all.

They were frustrated.

👉 When we hosted a scoping workshop, we obsessed over the details—where people sat, how the agenda flowed, even the pastries on the table—because the right environment creates the right outcomes.

👉 When the market got rough, we didn’t cut people loose. Because people aren’t line items, they’re the heart of what we do.

It’s not always easy. It’s not always profitable in the short term.
But in the long game? It’s everything.
