July was another quiet month in the truckload markets.


- Spot and contract rates across van, reefer, and flatbed barely moved.
 
- Intermodal was the exception, with rates climbing on the back of record imports.

- July imports hit an all-time high, up 17.5% YoY. But this was more about shippers pulling freight forward ahead of tariff changes, not a demand surge.

- The economy showed mixed signals: CPI +2.7%, unemployment up to 4.2%, PMI dropped below 50. Fuel prices stayed flat.

What this means for shippers..

- Contract rates will climb slowly over the next 12 months.

- Spot will rise too, but won’t pass the contract market this year.

- Carrier survivability is a genuine concern. Protect capacity on core lanes, and use dynamic rates on low-volume lanes to capture savings.
