It's SQL.

To your employer, you're just a number. You're 1000% replaceable, and your company will replace you within days if needed. 

A few days after I quit my last job, I was on a call with my manager and the director discussing a project we were working on. At the end of the convo, my manager said to the director: "do you wanna stay for a sec so we can discuss the interview this afternoon?" And they promptly (and awkwardly) asked me to drop off the call. 

Only 3 days later and my role was getting filled. 

No goodbye pizza party. 
No virtual happy hour. 
No goodbye email. 

Just simply replaced in the blink of an eye within days, and business went on as usual. I'd given up my mental and physical health for that job. I'd given up a huge piece of who I was. I'd nearly missed several professional opportunities for that job due to optics and politics. Looking back now, I'm glad I didn't. 

I love my job now, but at the end of the day, it's a job. It's not who I am. It's not my whole identity. And I'm replaceable. 

And I feel at peace knowing that.

So take your PTO, spend time with loves ones, and do what's best for you because in some areas of your life, you're not replaceable.

When I hired a social media intern for my company, I did something crazy: I sent all the candidates the interview questions ahead of time!

Why? 

I wanted them to be their most confident selves and well-prepared for the interview. My goal isn't to stump them and trick them, my goal is to see how they think about and talk about some of my questions with a little bit of background info and time to think about it. 

If I ask them questions on the fly, I'm only seeing who's the best interviewer-- aka best bullshitter. And that doesn't do me any good when I want to see who can best apply their skills to my business problems. 

Well-prepared candidates interview better. Preparing candidates builds trust and shows them that you're willing to meet them halfway. Plus, an unexpected benefit is that I've been able to see who spent a little time (and a lot of time!) preparing and taking the interview seriously, and who didn't and just wanted to get lucky. 

All companies should send candidates interview questions beforehand.

The Data Analytics Interview: 

1. Recruiter round dodging questions about age, employment gaps, and how many kids you have.
2. Hiring manager interview being ambushed with technical questions, nonsensical riddles, and who's your favorite football team. 
3. Take home assignment requiring coding in SQL, Python, R, JavaScript, and Pascal and a PhD.
4. Live coding where you have to build a chatbot using LLMs in 20 minutes while answering live questions about your method. 
5. Panel interview with stakeholders, teammates, and the CEO's son. 
6. Offer for $30K/year with 2 weeks of PTO, 1 sick day, and 0% 401K match.

The job: 
1. Updating 3 cells in Excel per day

A lot of people wonder how I have a 9-5 job and run a 6-figure business on social media. 

The truth? 

It’s HARD. I am BUSY. And yes, I work early mornings, late evenings, and even weekends. It’s an absolute grind. But I love it. 

Working on my business (BDE⚡️) feels like more of a passion or a hobby than it does work. It’s fun for me and it’s very rewarding, so I don’t mind posting up at all brewery on a Saturday to get some work done!

(A few weeks ago, I was telling my bartender all about SQL… and yes I was the only girl who brought her laptop to the bar 😂)

Working a lot is a sacrifice that I have to (and am willing to) make in order to be successful at 2 things (corporate + entrepreneurship). Sometimes it sucks waking up at 6am and working until 11pm at night, but I know it’s what I have to do to get all my work done! 

Of course I do set boundaries and plan fun time (and vacation) ahead of time so I don’t get burnt out. Just because I love working doesn’t mean I don’t need a break. 

Anyone else out here working on Saturday??

The truth about remote work? It can be lonely. 

I miss seeing my coworkers and hanging out. I miss talking face to face in groups without having to unmute and accidentally speak over others. 

I miss the connection of being in person and getting to see others’ wedding pictures and talk on a deeper level. 

But I wouldn’t give up the freedom of remote work to go back to an office. Or relocate to SF from GA! 

It’s a really tough trade off because in person connection is real and fun, but remote work makes it much easier to balance your life and stay happy and healthy. 

This week, I was in California for the Crunchbase offsite. I maximized every minute by staying out until 2am every night hanging out with coworkers and waking up at 6am everyday because of jet lag. I am exhausted (and now currently sick with a sore throat), but my social battery is recharged and I’m happy. 

Even if you work remotely, it’s SO IMPORTANT to meet up with others at least a few times a year. It makes all the difference. 

It makes remote work possible.

I'm in my 20s, and I absolutely don't have my life figured out. 

My life probably looks really fun and great on social media (and it is for the most part, not complaining!) But what you don't see, is what happens behind the scenes. (Because that's boring and no one wants to see that on social media)

My mental health has struggled more in 2024 than any other year. I've struggled with general anxiety for years, but this year has been a big tipping point due to work changes and economic pressure. The year started with me finally deciding to try medication (lexapro) so I could feel "normal" and "like everyone else".

5 months in and 17lb later, I came to the realization that lexapro was slowly killing my physically. Mentally, it made me a robot with no emotions (but highly productive!) 

Getting off was even worse than getting on. 

I was sick for about 4-6 weeks with horrible headaches, major fatigue and brain zaps, and an overall feeling of being unwell. Working during that time was unbearable, but I did it! At the time, my social media looked fun and great-- I was in Ireland having an amazing time! 

Now I finally feel like I'm getting my life back, feeling more like myself, and finding joy again. I truly feel like I'm on the right path going forward, but it's been a really long journey.

You never know what someone's going through from their social media. 

I'll never forget those who loved me and were understanding during that 8-month period.

And I definitely won't forget those who weren't.

The first time I posted and LinkedIn and sent something into the abyss, I never expected it to change my life. Not trying to be dramatic or anything but it actually did change my life.

Not only have I met so many amazing people and friends, but I’ve also grown confidence in myself as a business professional. LinkedIn has helped me become more plugged into the community and network with so many amazing people.

I’ve also been able to make my own courses, share my knowledge, and grow side income outside of a 9-5. We all know in this economy, having a side gig is EVERYTHING for financial stability. 

I’ve had crazy opportunities traveling the world to make content, partnering with top brands like IBM, Intel, and Lyft (coming soon!), and being featured by top publications like BBC and The Washington Post.

Stop overcomplicating getting a job in data. 

1. Learn the skills well 
2. Show you know them well (hi portfolio!)
3. Network and get visibility on LinkedIn

How to be ✨ demure & mindful ✨ as a data analyst:

❌ long gibberish queries without code comments  
✅ long gibberish queries WITH code comments 

❌ 400 nested subqueries per query
✅ 400 CTEs instead of subqueries

❌ Not exporting dashboards to Excel
✅ Exporting dashbaords to Excel with a smile & a yes ma'am/sir

The details go a long way in corporate politics. Don't be the person no one likes. Be ✨ demure & mindful ✨

Knowing select * from table isn’t enough as a data analyst. 

The hard part of learning SQL isn’t the actual “learning SQL” part. It’s learning about how different tables are related in a database and how they make up the entire data model. One wrong move and you can end up with a bunch of nulls, a bunch of duplicates, or even hidden issues you can’t see in your query outputs. 

Talking about Dim & Fact tables is easiest by comparing them: 
✨ Dim tables contain descriptive data and fact tables contain quantitative data. ✨ Dimension tables are tables that contain unique values whereas fact tables are tables that contain allll of the data. 
✨ Dimension Tables are used to filter, describe, and add context to fact tables. ✨ Dimension tables are usually smaller, while fact tables are usually larger. 
✨ Fact tables generally have columns that serve as foreign keys and link to (or join to) the primary keys of the dimension tables. 

Fact Table Examples: 
1. Orders 
2. Subscriptions 
3. Event Log 
4. Status Log 
5. Web Traffic 

Dim Table Examples: 
1. Product 
2. Customer 
3. Users 
4. Event Definitions 
5. Employee

If you wanna be a good data analyst, I highly recommend you learn about data modeling too— don’t just leave it for the data engineers 😉

I've started shamelessly putting my weekly therapy appointments in my work calendar because there's nothing to be ashamed of. 

I used to put "appointment" or a generic blank calendar meeting to discreetly make sure I had the time blocked off because I felt weird putting my therapy appointment somewhere so public. But it's 2024-- we don't have to be embarrassed about our mental health anymore. 

And to be completely honest, one time I missed a therapy appointment because I was heads down working and completely forgot about it. Since then, I've decided to always put it in my work calendar so I NEVER miss another one.

Therapy has become one of my top priorities this year due to the severe pressure I've been under and the impact it has had on my mental health. The last few months have been rough adjusting to my "regular" brain after weaning off 6 months of lexapro (which left me with headaches, confusion, and lightheadedness for a couple of months as I tapered it).

Lexapro made me an emotionless (but highly-productive!) robot. Now I'm having to learn how to be an emotional and anxious Jess. And somehow still be productive & show up at 100% for everyone?! On the bright side, my severe anxiety is making me lose my lexapro weight (jk I'm toxic and cope with humor😜) 

Mental Health is no joke. 

Be kind to people because you never know what they're going through even if they seem fine. We're all out here trying to survive.

Happy Monday! Interrupting my usual Data Analytics/Career content because I'm in Jury Duty today. It's my first time having jury duty, and I still don't even feel like a real adult yet. 

Hearing people go around the room asking to be excused/dismissed to pick up kids from school, take care of disabled loved ones, and finish PhD presentations made me realize how truly blessed I am to be available.

No one wants the inconvenience of jury duty (especially at 8am on a Monday), but since I'm fully able to serve, I'm going in with the right attitude-- willingness.  I'm blessed to have a flexible job where I can still be paid (unlike hourly workers) and to not have any serious responsibilities (like being a caretaker).

Jury Duty is our civic duty, but it hurts low income/hourly workers the most. I couldn't imagine having to take off work and not be paid for a whole day (or even a whole week) to fulfill a legal obligation. So in a weird way, I genuinely hope I'm chosen for the jury if it alleviates that burden off someone else. 

BTW if you're wondering, there's no coffee or lunch in the courtroom, and they made me turn off my phone and laptop. It's not a 5 star resort unfortunately 🤣

I sure am glad I dressed comfy though. I'm at least going to judge in comfortable style 💅

When interviewing for jobs, you have to remember to interview them just as much as they're interviewing you!

Here's 5 company red flags and their translations: 

1. We are a family. 
Translation ➡️ They won't respect your boundaries and you'll constantly be guilted. 

2. Do more with less.
Translation ➡️ They expect more work for no extra pay or resources. 

3. We wear many hats here, and there's room for lateral growth.
Translation ➡️ You'll be expected to do a lot of jobs that aren't yours and likely not advance forward in your career. 

4. We have unlimited PTO. (disclaimer: depends on company culture!)
Translation ➡️ Everyone feels so guilty asking for time off so they don't.

5. We thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Translation ➡️ Priorities and goals are always changing so you'll never actually get anything done.
