A lot of people selling you business growth are liars.

Here are 3 common lies they tell:

(And how to deal with them!)

1) "Bigger is better"

Some marketers believe that the more resources they have, the better their efforts will be.

Secret ==> A big budget cannot save a shiitty product/service.

(But it can fill the pockets of the marketer!)

For the right product/service, even a small budget can be used effectively with the right strategies and targeting.

2) "This strategy guarantees results"

A strategy can be effective.

But to guarantee specific results?

Impossible.

Why?

It depends on many factors like:

• The target audience
• Competition
• The offer
• The timing
• The person/company behind the offer
• And a shitload of market conditions

A marketer offering you guaranteed results?

Get on a SpaceX rocket and leave the planet ASAP.

3) "It is all about getting sales"

It is not only about selling a product or service.

It is also about:

+ Creating a relationship with the customer
+ Building brand loyalty and trust

So you don’t actually have to sell.

Shift your focus.

And be careful about what you hear out there.

Or you can do more harm to your business than good.

I'm sure you don't want that.

Most business owners are tacticians. Not strategists.

They're reactive.

They only focus on dealing with immediate problems and challenges. 

They jump from one crisis to the next.
Putting out fires left and right.

Strategists, on the other hand, play a completely different game.

But being only tactical is why most business owners suffer with their email marketing.

Templates from every guru.
Ridiculous email designs.
Crappy lead magnets.

3) You don’t post enough selfies online

4) You haven’t commented “growth” on a certain LinkedIn post to get that free guide, which was easily worth $269 but the poster was feeling generous to give it away for free

5) You were not born into the Kardashian-Jenner family

6) You don’t wake up at 4:69 AM

7) You don’t leave 6969 comments a day

Too bad a lot of us do it the hard way.

Stop obsessing over launching new offers. 

Instead:

• Nurture relationships with past customers
• Offer upgrades, or alumni offers
• Make it easy to repeat purchase
• Ask for reviews, testimonials, and referrals

The top online business owners I know are doing these things regularly.

They don’t launch new offers every few weeks.

They maximise lifetime value.

+ Creating continuity offers
+ Building communities for customers
+ Getting clarity on ideal next purchases

Meaning?

You need to focus less on the new shiny thing.

Instead, double down on:

– Gathering data
– Monetizing the customers you already have

You’ll see significant growth.

It takes a lot of hard work to make something look easy.

For the normal eye, it's just an email or automation.

"Oh, it must be so easy!"

It's easy because you can’t see the work that goes behind the scenes.

(At least for the ones who put in that work!)

Here are 3 things we do that make email marketing look easy:

1) Research

Bad marketers guess.

Smart marketers conduct research.

And research is often boring, time-consuming, and tedious.

Every great marketing effort that looks easy to you is often the outcome of a lot of research.

The research I conduct for clients to tap into their target customers’ minds is ridiculously deep.

• Hanging out in forums or online groups
• Review mining + Content mining
• Competitor research
• Surveys (in the business and outside the business)
• Customer interviews (if possible)
• Using AI to complement the research

This is the stuff that allows us to get the results that we get.

2) Creative + quantitative work

Most people just assume that marketing is merely creative work.

Partially.

It's just as much quantitative work as well.

Especially when it comes to optimisation.

As Rahulates said...

"Growing the numbers requires knowing the numbers."

Plus, it's very hard to find a marketer who's both creative and analytical.

Creative people are often not so good with numbers and vice versa.

3) Understanding human psychology

This is probably the most important one.

All the research and numbers mean nothing if you can't properly interpret them.

And then combine the information gained with human psychology to craft something that can make people tick or act.

That is the real power—the real work.

And that, my friend, isn't easy.

Or is it?

You should never shoot an arrow in the dark.

Not clear about your target.
No clear aim.

You may even need to protect your own dum-dums.

The same is true for your email marketing.

No strategy or tactic can help you.
Not unless you know your "why" behind it.

Having a purpose for your email marketing allows you to:

• Attract the right people
• Humanise your efforts
• Collect the right data
• Optimise accordingly

The result?

Short-term → Better leads and more sales

Long-term → More brand equity and retained customers

Having that purpose and knowing the why helps us give a clear direction to a client’s email marketing strategy and get the results that we get.

So the next time you start or do anything with your email marketing, ask yourself this...

WHY?

Tired of chasing ghosts? Sick of seeing your email list numbers barely budge?

I know.

Building a list of people who actually care about what you have to say is tough. Most "gurus" will tell you some generic garbage about useless lead magnets and fancy opt-in forms.

We're going to skip past all that.

Here's some facts:

→ You need to find your audience BEFORE you create anything

→ You can't only just blast out requests to "join my newsletter!"

→ Real growth comes from being strategic and playing the long game

Take this client I’m working with currently.

Recently I was working on their subscriber growth plan.

They are in the expat niche, which is big on communities.

Then there’s a dear friend who’s starting a newsletter in the health & wellness space.

Now what works for the client or the friend may not work for others. Because it’s not a one-size-fits-all case.

But there’s one thing common in every situation: 

Reaching the target audience where they hang out online.

For the expat niche, it’s primarily communities and online groups.

For health & wellness, it’s primarily search as well as influencers, coaches, etc.

But for you, it could be something else.

The key is to utilise that space to your advantage. To go where your people are, not where you're told to go.

Last week, the universe played a hand on me.

(Warning: this post can get philosophical)

As it turned out… It was:

1) My birthday
2) My parents’ anniversary
3) My grandfather’s death anniversary

All within a span of 3 days.

(This doesn’t happen every year because we follow a different calendar system for certain events)

Basically, a funny way of being reminded of the 3 most important phases of a human life.

The birth. The union. The death.

As someone who contemplates about life a lot, it gave me a lot to think about.

Things like:

→ How the vision I had for the world and myself when I was 16 is different from the present reality

→ How humans look for escape plans and distractions to run away from the realities of life

→ How we all fall for the definitions of pleasure, fun and success created by others

→ How most people do things to prove a point to others, or get attention (especially online)

→ How group thinking is dominating our society over individualism

→ How the internet (and social media) is ruining the current (and future) generation

This is something that I consider a bane as well as a boon for me.

I like being able to think about things.
I don’t like the extent of those thoughts.

And, so, things get somewhat hard in the topmost floor of this human body sometimes.

But if that’s how it is, that’s how it is.

What’s something about you that you consider a bane as well as a boon?

P.S. Because of the above events, I couldn’t write a newsletter for today… and I didn’t wanna send a half-hearted piece. I’ll see you in the next one with some immense value!

Q4 has been a wild ride.

For my business as well as client results.

1) Took more awesome clients in Q4 as compared to Q1-Q3 combined

2) Clients including an influencer, best-selling author, and top coach + consultant in their area

3) Worked on projects that I never initially planned to take

4) Started taking 1:1 coaching clients and have 2 more in the pipeline

5) ~ 30% better conversions and a direct impact of ~ $240K for clients (with some results still pending)

Now, this quarter will be slow because of summers & holidays.

But I bet this year overall is going to be wilder.

So I’ll be taking the weekend to create specific plans for this year.

In 5+ years, I have never set any goals in terms of revenue or business growth.

We’re changing it now.

But tell me… How do you set goals for your business?

P.S. No, I haven’t lost my mind. 🤣 Yes, it was Q4 in my country because our financial year ends in March.

Say you make $100K every few months or so.

Now, I know what you’re thinking...

Isn’t a huge email list important for that?
Don't I need lots of subscribers?

Here's the hard truth: 

List size is one of the most misleading email metrics out there. 

Sure, it feels good to see those big subscriber numbers rise each month. 

But if half your list is inactive or unengaged, what’s the point?

Those inflated lists full of cold or irrelevant subscribers won't make you a dime.

I have seen people with over 50,000 subscribers who couldn't even hit $5k per month in sales!

See,

More is not always better. A huge pool of mildly interested people won't buy much from you.

But a small tribe of raving fans who love what you sell? Ka-ching!

Imagine 1,000 subscribers who open and click on every email. They know you and trust you. And they buy your $100 offer every few months or so.

Now, that’s $100k in sales! Not bad, right?

Imagine 100,000 people who barely glance at your emails before deleting them. Good luck getting them to spend a buck with you.

Which list would you rather have?

Don't let big numbers that appear impressive but don't actually make you money divert your attention.

Start evaluating your list based on engagement and lifetime value instead.

Focus on conversion, not growth.

Free t-shirts at a concert... yay or nay?

Yes, it might get you excited. 

But they're not exactly building long-term fans, right?

Most freebies or lead magnets are even worse.
They get a bad rep. And for a good reason.

Most of them are spammy, useless, and a waste of time.

(At least, a free t-shirt can be useful)

But here's the thing: they're only bad when they're done wrong.

Lead magnets aren't the problem - bad lead magnets are.

When done right, they're an incredibly powerful tool for attracting quality subscribers who are truly interested in what you have to offer.

(There’s a reason why we have been able to drive 100K+ quality subscribers with lead magnets)

A good lead magnet isn't some random freebie, it's a strategic tool.

How do you turn it into a strategic tool?

1) It's not about WHAT you give. It's about WHEN you give it. Right timing means everything.

2) It's about understanding what's stuck in your customer's head. Figure that out, and your lead magnet becomes the answer they've been searching for.

The strategy that focuses on people will always beat the one that focuses on tools/tactics.

Learn more about human psychology than tools/tactics.

2) Keeping up with the Kardashians

By Kardashians, I mean technology.

Even though the principles remain the same...

... Their application varies depending on technological advancements.

Take AI, for example.

You can either accept it or run from it, but it's not going anywhere.

So, learn to adapt to the changes.
(Or end up with the dinosaurs!)

3) Patience

The best folks out there know three things:

• You don't create and forget
• It doesn't happen overnight
• It doesn't happen if you keep switching things

So mastering patience is a must.

Yes, it may not be easy.

But the struggles make it fun.

Do you think it's fun for you?

If not, are you sure you're even doing the right thing?

This would sound ridiculous to most people.

But I am coaching a competitor with my ways.

On Monday, I had a call with him.
Yesterday, I signed him.
Later today, we have our first coaching call.

He’s a copywriter who wants to move towards offering end-to-end email marketing to clients.

(Just like yours truly here)

So, I’m helping him with:

• All the systems & processes
• Client acquisition, closing & onboarding
• Everything I do for my clients

Why did he decide to learn from me?

Here’s what he said (from the call transcript):

“People market themselves like I'll get you to $5,000, but they don't actually tell you how or what that is”

“But after looking at your website, speaking with you, you know what you’re talking about”

“Also it's like I'm building an email thing and I want to learn from someone who's already done that thing right”

And do you know what’s funny?

I’ve NEVER talked about: 

1) How much money I make
2) How much money you’ll make working with me

(These two things give me an ick)

Yet, people trust me with their business.

How?

I just share what I know & learn, what my clients achieve, and I’m good at conversion.

I don’t need to boast about some made-up numbers.

If you focus on the right things, neither would you!

P.S. Also, this is the first client I got through X (formerly known as, well, you know). So maybe there’s a potential there too?

I have written 100s of story emails for clients.

Most of the time, they have one concern.

Who is going to be the hero of the story?

Here’s how I do it (and you can too):

I use a flawed hero that readers love.

An underdog dealing with a major problem related to an assumption currently holding your readers back.

This hero should be relatable and likeable despite their flaws.

Someone who feels familiar from lived experience.

Maybe they grapple with self-doubt, money issues, or health challenges.

The point is to make readers think, “Hey, they seem like me...” and root passionately for the hero’s success.

There are three ways you can do this:

1) Make yourself the hero
2) Make a past customer a hero
3) Make a fictional hero like your target customer

The first method can work really well if you’re selling your own experiences or learnings.

Some of your favourite top creators use it.

I prefer to use the other two because they work in 100% of the cases.

It’s up to you which one you use.

But always remember…

No story is complete without a hero. (Especially if you plan to sell something)

Contrary to popular opinion, adding friction to your sign-up forms can help you in the long run.

Just add an extra question to your sign-up form with options.

Something like…

“What stage of alpha-beta-gamma are you in?”

Something that helps you categorise your subscribers into different groups.

This is my favourite (easy) way to segment your list, and it does two things:

1) Tells you WHO is joining your list so you can create emails, and offers specifically for them

2) Creates friction for people who you don’t want on your list

For example, if the options show ABC and XYZ, but someone is LMN, they’d think, “Oh, maybe this isn’t for me”.

So, this also brings exactly the people YOU WANT on your list.

You can ask anything you want here which gives you more information about your target customers and helps you segment your list.

Just keep one thing in mind.

Don’t ask more than 2 questions.

One is the email, and the other is the question. 

3 at max, if you also want to ask for the first name.

We do it for all our clients as well as my own list.
