I've spent 15 years working my way up to VP/Head of an Enterprise Software Team.  Pride myself on a deep understanding of RevOps, Marketing, Sales combined and ultimately a Revenue Architect.

Today, I'm most focused on Outbound Strategy, which is where most people seem to struggle.  Became a world expert on the topic of B2B Sales Email Delivery and have been presented on many podcasts to talk about this topic.

Here's some advice for SaaS Sales Professionals...

Many will tell you to do more "Revenue Generating Activities"..

I will not.

My way is the opposite.

It's to build your own franchise.

It doesn't have to be in your current company.

I'm talking about building a your own MVP SaaS Product.

Boilerplates, ChatGPT, and Nocode have made it 10x Easier.

There are some Sales People who probably shouldn't do this.

It could take them away from their focus, but there are some that should today.

Get closer to the Engineering and Product team to see if you could build your own company some day.

There will be a lot of Engineers at your company who would partner with you or you could learn yourself.

Here's an example of it working out:

Take a look at 🧟‍♂️ Max Mitcham 🧟‍♂️...

When I met him he was the VP of Sales at a SaaS Company called Selligence.

He wanted to work with us to drive emails to the inbox using triggers.

We helped him get back to the primary inbox.

However, as soon as this happen his company had read a few too many blogs on PLG and how "Investors" love the decreased cost of sales.

He knew exactly what they needed to do to fix the problems there.

Except, they wouldn't listen to him.

The eventually let him go in a Company RIF.

Then he became obsessed with building.

He learned how to setup APIs in Airtable and Postman.

He learned how to build No Code Applications which used n8n and ChatGPT.

He learned how to build a product and has now successfully raised money.

Fast Forward to Selligence's story.

You'll notice Selligence's website doesn't work anymore.

They're no longer in business.

Switching to PLG was not a successful run for them.

And if they had listened to Max, they could be in a completely different business model.

🧟‍♂️ Max Mitcham 🧟‍♂️ has some big announcements soon, but his path is much brighter than that.

So the next time you hear

"they're just in sales."

"they're not technical."

"they need their SE for everything."

You can be technology focused and be good at sales.

In fact, it’s in higher demand than any other job in the world.

Ignore it and learn the technology better than anyone in your company.

Drive yourself to the success you want.

We're going to see a lot more of it.

SaaS Credit Based Pricing Models

The big topic is Rollover.


What are you comfortable with?

Founders can make more cash and prizes if they roll your credits over to the next month.

However, the right thing to do is often let subscribers roll over unused SaaS credits.

The example:

You spend $99 to get 10,000 found emails.

If you don’t use them all, the immediately turn to zero.

What’s your deal?  Do you care?

Recently, I've managed to upset Accountants and SaaS Founders.

Accounting and SaaS Gurus won't like this one bit.

But I decided to do it anyway.

There is so much wrong with this model but I'm going to attempt to explain it.

𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬: You buy credits at the price, more cost = more credits.

𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬: You use the tokens or credits on a result.  The result is tied to the market perception and difficulty of the task.

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤: The SaaS Vendor tracks this for you in an Arcade Style Tokens machine.

𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞: You buy more with Top-up or Auto-Top-up

Now the fun part.

The "Rollover" aspect of the credits.

This is where there is a ton of theft going on from many SaaS Vendors.

Most SaaS Vendors are doing a "SaaS Rollover Sweep" which means they take YOUR credits that you bought and roll them into your bank account.

Benefits to the SaaS Company:

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲: Companies get better predictability and their accounts absolutely love them.  Especially if they're not good at Sales, they can easily predict the future.

𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Users are FORCED into the purchase and the revenue recognition becomes a huge issue.  Our accountants love forced consumption.  They say this is the fundamental part of a SaaS Business Model.

But here's the worst part, they give you a SaaS Sweep if you don't use them.  The credits are expired monthly and you lose it all.

They essentially should keep them as long as they stay a part of your service.

We may change as we grow, but since everyone is generally using all the credits or renewing we're comfortable with our model to help our users.  It's often you can't predict what you will end up using.

The people finding this success aren't necessarily more technical or software engineers either.

They're just comfortable with more failure and developing skills around this topic.

People who can apply Memory, Knowledge, and Tools with specialized knowledge can advance much faster than those who can't.

For Sales Professionals it might be knowing which sources of data have the best Headcount Information.

For Revenue Operations it might be knowing how to use the Code Interperter to clean CSVs.

For Marketing Professionals it might be knowing how to build their entire Content Plan or Schema through the Figma & Plugins.

If your only lens is trading prompts on ChatGPT, you're really missing out.

This is where the opportunity is for everyone who is exploring AI for their current role.

Best place to start?

Start with the Assistant or the GPT Builder.
