Tres West

In 2022, LinkedIn suggested the role of Product 
Management was one of the top 25 in-demand roles. 

More recently, I've seen posts that suggest 
product management has a 66% attrition rate. 

Here's a unique take from an employee in a 
large corporation as well as someone who has 
their own startup in the product space. 

Corporate world:
- Poliltics
- Feature factory
- Influence without authority
- Lots of admin and overhead
- Wildly unrealistic workloads and deadlines
- Strategy and roadmap dictated by corporate
- Fixing other people's s**t work from 20 years ago
- Stakeholders don't understand product management
- Get second hand info from the sales team about customers
- Not actualy product management, more like project management
- Not a real prouct manager, just a backlog manager in a feature factory
- Very little accountability as don't set the product strategy, vision, roadmap, etc

Startup world:
- No politics
- Minimal overhead
- Set vision, mission, strategy
- Actual product manager role
- 100% accountability for everything
- Test, measure, pivot based on new data
- Move quickly, easily, freely, based on new data
- Wildly unrealistic workloads but I set the deadlines
- Constantly delivering the highest value to customers
- Building on the latest tech stack with minimal tech debt
- Following product management and software best practices

If people moving into product management are doing so
because they were sold the "you're the mini-CEO of the product"
BS which is more akin to being a startup founder but 
finding out it's more like the corporate role above, 
then it's no wonder the attrition rate is so high. 

In my experience you have to LOVE product management AND
you need to have a thick skin and immeasurable patience. 

It's absolutely not for the faint of heart.

meticulous process that requires 
strategic planning, seamless collaboration, and 
unwavering focus on delivering value to the end-user. 

However, it's not without its challenges. Here are the top five 
challenges in product development and their actionable solutions.

Tech debt is called debt for a reason but
nobody really thinks about it in the same 
way as financial debt. Allow me to explain.....

Financial debt:
- You have income and ability to repay debt
- You take out a loan at a certain interest
- You invest the borrowed money in the hope of benefits
- If your income stays the same and the interest continutally 
increases, there will come a time where the interest is so high
you will not be able to repay the loan and you go bankrupt

Tech debt
- You have a limited number of developers
- You create tech debt as you work
- You have the ability to schedule work to address
some of the tech debt
- If you don't, and continue to work, there will come a time
when there are too many defects, bugs, other issues, 
new projects being created, the capacity of the dev team 
will never be enough to repay the tech debt that is being created.
Even if you spend 100% of your capactiy, it won't be
enough to pay off the "interest" on the tech debt loan and the
project will go "bankrupt" due to the amount of tech debt.

SH: Bug A is blocking Bug B

Tres: Bug A is in the sprint and is in In Progress

SH: If we could progress Bug A, that would be good

Tres: Bug as is being actively worked on. I can't progress it any further than the present. If I did, it would be in the future and I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
