Feeling lost, stressed, burned out, or unable to get off the achievement treadmill?

Want to take design a life you actually love, but don't know where to start?

One of my biggest passions is demystifying success & happiness.

I've spent a lot of my life working incredibly hard (past the point of burnout) and still not feeling satisfied by my achievements, feeling like achieving one goal only meant that the goal post had to be moved further away from the next one.

While I'm far from having figured this out, I co-host a podcast (Happily Ambitious) and a companion newsletter (The Ambitious Breakthrough) to learn from some of the best in this area and share my journey as I go.

My goal is to build in public - through my role in SaaS sales, as a podcast host, as one of the founders of a growing community, and as someone who very frequently deals with all of the stressors described above.

💫  How I’ve landed every sales role I actively pursued - often with less experience than other applicants:

Relying on strategy - not hope.

For anyone on the job hunt right now, here’s the exact strategy I’ve used every time I’m on the market:

1/. Research

Sounds obvious, but it’s so often overlooked. More than just the company and what they sell - know about their history, their goals, their stage of funding, their org chart, their competitors, their reviews, there’s literally endless roads to go down here. If it’s a top choice org - don’t skimp on this.


2/. Always go the extra mile

Of course you should be sending followup emails after interviews (even after applying to stay on their radar) but rather than generic “thank you” emails, view each one as a chance to enhance your application.

I have sent 30-60-90 plans, sample prospecting emails, etc. - get creative here.

3./ Be prepared to sell yourself

Know your numbers. Your strengths, your weaknesses, your goals, why you’d be a better fit than everyone else applying. Be prepared to talk about it with conviction. Practice this, make it a no-brainer. You have to believe in your value before anyone else.

4/. Treat it like a deal cycle

The super cool part of interviewing for a sales role is that you get to prove your skills as a seller as you move through the interview cycle. Stay on top of your follow-ups, guide conversations, set next steps, and close that deal.

5./ Have a point of view

This ties into the research piece above - why this opportunity? Why now? This is what takes you over the edge from a decent candidate to a highly compelling one.

“This seems like a cool opportunity!”
-vs-
“Based on my previous experience doing (xyz) at (xyz), I believe I would be an excellent fit for this role as you move upmarket and tap into more strategic deal cycles"

No brainer.

Want to leave a lasting impression? Develop a compelling narrative.

6./ Be prepared to answer the tough questions 

Maybe you had a bit of a sales slump and missed a quarter. Maybe you didn’t leave your best role in the best of circumstances. Assume those questions are going to come up, and be ready to answer them with rationality and conviction.

3 things I'm doing to reset my energy after a tough few weeks:

after being sick for 2 straight weeks, dealing with EOQ stress and chaos, and a bunch of other random life events, I'm feeling a little rundown.

it's very easy to let that rundown energy linger, making everything 10x harder than it needs to be. so I've been on a mission to learn how to more effectively manage and get through it.

1./ Actually resting.

buckle up folks, this one is revolutionary -

I've always struggled with giving myself time to rest, feeling so much guilt that I'm not getting something done/progressing towards a goal/whatever nonsense you wanna tell yourself.

I've been slowlllly learning that actually listening to the signals your body is giving you (i.e. letting it slow down, get some extra sleep, and reducing activity when you're feeling exhausted) is a major key to feeling like a functioning human being (crazy stuff i know).

it's ok if you need to prioritize sleep over a hard workout. it's ok if you need to spend a sunday chilling on the couch. REST people we aren't machines.

2./ Saying "no" more

I have a bad habit of trying to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way, which, shocker, leads to being overwhelmed, overworked, and not showing up anywhere at my best.

it's ok to say no sometimes, especially if you're feeling burned out. cut back on the things on your plate as much as you're able during that recovery time - otherwise you'll be on a never ending treadmill of moreeeeee. those things will still be there when you're ready.

3/. Acceptance

I said it above and I'll say it again - you. are. not. a. machine.

you are not built to be firing on all cylinders 100% of the time.

but we often put those expectations on ourselves, and feel sad/frustrated/like a bit of a failure when we can't live up to them.

I used to fight this so so much. Why am I tired? Why can't I do alllll the things all the time? Why don't I feel like I can keep up with XYZ person I see on LinkedIn supposedly crushing it in everything?

It's exhausting (which just compounds the original problem). 

Accepting the way things are, putting the work in place to get to a better state, and letting go of that resistance is much easier said than done, but hugely impactful.

This is your reminder that just as you aren’t guaranteed a repeat of your successes or Q1, you also aren’t doomed to an encore of its failures.

Doesn’t matter what happened, you have a clean slate.

Scary when it comes to your numbers switching back to zero overnight, but empowering when it comes to the pursuit of new habits and better outcomes.

So if you’re feeling stressed, or overwhelmed, or even resting on your laurels a bit -

- Nothing is guaranteed, good or bad. 
- The rules are made up. 
- You can create massive change in a short amount of time - your life could look radically different 3 months from now if you want it to.
- you are under no obligation to remain the same.

3 *easy* habits to start today that your future self will be incredibly grateful for -

1. WEAR SUNSCREEN ☀ 

yes all of you

at least on your face/neck - major key to preventing skin cancer & sun damage (hyperpigmentation/wrinkles/etc).

bonus: talk to your derm about incorporating retinol into your routine, game changer for the skin as well 

2. Set up some automated savings accounts. 💰 

These can be small amounts, or big amounts, anything from emergency savings, to holiday funds, to a treat yo'self stash.

The main point here is that you don't have to think about it, and it compounds faster than you think.

Open a high-yield savings account (I like the Capital One 360), set up some automated savings rules, and forget about it for now.

then when you need it - it's already there :) much less discipline required

3. Develop a "little wins" mindset

If you are an all-or-nothin' type of person, making progress can be very challenging and situation dependent.

You feel like you are wasting your time if you're not doing a massive effort, so you neglect the opportunity for steady, compounding progress made up of lots of little efforts.

The sooner you can train yourself out of this the better - 
repeat after me:

small progress is still progress. a tiny win is still a win. tiny consistent efforts over time are the ultimate key to lasting success.

get that drilled into your brain, your actions, your habits and your life will improve exponentially - i promise you.
