But behind that success is 3 years of seriously hard work.

They joined trumpet when we only had a handful of customers.

Leaving recognised logos to join a 12 person pre-seed startup.

At first, they were closing £2k deals with a very chunky target.

There were times were they looked at us as if we were insane.

Most reps would have jumped ship.

At trumpet alone, I've reviewed thousands of CVs and interviewed 450+ sellers. The pattern is clear.

Most candidates say they are different.

Almost none show it.

If you want to stand out when you're applying for a new role, I'd recommend the following: 

• Get referred, not just reviewed
Ask a previous manager to message the hiring manager with a short note on you. One warm referral beats twenty cold applications.

• Send a short video
Record a 60 second Loom on why you're a fit and what you've learned about the company. Less than 5 percent of applicants do this so it's an instant pattern break.

• Run the interview like a deal
Treat the hiring manager like a buyer.
Confirm next steps, summarise calls and send follow ups.
You're not telling them you are structured. You're proving it.

• Research them like a top account
Go deep on the product, team, customers and competitors.
Listen to the podcast, read the case studies, try the product.
Show up with specific questions and reference your research. 

• Tie yourself to the job spec and the news
In your CV and interview, literally mirror that language back with proof.
If they just raised, launched or hired, reference it and explain how your experience fits the next chapter.

• One page CV, easy to skim
Your CV gets scanned for about eight seconds.
Keep it to one page.
Clear sections. Big numbers. No tiny fonts.

• Know your numbers
Quota. Attainment. Average deal size. Sales cycle. Win rate.
Be ready to walk through one deal end to end with specifics.

• Multithread the process
As you progress, connect with future peers, RevOps, marketing and leadership.
Ask smart questions about how they sell and what great looks like there.
This shows you can multithread and that you're genuinely invested, not just spraying applications.

• Create a deal doc 
One page, five deals.
For each deal
 - context
 - your role
-  obstacle
 - what you did
 - result with numbers
Hand it over in the interview or attach it with your CV. 
It's your personal case study pack.


Do all of this and you are no longer another CV in the pile.

You don’t realise how much this stuff compounds until you’re a few years in and think “Why didn’t I start this earlier?” so here are the 10 habits I wish I’d built from day one working in sales: 

1) Keep a Closed-Won list in Sales Nav
A simple list of every customer I’ve ever closed.
Re-engaging warm relationships shouldn’t rely on memory.

2) Track every champion I’ve ever worked with
Champions move companies.
A clean Sales Nav list would’ve saved me a lot of “Hey, long time” detective work.

3) Build my own performance tracker
Activity, velocity, pipeline coverage, conversion, attainment.
Don’t let your manager or RevOps be the first to spot the red flags.

4) Study two elite calls every week
Borrow the intros. Borrow the objection handling. Borrow the flow.
Most of sales is pattern recognition.

5) Make friends with RevOps early
They see the real story behind the numbers.
A quiet chat with RevOps can save you a quarter.

6) Keep a dead deals folder
Ghosted, stalled, lost.
Reviewing them weekly reveals uncomfortable but important patterns.

7) Build a small network of sellers outside my company 
Different playbooks. Different tools. Different truths.
It speeds up your learning more than any internal training.

8) Run my own QBR every quarter
What I won, what I botched, what I’m upgrading.
Treat yourself like a business unit, not an employee.

9) Maintain a moving list of champions and customers
Not just for the next quarter, but for the next decade of your career.

10) Focus on being the easiest rep to buy from
Clear next steps, tidy comms, simple decisions.
Buyers remember the reps who make their lives quieter.

None of these are complicated.

All of them compound.

And I wish I’d taken them seriously much earlier.
