I Killed My Phone Addiction ☎️ 
(maybe forever?...)

Two weeks ago, I removed all social media from my phone, including LinkedIn.

I was constantly on LinkedIn and Reddit.
It was becoming a problem.

I got tired of being a screen slave.
So I deleted ‘em both.

My phone is really boring now.
All the fun stuff has been removed.

It took a little while to sink in.
At first, I was picking my phone up every 5 minutes.

I would unlock…
then remember I’d deleted all the fun stuff…
then put it back down again…
Then I’d repeat the cycle.

Unlock. 
Remember. 
Put down.
Repeat.

Over and over.
A monkey pressing a button to get a treat.

So it’s been two weeks.
Here’s how it’s going.



𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗
- My ability to concentrate has been transformed.
- It feels like my brain is on steroids.
- I can stay focused for hours now.

There’s no nagging desire to “just check my phone”.
My phone sucks now. 
It’s the least appealing option.

This is most noticeable when I’m reading.
I read for hours now, as I did when I was a kid.

I am devouring novels.
I spend entire days reading.
I can easily visualise what the author is describing.
There’s no effort required.

With business books, I’m able to read a chapter, make notes about how I could apply the lessons, and then pick up where I left off.

Reading has become my go-to activity.
Instead of reaching for my phone, I reach for my kindle.



𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗗
- I am much less connected to LinkedIn.
- I can’t chat to friends in the DMs all the time.

I can’t endlessly entertain myself with interesting tidbits while having coffee, or sitting in traffic, or resting at the gym.

And…that’s it.



𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧?
This experience makes me want to take things further.

In spite of a drastic improvement, I’m still using my phone to read the news, or play NYT games, or check email.

On the surface, these are all relatively fine. It’s not like I’m spending hours on Instagram.

But I’d rather have a better brain.

I fired a client today.
$5000 down the drain.

Poof. Gone.

But there was no question in the end.
It was the right thing to do. 

Here’s what happened.

I run a live music agency called Findaband.
This client requested a quote.
We sent him one.

He didn’t like the price.
He told us how much it should cost.
He made it sound like we were idiots.
Big red flag.

But we said, sure.
Let’s see what we can do.
And we went back with a discounted price.

And we thought, maybe that’s that.
Maybe it will all be fine from here.

But it wasn’t. 
It never is.

He wasn’t happy.
He required numerous changes.
He wanted us to customize our services to suit him.
Red flag # 2.

We don’t really do that.
But we said, sure.
Let’s see what we can do.
We made the changes he requested.

And we thought, ok. 
Maybe that’s the end of it.
Maybe it will be plain sailing from here.

Surprise. It wasn’t.

We sent him our contract.
He filled it in, and sent it back.
But he changed everything.

All our terms and conditions had been edited.
He changed them to what he wanted them to be.
Good for him. Bad for us.
Red flag # 3.

That should have been the final straw.
I should have told him to jump in the lake.

I’d love to say that’s what I did.
But I didn’t.
I thought about it for quite a while.
Because I didn’t want to give up the booking.
Even after all of this, I wanted to keep the money.

Eventually, I realized I had no choice.

I fired him.

When you first start out in business, every dollar counts. 

You feel you cannot afford to turn away anything, or anyone.

This leads to being overworked, underpaid, stressed and anxious.

Building a great business requires clarity:

Who do you work with?

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧
What is the outcome you achieve?

𝗛𝗢𝗪
What are the systems to achieve that outcome?

Early on, each of these will be a little hazy.
Over time, they’ll come into focus.

When you compromise, and change everything to suit a difficult client, you lose that focus.

This will lead to a frustrating experience for the client, and for your team, and for you. Everybody loses.

Life is too short for bad clients.
Work with people who appreciate what you do.

You’ll build a better business, and a better life.

The algorithm is a bully.

It wants to keep everyone on LinkedIn.
It doesn’t want you to go viral.
It doesn’t want you to make money.

Here’s how I beat the bully.



𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧
If you are taking LinkedIn seriously, you’re going to need to take hooks seriously.

Without a great hook, you don’t get the click.

Without the click, your content is not getting read.



𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗨𝗠 𝗖𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗧𝗧𝗢𝗡
Ok, I have to give LinkedIn credit for this.

If you’re a LinkedIn Premium user, you can display a link which shows up under your name when you post.

Change out the link as often as you like.

Write something like “Scroll up and click the link under my name” at the bottom of each post.



𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠
Your post should go live 8am - 10am local time (i.e. where your target market lives) whenever possible. 

This makes a huge difference with getting engagement immediately after posting, and creates social proof that your post is worth reading.



𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 + 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗟𝗬
"Link in the comments" no longer works.

The LinkedIn algorithm buries comments with external links (dick move btw). 

But you can do this instead. 

Post a comment and ask people to “hit like to help”. 

I like to add an image to make it stand out too.

Then, reply to THAT comment with another comment containing a link to your website, landing page, etc.

It’s a little fiddly, but it works. 
I treat it as a secondary way of generating clicks. 

See my comments section for an example.



𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧
Promote one offer per post.

Sometimes I promote my digital products (like today), and sometimes I promote my consulting, or my newsletter. 

Make it easy for your audience.

Give them a single action to take, or they won’t take action.

Too many options = analysis paralysis

I use it to format my posts for mobile, and see exactly how they will look before I hit post.

I also love the ability to make headings bold. 



𝗧𝗘𝗫𝗧 + 𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗘
Text only posts are a waste of good content.

Always include an image to take up as much space in the newsfeed as possible, like I’ve done in this post.

How did I do it?
What’s the big secret?

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹, 𝗜 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽.

I wrote the best post I could.
I hit publish. And that’s it.

Ah wait. That’s not entirely accurate.



I showed up ALMOST every single day. 

I wrote. I hit publish. And that’s it.

No, actually that’s not right either. 



Ok.
Here’s what actually happened:
I was extremely inconsistent.
I was banned from Linkedin six times.

Sometimes, I took a week off.
Or two weeks.
Or a month.

And it was fine.
Every time, I came back refreshed.
I had tons of new ideas.
Nothing bad happened.



HERE’S THE BIG SECRET:

The secret to success on Linkedin, or in business, or anything else, is not aiming for perfection.

It’s the opposite.

It’s getting comfortable with things being imperfect, and doing them anyway.



Chasing perfection will leave you feeling disheartened the moment you miss a day.

It will mean you’ll phone it in when you’re tired, just so you can tick the box.

You’ll start to resent writing.
It will feel like a chore.
You might even start to hate it.



You are not a machine.

Your job is not to wake up, do 1000 push ups, run 10 miles, get in an ice bath and smash out 800 words before breakfast.

It’s ok to just be a human being.

Show up as often as you can.
Do your best when you can.
Forgive yourself when you can’t.

You can try again tomorrow.
Or next Tuesday.
Or next month.

This is my biggest regret (by far) ❌ 
Please don’t make the same mistake...

I didn’t build my email list.

It is my biggest mistake of the past two years.

My goal with this post is to help you avoid making the same mistake.




𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱.

There is no barrier between you and your audience.

- There is no algorithm.
- There is no faceless corporation.
- There is no ulterior motive.

It is the most important asset for any personal brand.

It’s true whether you are on LinkedIn, X, Youtube, or Instagram, or all of the above.

You will become platform agnostic.

You will no longer be a slave to the algo-gods.

You can sell anything, any time. Forever.




𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

I got really good at LinkedIn.
I knew the right buttons to push.
I knew exactly which levers did what.

I got lazy.

I went to ConvertKit to get started.
It was hard.
I wasn't good at it.
I didn't know what buttons and levers did what.

Everyone else’s landing page looked great.
Mine looked like crap.
What was I doing wrong?

Then I had to choose a name for it.
“Sam Browne’s newsletter”?
That's probably not going to work.

Then I had to decide what it would be about.

Just LinkedIn stuff?
Or just entrepreneur stuff?
Or both?
Or something else?




𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗜’𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱:

I wish I'd worked with a coach
- I should have invested in myself.
- I should have worked with an expert.
- I could have saved months of messing around.

I wish I'd just kept kept it simple.
- Turned my posts into newsletters.
- Seriously, just send my LinkedIn posts as newsletters.
- It’s that simple.

I wish I had just f***ing started.
- Imperfectly.
- Crappily.
- That would have been fine.




It would have been better than what I chose instead:

Procrastinate endlessly for two years. ✅




𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁.

It was true in 2014
It’s true in 2024.
It will be true in 2034.
It will be true in 2044.




𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻 2054.

By then, we will be scavenging in a desert wasteland.

It will be a new dark age.
Mutants will roam the ruins of our hubris.
Wild children will speak in growls and barks.
Water will be worth more than gold.

But we can worry about all that later.
For now, let’s just build our lists.

My friend wants to be a Youtuber. 🎥

We meet for lunch once a month.

We always talk about Youtube.
He’s adamant he wants to start.

He said he’s not quite ready.
He said that last time, too.

He knows what he has to do, he said.
He just needs to make a plan.

He needs to get comfortable being on camera.
He knows an actress who can help him.

He needs to get some lights, maybe.
And to learn the editing software.

Then, finally, he’ll be ready.
Until then, not quite.




But it’s not about making a plan.
It’s not about being comfortable on camera.
It’s not about experts, or lights, or editing software.

He needs to put his phone on some books or something, and hit record.

It won’t be very good.
In fact, it will be bad.

But it will exist. It will be done.
That’s one down.

Next time, it will be bad as well.
But a little better.

Then he just has to keep going.

And after doing it over and over 100 times, it will be pretty good.

He’l have a plan.
He’ll be comfortable on camera.
He might get some better lighting.
He might start experimenting with editing software.

But that can all happen later.

Today, he just needs to hit record.




I'm no different to my friend.

I’m thinking about all the things I want to start doing.

I want to build my website, and create courses, and start a podcast, and speak  on stage, and all that stuff.

But I get caught up in the details. All the software, and the jargon, and the knowledge I need, but don’t have.

I get overwhelmed. 
I tell myself I don’t know where to start. 
So I don’t.

And then months go by.
And then years.




It’s good to understand how all the bits and pieces fit together. Of course it is.

And one day, you will.
But today, you just have to start.

It’s true for making videos, or learning to cook, or getting fit. It’s true for everything.

Book a Zoom call with a friend, and record it.

Google a simple recipe, and cook it.

Put your trainers on, and run to the shops.

The first time, it won’t be very good.
In fact, it will be bad.

But it will exist. It will be done.
That’s one down.

When people book a call with me, I ask them why.
There are lots of people who do what I do.

I am not the most "LinkedIn famous"
I am not the cheapest.

Why me?

What Mitch wrote stood out.

A while back, I invited people to submit their websites for review.

I spent 10 minutes reviewing each site, then gave each one a series of simple changes that would increase their conversion rate.

Mitch’s site was one that I reviewed.

I sent him the review, and that was it.

No follow up.
No request for a call.
Nothing.

I forgot all about it, but Mitch didn’t.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲.




I see a lot of people on here talking about how you need to Always Be Selling.

They say that showing up and sharing freely is no way to build a great business.

I disagree.

5 Tips for (Really Good) LinkedIn Content

1 - 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀
There’s a strange obsession with daily posting.
I have no idea why.

I’ve never done it.
I would not recommend it.

You can choose quality or quantity.
You cannot choose both.


2 - 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲
Some days, the ideas come easily.
Some days, you’ll feel like you’ve used them all up.

Rest. Recharge. Be patient.
This game is played in years.


3 - 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁
Find creators who only post good stuff.
Read a handful of their posts.

Ask yourself why you like them.
See if you can incorporate those ideas into your own writing.


4 - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝗜𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
You can use carousels, or videos, or photos.
Or you can just write something good, and hit post.

The message is what's important.
Everything else is wallpaper.


5 - 𝗕𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳.
People are seeking something real.
They can smell it when you’re faking it.

Don’t be afraid to say what you really think.
It will make you stand out in a sea of sameness.

It's slow.

We get to think about every word.
Sometimes we figure it out as we write.

We can't delete mistakes, so we stop worrying about them.

We can't quickly check our email or social media.
It's just us, the pen and the page.

A good LinkedIn post has 4 essential ingredients:

• Hook
• Content
• Call To Engage
• Post Script

Here’s how to do each one.




𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗞 🐟
The first 2 lines are the hook.
They grab your reader’s attention.
They stop scrolling.
Then they click “see more”.

Get it right, and you’ll get clicks
Get it wrong, and you won’t.

Keep it short.
Make it easy to read.

Create curiosity.
Make it irresistible to see what happens next.

The hook is there to get the click.
Nothing more.

• Get the click




𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧 ✍️
The key to good content is to express one idea.

Most people try to do too much.
Then they get overwhelmed.

Then they post nothing.
Ask me how I know.

People are looking for bite sized wins.
They want to read something for 1-2 minutes.
They want to feel it was worth their time.

• Don't try to do too much
• Share one idea
• Create bite sized wins




𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗚𝗘 ❓
So you nailed the hook.
You have their attention.

Then you wrote a really good post.
One idea, expressed clearly.
Beginning, middle and end.
Terrific.

But social media is a conversation.
The clue is in the name.
Now, it’s time to involve your reader.

Ask them a question.
Ask them to share their thoughts.
It’s that simple.

You could even write “Agree?” but I’d rather you didn’t.

• Ask for their thoughts
• W̶r̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶“A̶g̶r̶e̶e̶?̶”




𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗧 💰
We finish with the Post Script.
This is the "sign off" at the bottom of your post.
It’s where you grow your audience, and get leads.

Include your name, and tag yourself.
Invite people to follow you.

Mention the clients you work with.
Share the outcome you achieve.
Make it clear how they can take the next step.

What's the Secret to $$$ on Linkedin?
(Everyone gets this wrong)

If you want to generate leads, calls and conversions on LinkedIn, here’s how to do it.

You need to define:
1 - Who you work with
2 - The outcome you achieve
3 - What makes you special


I call it the Personal Elevator Pitch (PEP).
Here are the 3 steps in more detail.


1 - WHO YOU WORK WITH

Define who you help.

This could be by :
- age
- gender
- industry
- education,
- ncome
- business size
- etc

Get clear on who you work with, and who you don’t.

This will allow you to craft your content to appeal to your target audience.



2 - THE OUTCOME YOU ACHIEVE

It’s tempting to share your 8 Step Success Formula.
It took you months, or even years, to refine it.

But the truth is this:
Your prospect is only interested in the outcome.
They don’t care about how you do it.


Their question is this:
"What is the outcome I get when I work with you?"
Make sure you can answer that question.



3 - WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL

So now you've defined:
- Who you work with
- The outcome you achieve for them

So far, so good.

Your prospect reads your profile and thinks:

“That describes me, and my desired outcome”.
Now they have a final question.

Why should they work with you specifically?
What makes you special?

There are many ways to tackle this.

You can share successes:
- Your most impressive past clients
- Total revenue generated
- Total number of reviews
- A testimonial quote from a past client

You can also focus on how easy or risk-free it is:
- A short time duration
- A guarantee
- The fact that it’s 100% “done for you”


Here are a few examples of how that might look:

What content works best on LinkedIn? ✍️
Here’s why I write what I write.


𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁.
You showcase your skills and experience.
You give your reader a valuable lesson, free of charge.

You advertise what you offer, without making people feel like they’re getting sold to.

So why do anything else?

Why not just do educational content all the time?




When you share personal content - snapshots from throughout the course of your life - 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀.

You’re doing much more than that.

Your sharing your values.

What you’re working towards, and why.

Who you were before, and who you've become, and who you want to be.

You’re sharing what makes you tick.

The thoughts and dreams and ideas that make you, you.




Something I noticed recently:
𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

They’re interesting, and creative, and have big goals.
They’re funny, and clever, and kind.
They’re driven by more than just money.

I stay in touch with them, long after we’ve stopped working together.

Many of them become friends.
And that makes sense.

They’ve read my educational content, sure.
They liked it. 
It was helpful.

Then they read my personal content.
The things I value, they value as well.

They see themselves in my stories.
They recognise that we are likeminded people.
That's why they chose to work with me.

They read what I've written, and they feel connected.
𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁.





Educational content has its place, but it also has its limits.

There are only so many ways to share SEO checklists, or design tips, or copywriting formulas, or m***** f***ing AI prompts.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. 
They’re part of you.
They made you who you are.



Share what you know.
But share your stories, too.
