This is a big problem for me...



If I stop posting for a few weeks, I start to get in my own way a bit.

I’ve just had an entire glorious month off, and I’m definitely feeling it.

So today I thought I would share a few things I do to get my wheels spinning again. 


1 - Break The Seal

The first thing I tell myself is pretty straightforward: 

“Just fucking post something”. 

Your first post after a long break doesn’t have to change the world. It’s just about getting going again. It probably won’t be your best work, and that’s ok. You don’t have to walk out the door and run a marathon. You’re just stretching your writing limbs, and getting ready to run again.



2 - Give Yourself Constraints

Constraints make creativity easier. It seems counterintuitive, but there is freedom in having to stick to certain rules. Instead of being able to write anything and everything (and ending up writing nothing, and watching chefs make french toast on Youtube), try writing to a very particular brief.

Some constraints I’ve found that work well:

- Write, edit and post in under an hour
- Write a post based on work you did this week
- Listen to a podcast episode, then share 5 insights

If you find one that works for you, note it down for next time you get stuck.



3 - Build An Inspiration List

I have a list of about 20 creators whose work always inspires me. I’ve saved links to all their “Recent Activity” pages. If I’m stuck staring at the dreaded flashing cursor on a white page, I go and check out their stuff.

Even if they’re in a completely different niche, their content can give me a starting point for my next post.



4 - Write For One Person

Part of the challenge of getting your momentum back is the pressure to show up for your entire audience. But what if you were just writing for one person?

I’m writing this post for one of our community members who is struggling with getting back to content. 



5 - Turn a Comment Into a Post

LinkedIn makes it easy to see all your comments - just go to your profile and you’ll find the option to review your comments under “Activity”.

Review your last 10 comments, and see if one of them could be the basis for your next post.



6 - Rewrite Your Greatest Hits

Refer back to your posts from 6-12 months ago. Choose one that performed well, and write the updated version, or take it in a different direction entirely.



7 - Note To Self

Write the exact post you need to read. Put what you’re wrestling with right now on the page, and then give yourself the advice you need to solve it. 

That’s what I’m doing right now.

LinkedIn Strategy for Founders | Featured by The Futur, Forbes, Entrepreneur, CXL & The DO Lectures

Top 1% creators do something different.

Once you see this, it will change how you write.

There is a tension within every creator who strives to do great work.

It’s a balancing act.

You’re a professional. You need to show up consistently, sure. You need to check the boxes to ensure your work gets seen - hooks, imagery, instant gratification for the reader.

You can’t just wait for inspiration to strike. When it’s time to work, you need to sit down and do it. 

You need to be clear about who your audience is, and the problems they’re wrestling with, and how they can solve those problems. You need to find a posting cadence you can sustain, and have the discipline to stick to it. This is all true and unavoidable.

But more importantly, you need inherent love for the craft. You need to love to write, and to create space for your mind to wander to interesting places, and to teach, and to tell stories. You have to want to write for its own sake. If you don’t love it, you will be left behind by those who do.

We don’t ask the painter why they paint, or the singer why they sing. We don’t tell the dancer that there’s no point dancing unless she makes money from it. 

Writing is no different.
