Extensive Tornado damage over the weekend at a Dollar Tree warehouse. 

Prayers out to everyone impacted by the Tornados over the weekend. 

The Dry Van and Temp-Control markets have been inverted for two years now.

This means that spot rates are lower than contract rates on average.  

This is the most extended and most inverted period we have experienced
over the last 12 years.

Spot rates end April as forecasted - flat to down slightly. 

Produce season kicks off in CA with higher y/y volumes. 

ATA Contract Tonnage index hit 13th month of y/y declines - down 1% y/y.

Spot rates continue to drift sideways to down slightly. 

Active contract rates in routing guides were mostly flat while replacement rates remained negative but are flattening.

Housing starts down in March. 

New trailer orders are down 19% y/y and 33% m/m.

Spot rates on the rise as EOM volume created higher demand. 

Dry van active contract rates are flat, and replacement rates are 2% lower. 

No interest rate cuts or increases. 

Class 8 truck orders down 10% m/m.

When I was 18, My new college coach gave me unforgettable advice.



My Mom had just dropped me off at college a month early, and I was worried because my eligibility with the NCAA was still pending. 

I was worried because I was right on the cusp of being eligible to receive my scholarship.

But, like most folks I was worried about what was out of my hands. 

I made up for poor grades in night school, took SAT prep classes, retook the SAT, and got a 4.0 my senior year. I had done all the right things to mitigate my poor scholastic performance from my earlier years.

I was still worried. 

Until one day, my head football coach said to me:

"There is no use worrying about things you can't control."

That day, my outlook changed.

Because I was ultimately declared eligible by the NCAA to receive my scholarship. 

I had spent a month worrying about a decision beyond my control.

Worry about what you can control and forget the rest.

I work with many large shippers who initially have this one fear:



They only want to be compared to other shippers, specifically in their industry.

Now, this is faulty thinking for 3 reasons:

• Your rates are RARELY related to your industry
• Origin/destination and characteristics make a rate
• All industries make up the whole market, not one

Even after I explain this, some people come back to me and say:

"We are unique because we only work with assets only and often require a team"

We help with this by using a modeled benchmark for shipment characteristics like asset-based relationships and team service.

Four reasons to continue mini-bids during a loose market: 



- You may be over-market or unsustainably under-market on specific lanes.

- Adapt quickly to a changing market (rates going up or down).

- Find new capacity with new carriers/brokers (evaluate bad performers).

- Evaluate contracts for shorter terms that allow all parties to be competitive based on produce or peak seasons.

Break up your network-wide bids into strategic mini-bids. 
It could save you time and money and reduce your risks.

Why proper benchmarking is crucial in logistics...



A common misstep I've noticed among shippers is their reliance on national averages for benchmarking logistics costs. 

Imagine if real estate agents used national home price averages to negotiate deals on local properties. Sounds ineffective, right?

Consider this:
- The median single-family home price in the US is $350,000 (Zillow).
- In San Francisco, that figure skyrockets to $1,290,000 (Zillow).
- A property in South Indiana might be $200K on average.  

Just as real estate prices vary dramatically from one market to another, factors in logistics like origin, destination, equipment type, and shipment characteristics do, too.

For effective benchmarking, it's essential to analyze costs based on specific market conditions and unique shipment details. 

This approach ensures that your benchmarks are accurate and actionable.
