As a team, we cleaned, transformed, and engineered a very messy dataset from a non-profit organization. Then we developed a k-means cluster algorithm to identify significant clusters from their donor base. 

I was solely responsible for developing personas for each cluster based on their historical behavior, demographics, and characteristics and then telling a story with each persona in a way where the non-profit could understand their donors and take action to increase donations.

5 years ago you could get a job in data by just knowing a little bit of Excel and then just learn SQL on the job. 

10 years ago you could get a job in data by saying "I love data" and being a real human being.

In 2024, things have changed. Not only has there been a large increase in the number of data jobs, there's been an even bigger increase in the number of people moving into data careers. 

The desire to have a remote, high-paying job that you can learn on your own without years of schooling has greatly increased for many people of all ages. And don't forget the fact that social media has had a large influence on glorifying the field by presenting it as easy to break into, high-paying right off the bat, and minimal stress and work on the job.

The reality is that data is no longer an easy field to break into because everyone wants it and the biggest demand for talent is in the mid/senior level roles-- which you need multiple years of experience for. Entry-level roles are super competitive due to the saturation of the job market. These roles aren't in as much demand by companies, but they're in huge demand on the job market-- leaving many candidates frustrated by the intense competition. 

So how will you stand out? 

I recommend slowing down your job search, focusing on the basics, and take you skills to another level. Your quick course and projects might not be enough in this market, and that's okay. Take a few more months to practice and learn the information more deeply, and you'll become a completely different candidate on the job market. 

This job market is all about being strategic, so don't rush your job search. Focus on learning, building, and making connections. It's okay if it takes 6-12 months. Breaking into data isn't a "get rich quick scheme", so take your time and don't rush it. Focus on the long game.

GOOD people leave BAD work situations. And that doesn’t make them a bad person. 

Leaving a job before the one year mark used to be shameful, but I think a lot of people can relate to being in that position. Sometimes things aren’t a good fit and aren’t what you thought they’d be coming in, and that’s okay.

People leave:

❗️Roles that don’t align with the job description. 
❗️Lack of training, onboarding, and support.
❗️Bullying, belittling, and gaslighting. 
❗️Micromanagers and lack of trust.
❗️Controlling PTO restrictions.

Everyone deserves to work somewhere where they feel comfortable, respected, and valued! No one should ever feel like they are on trial or have a ball of anxiety in their stomach 24/7. 

No job is worth it. 

Sometimes you have to do what’s best for your mental health, and that’s ok. 

I’m very happy that society is rejecting toxic work cultures, and I can’t wait to see the workforce continue to transform. 

If you’ve quickly quit a job, I don’t judge you. 

I've done it too, and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself.

The Data Analytics Interview: 

1. Recruiter round dodging questions about age, employment gaps, and how many kids you have.
2. Hiring manager interview being ambushed with technical questions, nonsensical riddles, and who's your favorite football team. 
3. Take home assignment requiring coding in SQL, Python, R, JavaScript, and Pascal and a PhD.
4. Live coding where you have to build a chatbot using LLMs in 20 minutes while answering live questions about your method. 
5. Panel interview with stakeholders, teammates, and the CEO's son. 
6. Offer for $30K/year with 2 weeks of PTO, 1 sick day, and 0% 401K match.

The job: 
1. Updating 3 cells in Excel per day

It’s my birthday 🥳 and holy guacamole— if you showed 20 year old (or even 25 year old!) Jess where I’m at now, I wouldn’t believe you. 

Even though I’m still filled with imposter syndrome daily, I’m really proud of all I’ve accomplished:

- working as a senior data analyst in tech at a cool well-known startup 
- growing a 6-figure brand focusing on data, content, and courses
- becoming a LinkedIn learning instructor 
- working with top data brands like IBM, Intel, SAP, Alteryx, and more (all inbound)
- the people who I’ve impacted to land data jobs and inspired along the way!

A lot of people see growing older as a bad thing. Everyone fears getting older. 

But I don’t. I love becoming more mature, more experienced, and more confident. Which is why I’m even more excited for the next year to come! After seeing what I accomplished this year, I know next year will be even better!

Don't get swayed with learning all of the obscure functions and techniques when the bread and butter of SQL is what's you'll use most of the time. If you have a good understanding of the basics (and intermediate stuff!), you'll easily be able to pick up the advanced techniques and niche functions later on. Those things are always just a quick Google or ChatGPT away.

The bread and butter are what you'll be interviewed on and what will solve most business problems. Plus, these are the things that will work in anyyy SQL dialect, so they're even more worth investing in for your career.

You can't get started in Data Science and Analytics until you have an IDE to practice coding on your own!

Finding an IDE that works with your coding language, computer, and goals can be a little tricky...

Here's all the IDEs I've used in my career (at work and for fun):

What are your favorite IDEs to use for each coding language? Lately I've been HOOKED on data science notebooks because I can switch from SQL and Python seamlessly.

I don't actually think AI is all that helpful for writing SQL queries. 

Yes, ChatGPT is super fast and can beat out anyone in a SQL-writing race, but is your main goal: quality or quantity?

ChatGPT is a machine not a human, so it's incapable of understanding the exact scenario you give it. It can't see the whole data model and understand the relationships and dependencies between tables. It also most certainly can't understand business logic and how to apply it to the data. Plus... how will ChatGPT handle all these stakeholders?! Impossible.

Sometimes when using ChatGPT for fun, I find that it's actually harder to figure out how to type the right prompt EXACTLY to produce what you need. Plus, it usually ends up making some mistakes and completing certain tasks in a weird, convoluted way. 

Because of this, I very rarely use ChatGPT for writing SQL. I only use it for syntax or when I need some inspiration to get my brain juices (ew!) flowing. ChatGPT is a great launching pad for starting projects, but I absolutely don't trust it more than I trust myself. 

And this is why I sleep well at night (with melatonin, of course) knowing that my job is safe and AI will not replace me. Many trolls online like to tell me that AI can do my job, and I just laugh. Because anyone who can actually do my job knows that AI can't...

I'm still waiting for ChatGPT to replace me so I can stay home and play Crash Bandicoot all day.

I’m a Senior Data Analyst in tech who somehow grew a 6-figure content business with an employee in 8 months 🤯 

As a new entrepreneur, I’ve had to learn some quick lessons hard and fast:

1. Always have a contract (this was a $750 lesson unfortunately)
2. It’s better to say no than to accept less than you’re worth 
3. Plan out your goals for every week and day to maximize productivity 

The 3rd lesson has been most important to me recently because my schedule has been super chaotic. It’s not easy balancing everything I do, especially with all of the different meetings and changing priorities I have.

I recently used a visual work platform called Mural to plan out my week’s goals day by day to make sure I got everything done I needed to. I was even able to share it with my intern so she could add in her daily goals as well!

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret that has helped me be a million times more successful: spending just a few minutes scheduling & planning out your week ahead of time can give you back HOURS of productivity. Plus, it’ll help you not miss important meetings like therapy!

Now THIS is what I call marketing!

Thank you Chewy for sending my (ungrateful) ugly rat chihuahua a HANDWRITTEN birthday card. I promise he doesn't deserve it, but I'm going to break down why this is a genius marketing move ⬇️

1. In the age of millions of emails and lots of quick, virtual touch points, a handwritten piece of snail mail is a great way to stand out among all of the noise. It actually made me stop, look, and think. Who can resist a sweet card for their sweet little angel?! As a Zillennial without any children, my pets are my actual life, so this kind gesture means a ton and stands out to me. 

2. The brand loyalty they are building is crazy. Not only did they appeal to my ethos and love for my pets, they also sent me a 20% off coupon (which is well-deserved for me because I spend literally thousands a year at Chewy for my 4 pets!). I get so tired of brands that take your money and never give you anything back. With frequent coupon rewards and cute cards, they have my loyalty for life. 

3. The social impact of this gesture will be immense because pet owners talk. We want high-quality, affordable, and easy pet supplies. I will definitely be sharing this amazing experience and coupon with all my pet owner friends (and on social media) which further builds their brand recognition and and trust with consumers. 

My annoying chihuahua will probably live to be at least like 35, so I'm really happy to see this amazing customer experience at Chewy, and I hope to be a customer for a long time.
