Data Science is sexiest job of the 21st century. But the truth is it's HARD to break in. I've found the requirements to land a data scientist job to be nearly impossible. The best path I've seen people take is to become a data analyst FIRST, and then a data scientist later. That way you get paid to learn. So if you want to be a data scientist, consider starting as a data analyst. Just my 2 cents.
Happy Women's History Month! 🎈 To celebrate, I wanted to highlight 6 of my favorite data analysts 👇 1) Sundas Khalid - Sundas taught me to keep going, even when you feel like giving up. You can change your life with data! 2) Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic - Cole taught me that your analysis isn't as important as how you communicate it. Presentation matters! 3) Rachael Finch - Rachael taught me to ABN...Always Be Networking! That's how she landed her first data job & broke into the field. 4) Hana M. K. - Hana taught me to stop chasing every shiny new tech skill. They aren't Pokemon cards! Just use what you already know! 5) Jess Ramos, MSBA - Jess taught me that sometimes, you get lucky because you work hard! Send cold messages, ask questions, and be open! 6) Erin Shina - Erin taught me that Projects = Proof. She pivoted into data from Music Therapy in less than 60 days. I created a compilation of all 6 of these analysts stories and advice. This is the stuff they don't teach in school. Want to hear their full stories? Meet me in the comments! 👇 Repost to share these women's stories!!!
Applying to jobs online is basically like throwing your resume into a d*rn black hole. It freaking sucks. Here’s what do do instead 👇 Get a referral. Yes, I know - easier said than done. But referrals are 12x more effective than applying online. This means if you spent 1 hour trying to get a referral, it would be equal to 12 hours of applying to jobs. But how do you get a referral…. (keep reading). It’s really hard. And honestly, it’s awkward. It always has been, always will be. But there’s things you can do to make it LESS awkward… 1 - Be Brief 2 - Be Human 3 - Ask for Advice (not a referral) This week, I sat down with Steve Dalton, author of The 2-Hour Job Search, who walked me through an EXACT way to escape the online application matrix. In our full 40 minute convo, he taught me who to teach out to, what to say, and how to sell yourself (in a not totally weird way). If you’re a job seeker, you need to listen to this episode - Data Career Podcast, wherever you find podcasts - including comments below 👇

It involves way less job boards, resumes, and job applications. Instead, it's more about talking to people, opening your mouth, and sharing honestly. It's not for everyone, but you owe it to yourself to check this method out... 👇

In today’s world, data skills are essential. I realized this when I joined Avery Smith's Data Career Jumpstart program. My previous experience was limited to analyzing sports stats and using spreadsheets casually. However, I found the program to be a perfect fit for my career aspirations. Now, I’ve progressed from no experience to completing projects in Excel and Tableau. Currently, I’m engaged in a project in SQL, which pushes my skills further. This journey shows the value of stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new challenges. Have you ever stepped outside your comfort zone and discovered something great? I’d love to hear your story!

🚨Attn Job Seekers: beware of this huge scam that's going on right now 👇 You'll get an email saying "Sorry, the position you applied for has been filled, but we think there's another position you'd be a good fit for." They'll then send you a Calendly link where on the phone, they'll "hire you" & try to get you to buy supplies and they'll reimburse you later. Or get your social security number. It's all a big, sad con. Screw them. Here's 3 ways to spot the red flags. 🚩 1. Check Their Email - often times, they'll be using a gmail account. No actual recruiters are using just a plain gmail account. They use company emails. Also, make sure the name on the front of the email matches the name the signed the email with. 2. Find Them on LinkedIn - see if they have a LI profile. Most do not. If they do, analyze it closely. Do they have more than 20 connections? Does their previous job experience look valid? If no, scam. If yes, sometimes they'll "steal" actual recruiters identity. Message the recruiter and ask to confirm what you were told in the email. 3. How Specific Were They - did they tell you the companies name? Did they tell you their name? Did they tell you the interviewers name? Most the time, scams are incredibly vague. If the interview is happening via chat, it's probably not real. When in doubt, ask a friend or a mentor. I helped 3 DAA students not get scammed this week alone. It's a scary world out there. Be safe. ♻️ Reshare this to spread the word!
Day 3 of Making LinkedIn Human Again 👉 sometimes LinkedIn puts me into mini depressions. Everyone always seems like they’re doing amazing things. New jobs. Promotions. Releasing new product. Launching this. With that, today, I’m proud to announce… I survived the day with 2 kids under 2 ✌️ And I nearly failed at that too 😂
If this post gets 250 likes, I'll build a list of companies that are currently hiring H-1B visa holders and international students in the data space.
This week, I analzyed 6 data analytics job postings, their requirements, and their salaries. Here’s the 7 big lessons I learned 👇 1) you kinda need a college degree 2) senior doesn’t mean more money 3) learn excel, SQL, tableau 4) remote jobs are vanishing 5) data jobs are everywhere 6) a lot of jobs are underpaid rn 7) you don’t need a master’s The salaries ranged from $35k to $200k and I closely analyzed what you need to do to cross into the six-figure world. S My full analysis is available on the pod/YT! (See below) 👇
In data, the job description is always 10x more scary than the actual job Why do we do that?!?!
Big news. I'm quitting LinkedIn. At least the way, I used to do it. I have just grown tired and bored of this platform. And it's mostly my fault. I'm really missing talking like a normal human being. I feel like I have to make all my posts punchy. I also feel like I'm talking to all 135,000 of you at once. And I don't really want to do that any longer. I just want to talk to 1 of you at a time, like a friend. So here's what I'm going to try out: ✨ Making more normal sounding posts (like this) ✨ Responding to all relevant comments on my post ✨ Commenting on YOUR posts more I just want to have more conversations. So if you vibe with that, say hello in the comments. 🙌 Let's get the convo started!
Today is DAY 1 of me trying to "Make LinkedIn Human Again". Let's start by playing a fun/easy game that will GROW your network! Here's how the game works... Bonus point: comment on their comment and let them know you sent a request. Everyone should leave with 5 new awesome connections! 👇 Ready? Let's go! See you in the comments!
Excel sucks. Use SQL. SQL is too basic. Use Python. Python is slow. Use Julia. Power BI is ugly. Use Tableau. Tableau makes no sense. Use Power BI. People will tell you anything & everything. Cut the noise. Start with what you're comfortable with. Let's start caring LESS about the tools And start caring MORE about solutions. Solutions > Tools. Always.
