Peep this. This week I went to Spryng, a two-day event for marketers in Austin. 

The idea of going to an industry event probably makes your eyes glaze over as you think of the usual "perks":

-Windowless ballrooms
-Relentless pitch slaps
-Boring keynotes
-Crap food
-Too. Much. Free. Swag.

Peep Laja realized the current way sucks. 

It's played out and attendees don't wanna leave their house and sweat pants for a mediocre experience. 

So he created the first "unconference."

And it's not a 'better' event — it's a completely *different* event. 

One that people LOVED, raved about - aka ignited word of mouth, and made every attendee like and trust Peep and Wynter.

It ain't easy. It takes courage to be different.

But if you can pull it off, you don't just become the best — you become the only.

And that'll catapult your career and business.  

Here's my take on the Peep's New Way to run events:

I decided to go BIG for Chicago.

I rented out an entire basketball court to record the next 4 episodes of Reed Between The Lines.

We shot hoops and had candid conversations about creativity, marketing, and betting on yourself.

This is WILD. LinkedIn is for real becoming TikTok. 

I opened LinkedIn on my phone and saw the new "video" icon on the bottom. 

I tapped it, and it took me to a video-only feed. All short form, just like TikTok. 

Says it's in beta, but I'll bet it stays.

And when it does, it's another reason to invest in video content. (And hope I can get my Reed Between the Lines shorts on there ASAP).

Then I sat at the “Game day desk” with Anthony Kennada and Brianna Doe interviewing Colin Fleming, Natalie Marcotullio and Kaylee Edmondson talking about the growth of content creation.

And then I hosted a game show to wrap the day because… why not? 

This really is the new wave of industry events. 

5 star experience. Top shelf speakers. And phenomenal PEOPLE.  

Already looking forward to the next one 🤙🏼

Gotta give Peep credit. Spryng was BY FAR the coolest “work” event I’ve ever been to. 

It breaks all the rules. And we loved it. 

I got to meet dozens of cool and smart marketers, hang outside, and picked up new plays I’m actually excited to start using. 

Plus I presented my B2B influencer marketing playbook with Mark Huber. 

The biggest signal the event was a win: I can’t wait to go back next year.

A simple but powerful way to check if your content grabs attention:

I call it the Eyebrow Test 👀

When writing or editing content, I see if my eyebrows move.

No movement, then the content is flat. It's not ready. 

But if they dance 🕺🏻 then it's top shelf and ready to goooo.

How do you know tell your content is ready to publish?

My best advice if for new content marketers, or leaders starting to build their content engine:

You have two options if you're looking for growth:Optimize or build.

Optimizing requires testing new ideas

-New formats on social media 
-A/B testing in email marketing
-Different CTAs on digital events
-Restructuring your landing page layout

This is your fastest and easiest path to a quick win. 

Building on the other hand, means creating something new:

-Start a newsletter
-Launch a podcast
-Publish new research 
-Spin up a webinar series

This takes longer but has a much larger return. 

If you're getting started or need a quick win, optimize something for incremental growth. 

That'll buy you time — and trust — to build something new.

There was a woman wearing a raincoat hiking in New Zealand.

When it started to rain she thought she could trust her recently bought rain jacket from North Face to keep her dry. 

It didn’t. 

She got drenched. 

So she made a TikTok and tagged North Face letting them know and asking the clothing company for an ‘express delivery’ of an actual rain jacket.

What did North Face do?

They left the chat. 

Got in a helicopter and express delivered a rain jacket to her in New Zealand. 

That’s social media customer care at its finest.

You might not be able to charter a chopper. But you can:

1. Reply fast (show you listen)
2. Act rapidly  (show you respond)
3. Over-deliver (show you care)
