Led Google's Messages & Rich Communication Services (RCS) team - Android’s equivalent to iMessage.  RCS brings rich messaging to 1B+ Android Messages users across the globe.  Managed a team of product managers and led a 300+ person org with a $xxxM annual budget.

Previously, built Google's OTT Comms growth organization from the ground up.  Drove product strategy for user retention & acquisition, experimentation frameworks, and growth analytics.  Mentored other teams within Google on establishing growth teams.

Worked on Yahoo's next-generation Search Advertising Platform as a member of the Project Panama Team. Responsible for key backend components (e.g. editorial & geo-targeting systems). Led initiatives to streamline common development processes and improve poorly designed components; received recognition of accomplishments within 6 months of joining the team.

Oracle Corporation

Worked with the iStore group to provide B2B and B2C e-commerce solutions. Led a high-visibility, high-impact project within 3 months of joining the team. Also worked with the DataGuard group to provide disaster recovery solutions for Oracle databases.

Zaplet, Inc.

Built consumer and enterprise software at a venture-backed software company.  Designed and implemented integral components of the Zaplet enterprise platform using Java, JSP, Enterprise Java Beans, and XML.  Scaled various processes as the business grew (e.g. new-hire training, documentation & coding standards, etc.).

Why is it so hard to make the leap from PM → Product Leader?

Hard Truth #1:
Opportunities for advancement in product management are scarce. Product teams are typically smaller, and when leadership roles open, the competition is fierce. You need to be primed and ready for when your chance comes.

Hard Truth #2:
The skills that make you a stellar PM won't necessarily make you a stellar Product Leader. Leading 100 people isn't the same as leading 10; it requires a significant evolution of your skill set.

I struggled to demonstrate Product Leadership at Google. 
 
I had a vision, a strategy, a plan. I had all the things. 
 
But I was doing a poor job of communicating my thinking. 
 
I made the same mistakes many Product Managers make: 
 
👉🏽 I relied on a roadmap to display my product thinking 
 
A roadmap tells you when to build what. But it lacks context. It doesn’t tell you why. It doesn’t convey the bigger picture. 
 
👉🏽 I created 1-pagers with plans for the year 
 
While this is useful for the current year, it didn’t connect the dots in the long term. It only showed short-term thinking. 
 
👉🏽 I assumed my thinking would spread organically 
 
Turns out, this rarely happens. People get different levels of information from conversations. Often, they forget most of what they heard anyway.

But - I found a way out and upwards! 
 
During my time at Google, I created a template - to show my product thinking - that I used over the years. 
 
I called it a Product Blueprint. 
 
It helped me establish myself as a leader and prove that I was thinking deeply and widely about the product I was working on. 
 
It culminated in me being asked to lead an org of over 300 people. 
 
Yesterday, I shared my template with my newsletter subscribers.

Don’t be afraid of information overload. 
 
As you grow from PM → Product Leader, information overload is going to happen.  
 
My advice - start with the assumption that you will miss information. 
 
Your mindset will shift from: 
 
"How do I stay on top of all the information?" 
 
→ "How do I ensure I see 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 information?".  
 
 
👉🏽 It changes your approach to solving the problem. To scale, you need to figure out how to extract the signal from the noise.

Shared experiences and mutual support help teams withstand long-term challenges. 
 
And long-term resilience is the foundation for high-performing teams. 
 
How do you foster this sense of community? 
 
Just saying “we’re in this together” is not enough. Community needs to be felt, viscerally. 
 
Plan a team event solely focused on team building and fun. Then make it a regular thing. 
 
One of the teams I ran at Google had over 70 members spread out across the globe. Yet every year, without fail, we got together for an event. It wasn’t a coincidence that this team was one of the strongest in the group. 
 
Prioritize community, and watch your team thrive.

Ever join a new company, only to discover you made a horrible mistake? 

👇🏽 
 
Early in my career, I moved across the country to join a startup with a seemingly great vision. 
 
But within weeks, I realized the culture was a nightmare. Micromanagement, distrust – it was the opposite of empowering. 
 
I finally left after a few months. 
 
I had just uprooted my entire family for this opportunity and now was without a job. The guilt I felt was real. Leaving felt like defeat. 
 
How would I avoid making another mistake like this? How could I make sure this didn’t happen again? 
 
 
Fortunately, I took time to reflect on what went wrong. 
 
Leaving was a setback, but it gave me a powerful awareness of how crucial company culture is to team success. 

 
In my next role, I prioritized building a great culture. 

Team culture and psychological safety became my top priority. 
 
My team thrived, and my career took off. 

And it led to some of my greatest successes. 
 
I’ve carried the lesson I learned into every job since: 
 
👉🏽 In the dogged pursuit of golden eggs (wins), leaders cannot forget to take care of the health of their golden goose (the team).

Setbacks often bring clarity. 
 
They can illuminate blind spots and offer valuable insights. 
 
This newfound awareness may just be the key to success next time around.

Product Managers often make the mistake of driving change by painting a rosy picture of the future. 
 
“𝘐𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘸𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘟, 𝘠, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘡 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴!” 
 
The problem with this approach is that it makes an assumption. Here is the same sentence, but with the assumption made clear: 
 
“𝘐𝘧 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘱𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙, 𝘸𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘟, 𝘠, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘡 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴!” 
 
This assumption is the source of hesitation by teams to adopt new processes. 
 
Asking teams to fully commit to an unproven process risks serious disruption to their workflows if things go wrong. 
 
And without team buy-in from the start, the new process is almost certain to fail. 
 
 
👉🏽 The next time you introduce a change, be ready to explain Plan B.

Post-mortems are one way. But they're a heavyweight process. Often, only the big setbacks get attention. 
 
Insights that might be gleaned from smaller setbacks are lost, and add up over time to a significant missed opportunity.
