We have reached a plateau in the volume of AI referral traffic. 

Here is an example from a B2B SaaS website. You can see an "explosion" in AI traffic from last year... because it started from zero. 

But in just one year, we have already arrived at the peak. ChatGPT is leveling off... and every other platform (Perplexity, Gemini, etc) is barely sending any traffic. 

I have observed this same pattern with a dozen more B2B SaaS websites. 

AI search was not designed for traffic generation. It was designed for displaying answers.

This also suggests AI platform user adoption is quickly saturating. 

If your executive team was hoping for "more AI traffic" you can send them this post. 

There ain't gonna be much more. Upward mobility is clearly capped.

I began my professional career as a lost college graduate with a dream of becoming a platinum superstar music producer. 

I wanted to produce records for the biggest artists in the world. After spending 5 years as a music producer & songwriter in NYC, I experienced some success - I was able to work with major artists like Fat Joe & Shaggy.

The grind was brutal, but it helped me realize that musicians and companies have similar problems.

- Cutting through the noise.
- Building a differentiated brand.
- Developing an engaged audience.
- Battling against stronger competitors.
- Converting leads into paying customers.
- Transforming new customers into lifelong fans.

I faced these challenges as a music producer trying to grow my own brand. And without knowing it, I became a self- taught digital marketer.

Forget the "Great Decoupling" - The Great Normalization has begun!

We need to stop crying about impressions up, clicks down 😭

Most websites never deserved those clicks in the first place.

The majority of traffic losses were either topically irrelevant or played a questionable role in influencing conversions.

The SEO playbook that was glorified for the last 10 years prioritized generating useless hordes of informational traffic.

Marketing teams and agencies alike bamboozled executives by pumping up traffic numbers to obscene levels.

People on LinkedIn celebrated programmatic SEO case studies and “SEO heists” that racked up irrelevant clicks — encouraging copycat behavior that ultimately led to the further enshittification of the SEO industry. 

The go-to SEO playbook became a cookie-cutter formulaic bastardization of HubSpot’s inbound marketing model, encouraging the prioritization of high-volume definitional search terms, often via glossary pages and FAQ directories. 

AI search is not the enemy. It's the great equalizer. 

It's time to embrace the great SEO normalization.

My friend Lily Ray wrote an awesome post about the role of SEO's evolution to focus more on 'off-site' marketing - especially among the most highly cited sources in LLMs (YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, Facebook, etc.)

We did this in SEO waaaaay before the AI hype cycle. I used to call it "SERP domination" and others called it "Online Reputation Marketing" but the point is that SEO was never just about producing content for your own website. 

Now here's where it gets tricky: 

1. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's Wikipedia page? NO. 

2. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's Reddit strategy? NO. 

3. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's social strategy? NO. 

4. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's customer reviews? NO.

5. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's Digital PR strategy? NO. 

6. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's influencer strategy? NO.  

7. Should/can SEO teams own and manage a brand's YouTube? YES!!

Traditionally SEO teams have been relegated to "link building" and "blog content" 🤦‍♂️

And yet, a modernized AI visibility strategy relies on channels far beyond SEO blogging and link building. 

That's why SEO teams cannot be successful in a vacuum. 

SEO teams MUST collaborate cross-functionally. 

Otherwise, you're cooked.
