Friday Food for Thought 💭 Before You Apply, Know the Terms

With the job market still competitive and roles coming in all shapes and sizes, it’s more important than ever to understand what you’re applying for especially when it comes to contract types and work eligibility.

Here’s a quick guide I wish more people had in their back pocket

Inside IR35 vs Outside IR35

Inside IR35 = You’re taxed like a PAYE employee. You don’t get the tax efficiencies of using a limited company.
Outside IR35 = You’re considered self-employed, so you have more flexibility but you’re also responsible for your own taxes, insurances, and compliance. If you contract through a limited company, this matters a lot.

Fixed Term Contracts (FTC)

These are essentially permanent roles but with a set end date (e.g. 3, 6, or 12 weeks or months).
You’re on payroll, receive holiday pay, sick pay, and other employee benefits.
It's not freelance, and not day - rate.

Why UK-only or US-only really means UK- or US-only

It’s not just a line on the job ad here’s why location matters
Some clients can’t legally engage workers outside certain countries due to tax and employment laws.

Time zones & collaboration If a team is fully UK-based, a 7-hour time difference isn’t ideal for stand-ups, deadlines, or real-time decisions.

Security & data regulations Especially in financial services, healthcare, and government work.
So even if you're just a short flight away it’s rarely negotiable.

Why clients can’t just flip FTCs into contracts

Changing from an FTC to a day-rate contract affects internal budgets, hiring approvals, legal contracts, and even how the wider team is structured.
It’s not a quick swap it’s a fundamental change to how the role is set up.

If you’re applying for roles, understanding these terms helps you make better decisions and ensures you’re not wasting your time on something that won’t align in the long run.
