Foster Coulson doesn’t do interviews, yet he’s built multiple 9-figure companies without ever raising a dollar of outside capital, while paying himself just $1 a year to run them.

The media calls him a conspiracy theorist. The government’s tried to shut him down. But Foster says he’s building companies that put patients before profits, and he’s not afraid to take the punches that come with it.

So we flew out to Vancouver to sit across from him for one of the most unfiltered conversations we’ve ever had ✈️

Last week the Chew On This team partnered up with Brandon Blum to do something very special. We brought together 40 e-commerce founders and executives for dinner at none other than Sake No Hana in NYC, including Shan Liu, Sr. Manager at TORY BURCH and Isaac Jun Wei Chan, CX Manager at Vita Coco.
 
The energy was incredible. So incredible that we closed down the restaurant—people just didn’t want to leave.

We had billion-dollar brands sitting next to founders who literally started their company three days ago and are chasing their first $1,000 in sales.

That mix created something I've never seen at an industry event.

The conversations were real. Founders helping founders. No pitches. No agendas.

Just authentic conversations about what it's actually like to build something.

When someone who's done nine figures can share a table with someone grinding for their first sale, and both walk away with value? That's when you know you've built something special.

That's the energy we're bringing to everything we do moving forward. Real connections. Real conversations. Real community.

Most entrepreneurs chase money first. 💸 They want the fast cars, the flashy lifestyle, and the validation that comes with it. But those are usually the ones who burn out the quickest.

Foster Coulson told me that once you have enough, the real question becomes what kind of difference you are going to make in the world.   That mindset is what separates impact entrepreneurs from the ones who only play for appearances.

In our conversation, Foster opened up about why purpose beats profit every time, and why the entrepreneurs who get it wrong are destined to fail.

2023 nearly killed Obvi. 

CPMs spiked everywhere. Supply chain fell apart. Everyone's credit lines were drying up because we were low on cash balance.

We had three months or less of inventory sitting in warehouses that we couldn't move fast enough.

It felt like building a rocket then suddenly running out of fuel mid-air. We were rushing to fix the engine while trying to float.

We had to rebuild everything.

We became more efficient with our team and consolidated roles, moved from spreadsheets to Luminous for better forecasting, and shifted our media strategy to focus on first-order profitability instead of just chasing revenue.

Tighter cash flow, leaner ops, more profitable SKUs, and fewer distractions.

It forced us to grow up and taught us the difference between being a brand and being a business.

A brand can get people to love you. But love doesn't pay bills when CAC spikes and cash flow dries up. 

The customers who bought from us regularly still wanted our products, but we couldn't afford to reach new customers at the prices platforms were charging.

A business has to survive when things get really hard and ugly like it did for us.

Now we're stronger because we learned the hard way: customer love is amazing, but operational discipline is what keeps you alive.
