365 Days as a "Never thought I'd be an..." Entrepreneur!  (And yes, we're still going!)  10 lessons from year 1 in the trenches.

The past year has been an absolute dream—and sure, it's had it's challenges. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!  

Here’s my 10 lessons (that are relevant for your work even if you're not an entrepreneur): 👇

1️⃣ You never have to 'manufacture energy' toward work if you love what you do. 

2️⃣ When your family's on board, cheering you on... you're unstoppable! I couldn't have done this without them.

3️⃣ Find Accountability for your big projects—it drives results. Revenue went up 75% and 4 major initiatives conquered once I hired Commit Action.

4️⃣ Network! Even though people say "I know everyone", I'm not an expert at this, but it's been materially impactful this year. 

5️⃣ Interview Entrepreneurs. They're generous beyond belief. Leverage their energy and wisdom.

6️⃣ Post on LinkedIn.  You can build brand by giving away value here. It’s worth it.  It just takes longer than you think. Stay consistent. 

7️⃣ Take the risks. They’re scary. Some will pay off. Others won't.  But they teach you great lessons.  It's worth it!  

8️⃣ Celebrate the wins!  It adds joy to the journey.  When you conquer a major mark... do something to celebrate!  

9️⃣ Too many ideas = no progress. Focus on 3 near-term & 2 long-term projects. Oh, and ignore shiny objects!  

🔟 Let me save you THOUSANDS with this last one. Small steps toward big dreams can feel monumental. The overthinking can be paralyzing—so talk about it with someone. It creates natural accountability to "do the darn thing anyways."  It gets easier with time.  

365 days in, I’m still learning—but these lessons will made a huge difference in crushing year 2.

You shouldn’t care about Steve Jobs’ Presentation Style! But you SHOULD adopt this 1 thing he did REALLY well... 
 
The reason I don’t follow the trend and talk about Steve Jobs’ presentation style… is because it's not relevant to your everyday world! 
 
Steve Jobs’ presentations were designed to generate immense marketing buzz!  

That's not your world!  

You're just trying to excel and advance your career!
 
Yet, there's still 1 incredibly valuable thing you can learn from him… 
 
✅ Steve Jobs excelled at addressing the “SO WHAT” in his presentations. 
 
He didn't just list features; he explained WHY THEY MATTERED. 
 
When introducing the iPhone, he led with… 
 
“Today, we're going to reinvent the phone." 
 
And with it, he explained how EACH feature addressed common issues with existing phones… which emphasized the (at the time) "revolutionary multi-touch interface." 
 
So what’s the lesson for YOU? 
 
#1 Speak the Core Benefit to the End User: 
 
Explain how it will make your audience’s life easier… better… more efficient… more fulfilling. 
 
#2 Tell a Story that Connects: 
 
Make it real! Provide relatable examples that show real-world applications of your solution.  
 
#3 Address the “So What”: 
 
Always answer the question the audience is asking, “So what?” 
 
Make sure the audience understands WHY they should care!

3rd Annual Family Retreat in the books!
If you haven't done it with your family, it's so worth it. Here's the summary. 👇

An overnight retreat at a local Embassy Suites with my wife & 2 sons.  

Every year, the trip brings clarity to what's important to our FAMILY.

We do 3 key activities:

1. Reflect on last year's highlights.  

2. Reflect on what MOTIVATES us, how we LEVERAGE it and the OUTCOMES that tell us we're doing it right.

3. Goal set by ROLE for 2025.

2024 was a MONUMENTAL year as we took 3 "side hustles" to full-time.

To be my best I need to be:
- PRESENT
- INTENTIONAL
- PATIENT

If I wake up everyday and just do those 3 things... it seems like everything else falls into place.

I’ve done lots of “speaking coaching” and “interview coaching” over the last 6 years and conducted 30+ interviews in the business world.  

Always love when clients crush interviews and get offers.  

Bottom line: the best interviews are always great CONVERSATIONS. 

But not a random “how ya doin’”… but an intentional conversation with the elements I talk about in this video.  

I don’t mean to poke, but if you’ve had 10 or more interviews and no offers… this might be your problem.  

I’d be thrilled hearing you take this advice, crush your next interview and get that next job you want and don’t have to hire me or anyone else.

If you lead meetings... and you open by "sharing the agenda". 🤦‍♂️ You're not winning. There's a better way!  Here's 3 stupid easy things to do instead 👇

We've all been in COUNTLESS meetings where someone starts with "running through the agenda".  NOPE!

The problem with this is you're leaving out what you hope to ACCOMPLISH in the meeting.  

What makes this meeting a WIN?  
How does this meeting MOVE THE BALL?  
How do the attendees help ACCOMPLISH THE GOAL?

See, your attendees are asking... 
"What are we doing here?" and...
"Why am I here?!"  

If you want to have better, more engaged and more productive meetings this year, try this:

1:  Understand - what's the WIN of this meeting?  

And no... NOT the win for you!  What's the win for the ATTENDEES?

Then... design the meeting for THEIR benefit.  Sometimes that benefit is helping them connect to the bigger picture being accomplished by their engagement.

2:  In kicking off the meeting, start with a clear statement that shares that WIN with the ATTENDEES (and not the boring and mostly pointless agenda slide).

"Today we're going talk about ______________________ .  The real win is __________________."  

This kickoff statement anchors to a broader purpose.  

3:  If your attendees might question why they're there or how their contributions impact the outcome... tell them!  

Example:  "Your help is needed because you have expertise in ____________, and we want your input and contribution to (echo the win)."

For those of you thinking "but I just have a weekly routine meeting and it's always pretty meh".  

Yep, I get it.  You lack understanding and connecting to your purpose.  

So... next meeting, state it!  "The reason we do this is... (ex:) by sharing what's on your plate or your project updates, we can help support each other with insights and ideas and build better connection across our team."  

Then, about every 4th week... reiterate it.

There it is.

Do you ever get anxious in a meeting with new people and someone says "Let's go around and say one interesting thing about ourselves." 😨😱 

Then your heart starts pounding, your collar goes flaming hot...

Yeah, me too.  And I'm supposed to be the Confidence Coach!

If you're an overthinker (like me), you're thinking "say something funny!"

You're also thinking "don't look like an idiot!"

But every time it gets closer to your turn.... 

Your heart pounds faster!

If this is you, here's a helpful game plan:

FIRST:  BREATHE... inhale... exhale. 

SECOND:  when it gets to you, SHARE SOMETHING FACTUAL. 

Before you think... "Wait... that's not the assignment!"

Hold on a sec.

Here's what I'd say:

1.  I love soccer. Played goalkeeper most of my life.
2.  The Mountains are one of the most peaceful places to me.
3.  My first TWO cars were Saturn sedans.
4.  I worked at the '96 Olympics 
5.  I worked for Coca-Cola for 12 years.

Or this one, which I feel strange about... 

6.  I love helping businesses leverage their data to gain clarity AS WELL AS helping people grow their confidence and careers through better workplace speaking. 

Now to me... these are all facts.

But to you, they might just be interesting.

Whether these are "interesting" to you... I don't know. 

Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't.

But at least you know me better. :-)

And that was goal all along... for the room get to know you!

So remember... next time you're going around the circle, just share something FACTUAL.
