Let's face it y'all - not every boss is a dream come true.  
 
Sic semper tyrannis.  
 
A warlord in a sci-fi novel I've been enjoying immensely quoted it and explained the meaning to their squadron before battle. 
 
It means "tyrannical leaders will inevitably be overthrown."  
 
While it isn't always true in business, there's always hope. 
 
There are always things YOU can control. 
 
And I've seen far too many managers lose sight of that spark. 
 
Focusing on those things you can control are what will carry you through the challenges. 
 
Maintaining control doesn't mean dictating the situation.  
 
It's about taking ownership of your actions and responses, empowering yourself to navigate challenges while keeping your long-term career goals in mind.

The full solar eclipse today was a blast, and I couldn't help that thinking about it became a powerful leadership metaphor. 
 
During a total eclipse, the moon perfectly aligns with the sun and the earth, casting a complete shadow.  
 
I wasn't ready for it to so quickly get colder, and quieter. 
 
Everyone in our neighborhood was outside with their glasses, looking skyward. 
 
Our dog started crying, which had my wife and I amused. 
 
Everything and everyone was paying attention to this change. 
 
It also reminded me that even the brightest light in our universe can be obscured. 
 
As leaders, it's easy to fall into the trap of being the the central source of direction and power.  
 
And oh boy there will always be eclipses in life. 
 
When communication breaks down, resources are limited, or skills aren't aligned - our light dims. 
 
The key takeaway for me? 
 
Your role as an empowered manager is to create an environment where your teams are the ones that shine. 
 
If you're going through a dark moment, remember that - it's just a brief moment in time.  
 
It too will pass. 
 
When you focus on lifting others up, you'll find yourselves up there with them.

The most important thing you can be doing in your life is making mistakes. 
 
The second most important thing you can be doing is sharing them. 
 
Fear gives bad advice. 
 
As a manager one of the easiest and smartest things you can do is teach your team to get good at utilizing fear. 
 
Fear is a just signal. 
 
That what is at stake is important to you. 
 
Beautiful environment for growth, wouldn't you say? 
 
Challenges are just opportunities to learn. 
 
Use fear as an indicator to ask yourself "What can I learn from this?" 
 
Don't strive for perfection. 
 
Strive for mastery instead. 
 
Take calculated risks that enable mistakes to be valuable lessons. 
 
And don't forget to celebrate progress along the way. 
 
Do you have a mistake that in retrospect you're glad you made?

One misstep is all it takes to ruin a team. 
 
Here's why, and how you can avoid it. 
 
You know how large bodies of water have drastically different temperatures based on depth?  
 
It mirrors the fact that often there are large shelves of land that suddenly...drop. 
 
Not only is this sudden drop incredibly terrifying - it's COLD.  
 
The word sudden there is critical, both for science and for our application. 
 
You have someone's trust, and then you don't.  
 
You trust someone, then you don't. 
 
People won't abandon you when, as a manager, you don't have their back once.  
 
Or twice. 
 
Or maybe even three times. 
 
But there's a moment where they will abandon you. 
 
And you can't just get trust back. 
 
The climb in reverse is just as steep. 
 
Trust is a finite asset. 
 
The problem is that since it's not as easy as a number in a bank account, it's rarely measured. 
 
Empowered managers track their feedback. 
 
They record and measure the data they do get. 
 
They listen when people trust them with their experiences, and reflect on them. 
 
You need to have a team that will give each other hard feedback, and they will only do that with trust. 
 
Teach everyone to receive that feedback with grace and thank them for what it truly is - a gift.

Here’s a real example that has been a common trend among the answers. 

“Being a new manager, I would like to learn mindsets about leading people from people with much more experience. 

Specifically on how to utilize peoples strengths to get what I need from them. I want to know how to empower them to want to do the right thing becuase they WANT to, not only because theyre scared of being fired.”

Here’s part of what I sent back. What would you add or change?

I shared that one key understanding that experienced managers have: there is no way to motivate your team.

You can only inspire them. Motivation has to come from within. So how do we unlock it?

First, your team needs to know you’ve got their back no matter what. Your function will be severely hampered without that trust.

Show you’re open to feedback and change, and most importantly get a firm grasp on the strengths of each teammate and delegate tasks or projects that suit their skill set because autonomy is a great way to empower your team.

Once you know what each person wants to achieve with their lives and THEN their careers, show them how to best align those personal and productive goals with your organization.

You need to always communicate the vision.

As humans we need to know their why and the why of the work ahead.

And the most important ingredient is reward. It can take many shapes and forms, but intermittent rewards are a critical brain function many managers never learn to respect.

It doesn’t have to be money, it can be praise or recognition, opportunities for different work or their own personal development.

It takes work to be an empowered manager but anyone can do it.
