Who grew up thinking "I'm going to be the best at ________." 



I remember as a kid I wanted to be the best football player. Later I wanted to be the best illustrator. Then the best at SEO. 

Even recently, in 2019, I wanted to be the best at LinkedIn. Of all the things I wanted to be the best at, that on is the most ridiculous. 

Now I do podcasting and I want to be the best podcaster. 

It's not and ego/pride issue. It's, a whatever I do, I want to give it all I have issue. 

Being the best to me now, is being the best version of myself I can be. Podcasting is unique in that it's like a mirror. You get to watch yourself in action. Which also means you get to improve every time you produce a show. 

What are you trying to be the best at? 

Are you becoming the best you? 

Or still competing to be the best, period?

In 30 seconds I found out why I have been unemployable for 30 years. 



I've never resonated with an explanation more than what Jordan Peterson explains in this video. Not only does it make perfect sense but I have seen it played out in my life. 

I've been told flat out that I'm not a fit because I'm too entrepreneurial and creative thinking for a position.

The question I have for the business leaders is why is this true? Why is creativity not encouraged, affirmed, and rewarded? 

Why is it viewed the way Jordan explains? What are we afraid of?

Are you open to finding them?



This little man went completely against what he was "supposed" to do and took a risk that very few would. His reward? Glory!

I wonder how many reading this right now are lined up on the sideline knowing there is a shot they can take but won't? 

What fears are holding you back? 

• economy? 
• paycheck?
• bills?
• "common sense?"

You realize there will always be more reason not to do something than there is to do something. 

Instead of looking at the reasons not to do it, focus your energy on the possibility of your goal. 

What if. 

Just maybe. 

You took the shot. 

I can tell one thing, no matter how it turns out, if you don't take the shot, you'll one day regret it.

If this is how you feel right now, it might be time for a change. 

I hear a lot of people talk about security when they talk about their jobs. They can't stand what they do or who they are doing it for, but it's a steady paycheck.

This year, I turned 51. I can count the number of years I had a "steady" paycheck on two hands. 

There have also been plenty of days when I was the raccoon. 

However, what has defined my career is not money but that I love what I do. 

If you're the raccoon today, my advice is to deny that feeling of security and take the jump. Life is too short to be stuck in something you dread for a paycheck.

The world needs more genius.

Steve Jobs was probably the greatest marketer this world has ever seen and what he's known for is creating a tech company. 

Maybe you don't need features, benefits, differentiators, and solutions. 

Maybe what you need is something crazy... Imagination. 

When failure is not an option...

Dare to risk. 

Dare to dream. 

Dare to think different.

I've held this video for two years, waiting for the perfect business analogy to unleash it to you all. I have yet to find one. Just enjoy the genius…

As a business owner, your content needs to accomplish three things:


1. Personalize (put a face to) your brand

2. Build community 

3. Provoke action

If you don't, it's an exercise in futility, and you'll feel like Jerry. 

Nobody wants impersonal, cookie cutter, who cares website content posts. 

Nobody. 

Now, look at your companies content. Has anyone cared? 

How will you change it?

Remember, it can always be worse. You are still blessed.


I have to admit, I used to think that mindset was just smoke and mirrors. Something people say to convince themselves of something they don't really believe. 

A few weeks ago after I threw a little pity party for myself my wife had to remind me how I've been blessed over my life. 

It hit me at that time how easy it is to complain. 

I also reminded myself that if it's easy to complain, it should be just as easy to bless. 

Mindset is a deliberate choice to focus our minds on what blesses, etifies, and encourages. 

Outside influence make those decisions more difficult but I do believe the more we practice positive thinking the easier it is when faced with negative circumstances. 

What techniques or tips do you use to keep your mind positive when circumstances are not favorable?

In 2020 we were all excited to chat in the DM box. 

Those days are over. 

Now, cold email has a better chance of response than the DM. 

These days you have to work harder. You have to show that you want the relationship by engaging content. And, it has to be more than once. 

If the person has no content or activity then it's likely you'll never hear from them in the DM. 

In my mind, [in] has always been a networking platform. It used to be you could connect, have a nice DM conversation, and if nothing else you have a new contact that may benefit you in the future. 

Not so much today. 

I'm curious to hear your theory as to why this is the case. 

Has spam and fake accounts turned you off?

The connect and pitch made you leery of responding? 

Or, do you still love the DM and think I'm crazy?

What is your strategy for gaining followers?

Before you say it doesn't matter, think again. Followers matter.

You need great content focused on thought leadership in your space to grow your brand. That's easy to say, but it's a completely different story to implement. 

Building a brand takes time and patience, and above all, you need to do what Gordon did: watch where the seeds are growing and fertilize the heck out of those seeds.

Who can relate? 


There was a time in my career when my emotions teetered upon every sales conversation I had. If someone was positive, I felt good about myself and the job I had done, even if I hadn't closed a deal. 

If someone was negative, I would wear that like a scuba suit.

Most of us avoid conflict and don't appreciate it when people view us in a way that makes us feel bad. 

At one point, I had to make a decision and be honest about myself. Do I like who I am regardless of what someone says or thinks about me? 

If the answer is yes, then you don't have to bury your feelings or drown them in alcohol. If the answer is no, that needs to be fixed before you ever take a job in sales.

Sales is not an easy job, and if you don't have your own personal baggage figured out, it's going to make it nearly impossible for you to find success.

Today, I understand that a person's response has far less to do with me or my offer and far more about the person and/or the situation they find themselves.
