Do not use your primary domain inbox/es.

Why?

Cold emailing domains are subject to blacklists and getting burned. 

It happens, its part of the game.

And you don't want your primary domain which is for your website and internal comms to have its rep affected as a result.

Do this instead.

1. Get new domains that are similar from a domain provider like GoDaddy.

E.g. 'salesforce(dot)com' - Primary domain
     
Get 'salesforcego(dot)com' - Secondary domain

Setup infrastructure on Microsoft admin.

Connect to your execution tool of choice (we go for Smartlead).

And then do the other 482 things right as well.

Apollo.io - the go-to gangster with restrictions nobody asked for

Ocean.io - the AI lookalike God, perfect if you've got a solid grip on your ICP

Sales Navigator - lol but yes but also lol



Turn raw data into a beautiful structured sales strategy

Clay - obvi.

Persana AI - everyone knows I'm a Clay guy, but this is a democracy. Looks like a promising competitor, but haven't tested it myself properly.



Find emails

Apollo.io - the big boys are back. Yep many of the emails I get from leads in Apollo are actually right on the money. Which they take lovingly from my bank. 

Prospeo - one of the best by far. I always know I'm going to get tons of emails found where others failed, and I can keep it within Clay.



Verify emails

NeverBounce by ZoomInfo (btw the 'by Zoominfo' is lame guys), but yes its a reliable af.


Campaign Execution

Mailchimp - LOL only kidding what do you think I am.

Smartlead - don't think anything compares when it comes to honing the specialty and nuances of cold email.



In game sustenance:

Deliveroo - reliable, I know it's gonna be a good night.

Ubereats - only if they've nabbed some fancy kebab house that's barely visible on the map, but don't be surprised if its 50 minutes late and they switched out your chocolate slice for a pot of berries



BTW - Does anyone remember a million years ago when Dominos did apple cookies?

I still think about those cookies.

Worry about being salesy.


This is a note about following up with potential clients.

You've got to follow up in a way that's new and refreshes the conversation.

Don't be desperate or pushy - that's 'salesy'.

Here's what NOT to do:

- "Are you sure you're not interested?"

- "Can we just get on a call for 15 mins?"

- "Just checking if you want this?"


Here's what's better:

- Humour:

"My last message sucked didn't it?"

- New relevant angle

"Just had a thought - would a prototype to show your clients this week be a better way to start?"

- New social proof

"BTW, we did this for Terry's Truckers and got them $4k in 3 weeks. Would you like to see if we can do that for you?"

- Bump

"Thoughts?"

Yes that's right - the bump is still okay imo - but use it sparingly. (It's not pushy or desperate, which is why it's not quite the same as the NOT-to-dos)

You don't get enough replies from prospects.

Then write the copy.

You're not going to build a steady stream of leads.

Some people talk about cold email like its a set it and forget it channel.

It's not.

- Research

- Copy iteration

- Inbox management

- Deliverability monitoring

It's an ongoing, continuous job.

Something about how I work.

Saturday is always my day off.

Regardless.

I used to work whenever, wherever, always.

But I've found if you don't mentally commit to a day off, you just burn out.

Sunday to Friday, I'm all out.

7am to 10pm.

But Saturday?

I'm done.

Even if I'm just inside watching TV and painting my furniture.

Easy to forget that life isn't just about career.

I forget too often.



What's your work schedule like?

Unsure whether to use AI to get clients?

I've spoken to founders who are hesitant around AI.

They say they made an email using AI and it wasn't good.

My response?

That's because you're using AI to build your entire email.

(And usually with fairly basic prompting)

Don't do this.

And forget prompting for a second.

You should be using AI to generate relevant {variables} at scale.

These are the parts of the email that personalize to each lead in a relevant way.

You can do this effectively with Clay (my favourite morning cereal).

We just booked a meeting with a simple personalization that matched the prospect's job title to our client's offer (Azure - 'azure', CTO - 'tech', etc).

You should insert such variables into an email template you've manually written - that's where you can be creative and write differently.

Watch positive replies come in every day.

A campaign I ran for a client taught me 2 things.

Lesson 1 - Don't avoid non-trigger lists.

Yes, triggers are more powerful, because timing is everything.

But even a broken clock is right at twice a day, so get some volume under your belt.

The thing that made this campaign generate a solid number of opps was that the lead magnet was strong.

It was very unique to the client (unlikely competitors have this), and was very relevant to the ICP.

Lesson 2 - having a curiosity driven, relevant lead magnet can generate conversations even where there isn't a trigger.


Don't neglect the 97%, but go at them heavy.

3 lessons in messaging strategy.

this will change your life.

1. Trigger segmentation


You don't need necessarily one golden trigger for 10,000 leads.

But if you can find 2 or 3 that are relevant, segment across that.

the volume will be lower, but its got a better likelihood of bangin.


2. Pattern breaking

Do you sound salesy?

I repeat, do you sound salesy mother fu

Okay you get it 


3. Leave open doors and ways out


Don't make the prospect feel like you're cornering them.

Asking to speak to someone else, or asking if there is a better time maybe next month, as examples, can signal that you're not pushy...


and it may lead to useful info or a referral.


4. I said 3 u walrus.

Quick tip for frustrated Apollo.io users.


If you're annoyed that you can't go past page 100 when compiling leads from the 'Total' lead search.

It's because you shouldn't compile from there.

Save leads from the 'Net New' part - you won't need to go past page 100 because the number will whittle down as you save them.

I think most people know this, but had a few q's.

Small tip, big refrigerator.

Pablo Gallego 💡and I had a chat recently about email deliverability.

One thing's for sure - he knows his stuff.

Here's a few tips we discussed you can implement right away:

1. Plain-text emails...no images, no links

2. Warm-up calibration...make sure you calibrate this when you start sending campaigns so you don't suddenly send way more than you should

3. Dedicated IPs...these come with pros and cons. If you have an in-house IT team, it may be worth looking into if you can manage it.

4. Outlook/Gmail - ultimately, these are still your strongest bet as a business owner.

5. Spam words - don't ruin good deliverability with an email full of dollar signs and capitalized 'FREE' offers.

You lost a client yesterday and don't know it.

This prospect was booked into a meeting via email within 1 hour of this 'not interested' response.

The reason?

The 'Just before I go' tactic.

If you get a response where the lead says they're not interested for whatever reason, do this.

"Just before I go - {tailored reframe}"

Reframe the value prop based on what they've said.

Otherwise you might just lose potential clients and not even know it.


In this case, it turned out someone else was handling the specific backfill we'd reached out about, so they said they couldn't help.

We reframed it around how we could also help his team with a different skillset, and he agreed to have a meeting to discuss further.

Lock up yer decision-makers, I'm knockin about.

Do you really know your clients?

If you know the answers to this questions.

Do this:

In today's landscape where everyone is spouting 'we did X in Y' success stories, you want to be able to show a prospect that you've been in their backyard, so to speak.

Meaning - you've actually worked with companies JUST LIKE THEM.

Enter, lookalikes.

You need to find and target companies that are similar to yours, without searching like this lovely lady here.

Everyone knows the holy grail of FB ads for a long-time (and maybe still but not my game) is lookalikes based on existing nurture data.

There's one for cold outbound too.

Ocean.io

Ocean's AI lookalike feature is a brilliant way of finding 000s of companies that are similar to the ones that you know will want to work with you.

Simply feed it company names, like you're feeding ducks at a pond.

And it will furiously spit out loads of companies that match it based on various similarities.

I ran a test for a marketing company that did demand gen and it was so specific in finding 'demand gen' companies, not just a splay of marketing companies.

You can actually choose whether you want it to have 'Medium', 'High', or 'Very High' relevance so you can adjust for volume.
