I spent over 20 years in the US and UK, but I'm from Copenhagen, Denmark and an avid runner and movie nerd.

My dad died at 62, a day after his birthday, and taught me a valuable life lesson.

His death also kickstarted my personal “year of death” where I went to funeral after funeral after funeral 😩 

Four in one year - It was really tough.

But my dad’s death had a profound impact on me and how I think about life.

I've chased promotions.

I've chased titles.

I've chased money.

I've chased responsibility.

I've chased the big shiny project.

Nothing wrong with those, except I'm not sure any of them brought joy or fulfillment when I finally achieved them.

What did bring me joy and fulfillment was:
✅ Working with great people
✅ Working on something I believe in
✅ Working to become better and smarter
✅ Working towards a better future for myself and my family and friends

I imagine a world where we can create more joy and fulfillment for everyone by working towards the right things... for you.

Don’t take yourself so seriously!

My favorite people in the world are wicked smart, empathetic, kind, joyful… and don’t take themselves too seriously 😃 

A few years ago, after an intense couple of months Jeremy Cooper and I decided to have some fun on a road trip where we decided to reenact scenes from movies and songs 😳 

So damn nerdy, yes 🤓 

But oh so fun!

To be fair this was Jeremy’s idea but I was only too happy to say yes… because saying yes to life is really what it’s all about for me.

I’m afraid that despite all my ranting about as*holes in the workplace, they are still out there 😡 

Not a day goes by when I don't hear about or read horror stories of poor leadership that is leading to massive attrition, quiet quitting, or deeply unhappy employees.

Leadership is about caring for others. - Yes, dammit it is!

Leadership is about being selfless. - It's not about you!

Leadership is about standing up for the people that you are responsible for. - Hell yeah!

Leadership is about courage and bravery. - Nobody said it would be easy!

Leadership is about providing a positive environment to work in that unleashes everyone’s potential. - You are nothing without a great team!

Leadership is not meant to be easy, or about you, or something you just fall into.

You have to earn it. 

Every day!

We have work to do, but I’m not giving up.

How do you stay so fit?!?!?

That’s a question I got through my DMs and it made me think I don’t really share a lot about how I stay physically healthy, so here goes. (feel free to tune out!)

I start with some core principles, as in why do I want to stay fit?

✅ To have more energy every day. High energy is my super power!
✅ Fitness is the natural gateway drug to happiness, and it’s free!
✅ I want to live a long and happy and adventurous life!
✅ I take pride in staying fit to inspire those around me, including my son!
✅ I'm often in front of other people and I get very self-conscious.

Then I think about fitness along 3 dimensions:

1️⃣ What I eat - I would rate myself medium. I don’t eat crazily unhealthy but I’m also not perfect by any means - too much pizza, pasta, bread, sugar in my diet. My diet though tends to be high protein and lots of veggies. I do swear by vitamins, including C, B, Q10, Magnesium. And I do intermittent fasting, have done for 10 years.

2️⃣ How I sleep - I would rate myself a medium. It used to be sh*t, but I have really worked on it over the last 2 years and it’s better now, not perfect. I have an Oura ring and that helps keep me focused. I take magnesium before bedtime, as well as some herbal sleep stuff, plus I try to read and have no devices in the bedroom.

3️⃣ How I exercise - I would rate myself high. Here’s what I do:

💪 I set fitness goals to train 6/7 days per week, with a mix of cardio x 4 (mostly running) and core/bodyweight/weight training x 2. 

💪 Cardio is super important to me for the dopamine boost I get and for the  meditative state I can get into which I simply don’t get from other exercises.

💪 I try to close my rings every day, with a minimum of walking to do so. My Apple Watch keeps me honest here.

💪 Walking is super important to me and I do a lot of it. I try to walk EVERYWHERE.

💪 I always stand up while working. Have been for years. At home and in the office.

💪 I recently invested in the world’s first foldable treadmill so I can walk/run during meetings where I am not speaking. It's been really great so far.

🎯 Finally, I try to set goals so I have to stay fit. For example, when I turned 35 I wanted to run my first marathon (I did San Francisco) and have done one every year since then. I try to sign up for half-marathons at least every other month so I have to stay consistently fit.

Next up, I've got a race in the alps in the summer. Have to train for that!

So that's it.

Nothing magical.

Focus, consistency, effort, grit.

There are a lot of days, like a lot, where I simply don't want to do anything, yet I know that once I get off my ass and get going I instantly feel better. It requires a lot of willpower though.

🛑 The 5 career killers that will get you nowhere:

🚨 Me-ism - It's good to look out for yourself (for real!), but the people who usually rise to the top are the ones who are looking out for others too.

🚨 Negativity - It's rare to meet people who are overly negative do well. That's doesn't mean to not think critically about things. But defaulting to the negative will sap the energy from any interaction, meeting, and growth opportunity and people will start avoiding you like the plague. 

🚨 Entitlement - This inspires absolutely no one. You should absolutely get paid for the work you do, but in a time where lots of people are struggling, try gratitude as well. 

🚨 Procrastination - GSD is an underrated skill that can take you super far. Doing what you said you'd do is important. Even better is taking initiative on new things. That's a Jedi-master move.

🚨 Stagnation - It's super hard to get ahead if you are still the same person that you were 3 years ago or 5 years ago. Keep growing, learning, pushing yourself.

Yeah, that’s right!

We wanted to have a name that matches our ambition: to make humans more successful.

Take a moment to think about it: 

how did you get to where you are today, to the success you are having? 

I’m sure it’s because a lot of people (teachers, mentors, coaches) believed in you, invested in you, developed you, taught you skills, and pushed you further than you thought you could go. 

I wish this for every human to become the best version of themselves.

Life is nothing without growth.

This is the start of the next stage of our journey as a group of humans as we collectively become Zensai: The Human Success Company, focused on delivering a platform that leads to mastery and greater success. 

For humans.

For teams.

For businesses.

We will work tirelessly to bring this vision to life because the world needs it! When I see these stories of how unhappy, disconnected, unengaged and miserable most workers are, I know we have a lot of work to do.

The way those brands became category-leaders is simple (not easy):

✅ Tell an emotional story that makes people fall in love with what you do.
✅ Paint a picture of a future that’s radically better.
✅ Stand for something, don’t try to please everyone.
✅ Invest in people, as they are your biggest champions and advocates.
✅ Take the long view that it takes time and focus and won't happen in a year.

This is my mission, my passion, to create products and brands that people love. And that's what I'm about to talk about in a podcast in this little pod 😂

This really shouldn't have to be said, but If you are interviewing candidates, here’s a golden rule to follow:

Share the truth about your company!

Candidates can handle all the hype (we are the next unicorn, we are changing the world, we've got kombucha on tap, yay!)

Candidates can even handle bad news (we have some morale issues, our growth is slowing down, ugh!)

But what candidates can’t handle (and shouldn’t) is not being told the truth.

I’ve come in a few times and sometimes there were minor issues and other times it was major things that were swept under the rug. Like really really major things around growth and revenue and culture.

Not cool.
