Increase cold email open rates by 60% with uncertainty.

This works great for B2B SaaS outbound.


In sales, the prospect is usually in one of 2 states.

1. Uncertainty about what you are.

2. Certainty that you are a sales person.


That's about it.


They're going to reach 2 eventually - and that's fine. In fact it's a good thing.

But if they reach 2 BEFORE you've had a chance to resonate with them - either through the pain or offer you have.


You're immediately on the back foot.

Which we all know is a very smelly place to be.


So, if you want to increase open rates, and the chance the prospect reads through your email.


Keep them in a state of uncertainty.


This means - the subject line should be super simple and maybe even a little vague.

Bad subject line:

'How to increase closed/won rates'

Good subject line:

'closed/won issue'


It's not about being deceptive, its about keeping the prospect curious and unsure.

Then, we create certainty in our terms - which hopefully is on a great offer that you have ready for them in that message.


This has always been our MO for subject lines generally and works well.

Irrelevant personalization works.

There's a few nonsense points on LinkedIn about personalization.


You've probably seen a lot of 'relevance' is what matters.

But this space moves quickly.

Relevance is actually tablestakes at this point.


The fact your personalization is relevant does not make it interesting.

yer dull m8.

This is why people who say 'irrelevant personalization' is bad actually don't understand what's happening.


Sales is about psychology.

The reason why irrelevant personalization is 'bad' is because of the way its been traditionally used.


Which is as a disguised opener to reveal a pitch.

It's inherently deceptive.


I can use a door to let someone in or shut someone out.

The door isn't the problem.


But irrelevant personalization, such as some cool things in their location, where they went to school, or maybe something from a photo on their socials...

Can actually be how you build repour where everyone else fails.

You just have to do it correctly, which means 2 things:


1. Structure - don't use it as a way to open a gate to a business offer. That's deceptive.

It should a BY THE WAY.


2. You need to get good at using tools like Clay and prompt engineering to make how you frame those statements genuinely authentic.


'Saw you went to Plymouth University that's so impressive!'

Wtf.

But, saying:

'Omg, I was at Plymouth uni in 2009, did you ever go to Portland's Pizzeria?? I was there every thursday lol'


Irrelevant personalization is HIGHLY effective, if you understand what it is, why it matters, and how to deploy it.


Don't believe all the structural guru stuff on LinkedIn.

Actually some of its good, but a lot of it is dated.
