Have you just arrived in the UAE?
Or have you been living here for several years already?

Here are 2 essential legal reflexes every expatriate family should adopt.

🔹 1. Understand your matrimonial status 

How are assets divided between husband and wife?
Many think they know the answer — but it’s rarely that simple.

What the law can take into account:
 📍 Nationality
 📍Place of marriage
 📍Countries of residence after marriage
 📍Religion of the spouses

Why this matters:
 → Who owns assets purchased in the UAE or abroad?
 → What are the rights over individual and joint bank accounts?
 → What happens in the event of separation or death?

Understanding your matrimonial regime allows you to make informed decisions:
 real estate investments, opening bank accounts, setting up a company, etc.

🔹 2. Plan ahead for inheritance

The distribution of assets depends on several factors:
 📍 Residence
 📍 Nationality
 📍 Religion

By default, local law applies:
 → For Muslims: distribution under Sharia law
 → For non-Muslims: civil status, unless opting for a foreign law (under complex and costly conditions)

A local will allows you to:
 ✅ Freely decide how assets will be distributed
 ✅ Appoint a legal guardian for minor children
 ✅ Avoid uncertainty for your loved ones

🔎 My advice: ask yourself the right questions. And plan ahead.
