I was promoted to breakfast show host in 2005, but decided to leave the station after just a few months due to my disappointment with station management when I became aware of their unethical practices.

It also marks the moment I technically 'invented' the 'podcast' in the UK, by uploading a full hour of the best bits of my show to my DJ page on the website.

I spent 48 hours in LinkedIn jail.

Ok, putting aside the fact that having people share your episodes is not real ROI for a moment...

You're delusional if you think people on LinkedIn are going to help you promote your content as if it's their own. 

Have you SEEN how selfishly people on this platform are when it comes to  attention?

Nobody will care about your podcast just because you want them to.

Whether you've 50k followers or 50 followers, you're facing exactly the same challenge.

Convincing someone that your podcast is worth spending time listening to.

And if your market research on this has been a post saying "I'm thinking of starting a podcast. Would you listen to it?"... 

Look, I get it, you beamed with joy because thousands of people liked your post and you even got some supportive comments....

Time for a reality check.

Different types of social engagement come at different price points.

Let's equate the value of engagement. 

Divide the amount of real world ROI the action can deliver you, by the amount of effort it takes to take the action.

Then you end up with something like this.

Clicking like on a LinkedIn post = $0
Leaving a comment on a LinkedIn post = $0
Clicking play on a podcast episode you're familiar with = $10
Clicking play on a podcast episode you're unfamiliar with = $50
Sharing your podcast episode post on social media = $100
Sharing your podcast episode on dark social = $500
Referring your podcast to an ideal listener = $1000

So as you can see, a supportive like on a post about you *thinking* of starting a podcast doesn't mean they're gonna listen. 

They most likely won't.

Podcast awareness is now sky high and a third of us are listening to them regularly. 

Three-quarters of us are podcast-curious. 

But let's be honest, the world doesn't need any more snooze-inducing business podcasts.

So here I'm going to give it to you straight. 

And it might be upsetting for you to read this.  

Going cheap on your podcast production is a fast track to zero ROI.

I wonder if you're smart like Jason? 
Here's what I mean.

Jason reached out because he'd seen my stuff on here. 

He's also heard my podcast, and realised he liked my no-BS approach.

He's in charge of a small team at a surveying firm who want to use a podcast for marketing to new customers as well as ensuring existing ones are kept up to speed with all the new shiz they're working on.

What do all DIY solopreneur podcasters have in common?
They're pissing money away because they've convinced themselves they're saving cash by doing it themselves. But they ain't. I'll show you the math.

You know those 'professional podcast promoters'? The ones who offer to 'promote' your podcast and get it in the 'charts'? Avoid them like you'd avoid volunteering to go on stage during a snake-charmer performance.

You're not gonna get the results you're hoping for if you work with one of these people that infest your DMs.

They're scammers.

You know the whole 'if it sounds too good to be true' thing?

Massively applicable here.

Sure, paying some sinister person from the Middle East 50 dollars for 'fame' and 'success' thanks to your podcast being 'exposed to millions of ideal listeners around the world' might sound like a good idea. 

But it isn't. 

Because it's totally untrue.

These people use click farms in places like Bangladesh and The Philippines to trigger mass artificially downloads of your podcast episodes.

In case you don't know, click farms are little offices with sometimes hundreds of iPhones and other devices lined up in a row.

When you pay these people, it's someone's job to search your podcast on these devices, one by one, and click follow on your podcast. 
They also play your episodes on auto.

The more you pay them, the more devices they do this with.

And it'll trigger the algorithm to push your podcast into one of the sub category charts that nobody ever sees, other than your fellow podcasters.

They'll then excitedly share a screen grab of this chart ranking with you.

Meanwhile, literally nobody other than them and their bank account will benefit from this artificial 'chart' ranking in any way.

Sure, you can post a screengrab of it on your social media like it's somehow an achievement to reach number 27 in 'Home & Garden'.

But all that results in is this:

Your social media followers slow-clap you, because this isn't a public-facing win.

Apple Podcasts see you cheating the system because your podcast's current ranking is 'unusual'

People like me who know what you're doing when you post about it massively judge you (Hi Dodge! Hi Steven!)

Your podcast stays where it is for maybe a day or two, before it disappears never to be seen again

Your 'professional promoter' threatens to leave you with negative reviews if you don't give them another $50 to do the work again

An epic thing about working with a clued up podcast manager? No worries about 'ya don't know what ya don't know' things. Here's one of those. 
Yaknow, in case you're podcast manager's less... well, yaknow...

Google Podcasts is sunsetting next week.

This is because their big bosses in the other building want everyone to move over to the YouTube Music app.

Much like with everything Google does, they've put next to no effort into informing everyone, or even making it easy for users of the app to migrate.

They're literally like, "yeah, we're gonna switch this off cuz. Soz".

So it's down to you to tell your listeners that are using that app, that they'll need to find another one in order to listen to your brand's podcasty messaging.

I mean, it's highly unlikely you'll have many listeners using that app, but even so, you don't want to lose the handful that do, do ya?

Any one of them could be almost ready to work with you, but need to figure a few things out first.

If you're one of those tightwad people that signed up for a free hosting account with Anchor or Spotify, you're pretty screwed. 

Sorry, not sorry.

If on the other hand you've used a fit-for-purpose hosting platform, you could record a quick and dirty pre-roll informing them of the need for action.

You're on LinkedIn, so I'm guessing you want attention and to grow your business. Now if you're following the standard advice from gurus on here, what does that look like for your average day? Let me take a guess. 

Getting up super early and spending ALL of your morning commenting on everyone's posts. 
Well, you NEED to get attention and engagement, right?
After all, followers equals leads, yes? 
It's all about the conversions baby!

Scratching your head trying to think of something compelling and genuinely informative to post at exactly 9am. 
You'd have prepped something ahead of time, but you've wasted 4 hours this week so far just commenting for attention.

Constantly checking your notifications to see if you've had any comments. Not just likes, but actual comments. Because that means more!
Then, refreshing the actual post because you're worried the notifications are janked again.

Spend the next hour watching guru video after guru video from engagement-pod-using influencers who are trying to convince you that they have this all figured out. 
And their engagement is down to some kind of skill, rather than fake amplification. HAHAHHAHA!

Get on yet another call with a bad fit prospect who came in as a cold lead from a DM you got from someone who clearly hadn't even looked at your profile page, but felt the need to fill their time with another virtual coffee.

Decide you're going to get on top of this. You're going to get proactive with LinkedIn live, live audio rooms and newsletters. 
Yes, that will fix everything. LinkedIn LOVES promoting people who use their things, right?

Wonder why the hell only 9 people showed up for your live, and how in the name of Jesus' toenails you can repurpose that for an on-demand audience who might show it more love.
That's if you can ever find it again!

Feel totally dismayed when you read a post like this one, telling you you're falling into the trap of serving the platform, rather than having the platform serve you.

Want to know how you can fix all this?

I call it 'podcast-first' content marketing.

But you'll probably end up calling it 'a lifesaver'.

Or, 'that thing that means I no longer have to wake up at 6am each day to juice one platform's algorithm'.

AI thinks this is what Princess Diana would look like in 2024 if she'd lived.
Do you want your podcast episodes to be the audio content equivalent of a terribly inaccurate 'Diana-aged' pic? I didn't think so. In which case...

Stop using one-click AI clean up tools like Descript Studio Sound and Adobe Podcast. 

Or if you must, at least run the resulting audio along with your original audio in a multitrack editor so you can swap between them easily.

Contrary to popular belief, these tools don't actually 'clean up' anything.

They work by artificially recreating the audio that was there before, as if it didn't have any background sound.

And they ALWAYS get it wrong.

Often they ditch entire sentences or cut the ends off of words.

I'm yet to hear any AI edited content that sounds better than audio that's been properly recorded and engineered using professional tools.

By all means cut time and have these 'lazy' tools handle your content for you. But understand they're going to ultimately cost you more time in growing an audience that actually enjoys hearing what you're putting out there.
