People thought I was crazy for leaving HubSpot for a start up.

But in reality, it was not a rash decision. 

There is something "special" about start ups that larger companies do not have

For me, it's the ability to forge a new path, get the chance to work on things traditionally "out of scope" of your role and the fire the right founders bring

If you have not worked at a start up I strongly believe you should

Perks:
- Pushes your skill set
You will be forced to develop new skills and grow into expectations.  There is no room to say "that's not my job". 

- Get insight into the economics of building a company
Every good startup I have been at has been transparent. You get an insider seat to things like cash flow, unit economics, churn rates, head count planning, ect. Not only do you SEE it, you FEEL it. 

- Career rocket fuel
I went from an entry level BDR to the highest sales role at the company in less then a year while at Divvy. The kicker is I was brand new to SaaS. That doesn't happen when you are a number on a spread sheet haha. 

- New perspectives
Great founders are a little insane. In a good way. They are visionaries and experts at mixing passionate vision with brute force execution. It provides you with a new lens to see the world through. 

If you're early in your career I'm a firm believer the BEST thing you can do is roll the dice and grab a seat at a startup. You will get more than an MBA worth of practical education at formula one pace. 

If you have been in the work place for a long time, you will be pushed and become 100X better in your field.

The down side? Lots of risk and uncertainty. But man is it worth it!

How can working at a startup benefit my career?

Am I the only one that feels cheated from the HubSpot news? 🤣 

I was expecting a new Hub or new AI stuff or an acquisitions and I got a slide deck and fancy marketing website.....

Oh well, back to work!

The power of team is real. 

It's so hard to go alone.

A team helps you:

- Iterate faster
- Challenge how you do things (to improve your workflow)
- Assign out projects or tasked based on skill set 
- Push you to become better

I did not realize this until I was a solo sales person.

It lead me doing everything medium good. 

But now I have a team and am SOOOO thankful for them. 

If you want to go fast, go alone. 

If you want to go far, go together. 

The million dollar question I get asked over and over?

How do you create pipeline as a services business.

Sadly there is no silver bullet. Anyone that tells you there is likely is trying to sell you something lol. 

But here is how I have helped these companies tackle the problem.

1: You need to define your value story first
Who do you serve? Why are you a fit for them? What problems do you solve? Why should they even care? What makes you diff, better, special? 

2: Based on your value story, make a few hypotheses about the channels that will work to reach your target client. 

3: This is the crappy part, now you need to go do it! Put the plan and messaging into action for at least 3 to 6 week and NEVER miss a day. 

You need to see what resonates and what does not. If you are not consistent then you will never know what will work or won't work.

4: Iterate on 1-3

I have seen cold email, linkedin, partnering with partners, VC/PE firm relationships, referral networks, internal relationship building with HubSpot, leveraging communities, working install base and TONS more work. 

But the one constant is you have to be deliberate and consistent. So give it a try and get off the sidelines.

It's not about the hustle. 

It's not about having a secret trick.

It's really not even about the services you offer.

I call it the mechanic problem.

I "grew up" selling cars to get through college. Almost 5 year total! And what did I learn?

The mechanics always had the most beat up barley working cars hahaha

They spent all day fixing cars so the last thing they wanted to do was fix their own. 

What does this have to do with services businesses? 

You spend all day being a "mechanic" fixing other companies marketing, sales and service issues and the last thing you want to do is fix your own. 

Yet its one of the best things you could invest in.

What are some strategies for scaling service businesses?

Your delivery sucks.... 

and here is why....

- It takes people off the apps they work in.
- It only solves for the highly engaged employees (because they have to go search for it)
- It's long and painful
-It's not timely (not in the right place at the right time)

To be a top notch services business you need to nail two things

1: Can I build what we promised? (if not you are not going to be around very long)

2: Does the team actually use what We built and use it correctly?

If you are not hyper focused on this you will die 1,000% in the coming years

Companies are tired of spending thousands for medium good results from services businesses. Especially when AI is catching up and can do some of the work without the big bill.

They want the right thing built AND their team to adopt what was built so they will see ROI. And AI cannot do that. YOU can do that with the right DAP. 

That's what gets me PUMPED to work at Supered

No you don't....

This was a convo I had today with a services business looking to up their lead gen efforts. They wanted to make a campaign and have targeted post with the goal of ppl booking meetings. 

This does not work. 😴 

What does work?

Curating your audience, connect with people in your ICP.

Sharing your real POV not with the goal of booking meetings, but providing value and starting discussions. 

If you share your authentic self, add value to peoples day and do everything with the intent of a discussion not booking a meeting, Linkedin will be MUCH more effective for you. 

People want to engage with other people and felt heard. They do NOT want to be blasted with a fire hose of content that is trying to sell them something.

As a HubSpot user I don't have time to go to a landing page and sift through product updates then spend time figuring out why and how we could use it to get a business outcome.

How I felt after today's Spotlight announcement 😅

Love the branding, love the pizzaz, love the opportunity for a sales demo...

But honestly? Wouldn't know where to start looking as an end user.

What's easier to look at? Product Updates in my HubSpot instance.

Even easier? Following the HubSpot partners on LinkedIn that keep up to date on this stuff and post about the benefits of the newest update... like...it's...their...job...

Even easier than THAT?? Working with a HubSpot Partner who knows my business well enough that they SEND me the product update and tell me how it would impact my business.

(And even easier than that... a Supered partner that sends me a quick Update in my HubSpot instance to check out the new product update with all of the above and a video explaining.)

Love product features, trust me, but unless I've asked for it or understand how it'll impact my business...it's just...noise.

Your training probably sucks. 🤐 

The good news is that it doesn't have to. 

Bold statement, feel free to challenge it. 

But here's my take:

When it comes to learning & development, traditional options predominantly relied on recording videos and writing docs then forcing your team to go through all of the content.

Sales reps, for example, want to sell. 

If you are doing anything that slows them down or makes them bored... you've already lost the battle.

Will they watch the video and take the test?

NO.

They will skip the video. Take the test regardless of whether they pass/fail. And then they'll get back to work.

Learning has to be interesting. 

It has to be intuitive.

And there should be no friction between the way a company is educating and the way they want their team to learn.

Coming from someone who was NOT good in school.... everyone has preferences for how they learn!

🔥 Not quite 4/24 but HubSpot has dropped a HUGE beta. The Customer Success workspace!!!

What is it?
A brand-new dedicated workspace designed to help customer success managers drive their book of business and increase retention. This workspace reminds CSMs of their daily tasks, allows them to create custom views of their most important segments to prioritize outreach, and helps them monitor activities from their key accounts. Now, customer success managers in HubSpot can start to see the information they need all in one place.

Why does it matter?
Customer success managers don't have dedicated tooling or a home inside of HubSpot. Instead, they spend a lot of time bouncing around, hunting for the information that they need to do their jobs. The customer success workspace will provide a dedicated home base and starting point for CSMs in HubSpot. The workspace will keep CSMs organized and focused, allowing them to address the needs of more of their customers.

How does it work?
Customers can find the new workspace under Service --> Customer Success. The workspace is customized to the user who is viewing the workspace. Admins can decide whether to base the workspace off of HubSpot's company object or a custom object, as well as decide which properties should be used to indicate account ownership and renewal date.

The workspace includes:
Summary page with the reps tasks, daily schedule and key reports (only single object reports) pinned by an admin.
Portfolio view where users can see both team and private views tracking key segments.
Pipeline tab showing all deal and ticket pipelines
Activity feed showing the most recent activities taken by contacts associated with companies owned by the user
We've also introduced a new permission Customer success workspace that'll allow users to set-up, edit and manage the customer success workspace and customer health scores. Other users with access to a Service Hub Pro or Enterprise seat will be able to use the workspace and customer health score functionality. Super admins will now be able to grant this permission to CS leaders.

Who gets it?
Any user with a Service Hub Pro or Enterprise seat can access the customer success workspace.

I'm SO PUMPED about the HubSpot ecosystem

SO PUMPED, that I bet my house and children's education on it. 

So when I heard about the new podcast from Brian Garvey and Karen Ng, I got excited. 

And I got EVEN MORE PUMPED after listening to the first episode that features Yamini Rangan and her perspective on the ecosystem. 

Summary: HubSpot is going places 🚀 🚀 

Here at the things that make me (even more) excited after listening. 

1) The Brian Halligan Mandate: Make the ecosystem 1+1 = 5. 

2) Yamini's Background: She has sold, created GTMs for scale, been an engineer, and even been a partner. That's a lot of awesome in one person. 

3) Project Unity: HubSpot is hyper-focused on decreasing friction between and increasing collaboration for direct reps and partners (both services and apps). This is particularly important as HubSpot competes (and wins) in more midmarket deals (200 - 2000) person organizations. 

4) Ecosystem Belief: It's clear the leaders are committed to creating a platform. And it's impossible to build a platform without a thriving ecosystem of services and app partners.

5) EVEN MORE ecosystem belief: Ecosystems are accelerators. They don't have linear growth, they have exponential growth. The more customers you have, the more partners you have. The more partners, the better results you have. Example of the ecosystem effect = it took HubSpot 15k years to get to 100k customers; took them 2 years to get the next 100k. 🤯 

6) Customer Retention: The goal of an ecosystem is to drive more value for customers. This is already seen via the effect on customer retention.  Customer retention is higher when partners are attached (and apps are involved).
