When I was at KPMG, I reserved mornings for reviewing my teams' work. This was my most important work.

Focusing on your most important work is the easiest way to be happier and more fulfilled at work.

But we often fit it in randomly between meetings, emails, messages, calls, etc.

Scheduling time in your calendar for your most important work, and treating it as your highest priority meeting is a simple and 'highly effective' (see what I did there? 🤣) way to:

 – get it done
 – do it better

How to work so you can be happier and more fulfilled in your 30s:

(Things that helped me, or maybe that I wish I knew back then for me...!)

✅ Figure out what you’re brilliant at, and double down on that.

✅ Start saying “No” a lot more – because you’re now more aware of what your priorities are.

✅ Identify who is likely to support your career progression and ask them to do so.

✅ You’ll most likely already have one or more mentors. If you don’t, find one.

✅ But remember, it’s not all about you. Support those more junior than you in their careers. 

✅ Don’t rush everywhere because you’re “really important”.

✅ Understand that EQ becomes more important than IQ as your get more senior.

✅ Use your seniority to be more courageous – don’t hold back your ideas.

✅ Build your personal brand – at a minimum where you work, but ideally externally too.

✅ If you’re the only person talking in a meeting, you shouldn’t have the meeting. Email your updates instead.

✅ Build your tribe. But remember to have an open door.

✅ Try commuting a long distance to the office many times before you commit to that house.

✅ Fix the problem quickly when you screw up.

✅ Remember that it is still ok to ask for help.

✅ And… be just a little kinder than is necessary.

I keep comparing myself to others...

Some say not to do that. But I find it quite motivating.

I've seen a few articles the last couple of days about how Mark Zuckerberg came up with the Facebook 'poke' feature when he was drunk.

(It's in the news as Facebook has recently brought the feature back.)

Coming up with creative ideas after a few drinks probably shouldn't be a surprise, however.

As Steven Kotler notes in The Art of Impossible: (paraphrased)

🍻 Alcohol helps us with creativity because our brain is a pattern recognition system. And our brain seeks patterns in familiar areas when we're sober.

🍷 When we drink, our focus loosens, allowing the brain to rummage around in its dusty corners, backrooms, and forgotten closets.

🍸 This works in a similar way to seeing big views in nature. It tells the brain to look farther afield for ideas, expanding the database it searches for patterns.

So, to increase our creativity, maybe it's time to bring back the three-martini lunch...?
