5 nights in Disney World and 2 roundtrip plane tickets for $340?

It's not too good to be true. It's travel hacking.

Here's how breaking Dave Ramsey's golden rule helps me live life to the fullest:

Credit card companies will give you welcome bonuses after spending a certain amount of money.

They do this because they believe you will overspend.

Then, they can profit from transaction fees.

Or, much worse, you don't pay your balance in full, and they profit off of you by charging you interest.

I have never paid a dime of credit card interest.

(Okay maybe once in college, I won't lie...)

But since I've been a *responsible* adult, I haven't.

So I take advantage of these companies every year. 😈 

This year's strategy:

1. I put my recurring biz expenses of ~$4k/mo on a CC.

I opened the Amex Marriott Business card.

This card awarded me 3 free nights at qualifying hotels.

I picked the Gaylord Palms Resort at ~$550/night for free, and I only had to cover the $155 resort fee. ($1,650 saved)

2. I pay my taxes quarterly using a CC.

The IRS will let you pay your taxes by credit card but charge you a 1.87% fee.

I opened the Amex Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card.

This card awarded me 85,000 Delta Miles.

We'll be flying from JFK to MCO roundtrip for free and $1,050 saved.

3. Look into additional CC perks.

The Delta card also has a $150 hotel credit. For our 4th and 5th nights in Orlando, we booked at a Holiday Inn near Disney for $340 and saved $150 on this.

All in all...

We're headed to Disney World in 2025 for a whopping $340 with ~$2,800 saved.

We'll spend money while we're there.

But the bulk of it came for free from spending on necessary expenses!

Things like this will not make you rich.

But who doesn't want an extra vacation?

This is just as important to my financial plan as my investment strategy is.

Don't overlook travel hacking!

You won't believe what happened yesterday...

My fiancée dropped her engagement ring down the sink drain.

The odds of that have got to be less than 1%.
But guess what? I still had insurance on the ring.

Fortunately, we managed to fish it out. 

Even if we hadn’t, there was no stress. 
The risk was transferred to the insurance company.

Look, insurance is like a safety net.

It’s about transferring risk, not making a profit.

I made more money than ever in 2021.

I was obsessed with investing in the stock market.

Every extra dollar went toward it.

I spent my free time looking for an edge in a little-known investment.

I made some good ones. I also made some bad ones.

But I made no investments in LIFE.

And in 2022, I burned out.

I knew from then on that something needed to change.

Here's what did:

1. I delegated my stock investments to a money manager.

I’m a financial planner, not a portfolio manager.

Yes, we help our clients invest in stocks, but we aren’t the people behind the trading charts every day.

Having this off my plate has given me solid returns and less stress.

2. I bought cash-flow-based investments.
 
I got my first rental property in early 2023. 

I could benefit in 2 ways from it:

→ Appreciation of the property
→ Monthly rental income

In my 2nd year owning it, it has profited ~$1,350/month. 

This pays me today but will also pay me in the future as a piece of my retirement.

3. I factor travel into my cash flow every year.

We take 4+ trips every single year.

These aren’t purely ‘costs.’

They are investments in life.

Not only that, travel expands my mind and brings me fresh ideas.

The key is that I have a spend number that I STICK to.

So...

The lesson here?

ROI is important, but ROL can be life-changing.

Financial success should enable you to live a fuller, more meaningful life. 

Can you really quantify the return on…

→ Going on a Safari in San Diego?
→ A beach day on Coronado Island with my fiance?
→ Seeing the Sea Lions and a rooftop dinner in La Jolla?
→ Experiencing a game-winning hit that my friend caught?
→ Watching a fireworks show on the field at the #1 MLB ballpark?
→ Getting to hold parrots on our arms? (had to throw this in haha)

I don’t know.

What I do know is they make me happy.

Do what makes YOU happy.

Not just what increases your investment returns.

This is not just financial planning.

This is life planning.

Can't you see that YOU are the problem?

Will you just stop and recognize something?

I believe we live in the greatest country in the world:

→ The United States of America.

This is no knock to any other country.

But where else in the world is there:

→ The freedom to speak your mind without fear?
→ The ability to vote for our leaders and make your voice heard?
→ The opportunity to chase your dreams, no matter your background?
→ A melting pot of cultures, ideas, and innovations that shape the future?

On this 4th of July, I am grateful for the freedoms and opportunities that America provides.

I am thankful for:

→ The men & women who have fought & continue to fight for our freedoms.
→ The entrepreneurs and innovators who push boundaries and drive progress.
→ The community and diversity that makes us stronger and more resilient.

As we celebrate Independence Day, remember the importance of UNITY.

STOP letting the media push you against your neighbor.

Your environment will change you.

But you choose how it changes you.

The airport can stress you out.
The airport can waste your time.
The airport can be your office.

I always get to my flight 2-3 hours early.

I have no stress about traveling.
I waste no time when I’m on the move.
I get a full day of work done in that time.

Yesterday we flew back from LA to NY.

My airport shift:

→ Began a client’s plan centered around a private market investment.
→ Helped a client secure a 0% CC to help finance his new house as a buffer for big expenses.
→ Assisted a client with the ownership of shares of a business stock he owns from a formerly private company that has now gone public.
→ Coordinated 2 clients with a realtor connection of mine for 2 pieces of international real estate they are viewing in late July.
→ Helped a few clients secure life, health & disability insurances with the proper professionals and our team.

And some other small things in between.

My clients count on me every week.

Yes, I take vacations like this one.

But the reality is that some things CAN’T wait.

Don’t fall victim to your environment.

Here are some tips to stay productive when traveling:

1. Plan ahead:

Create a list of tasks you can accomplish while on the move. 

Prioritize them based on urgency and importance.

I use the Eisenhower Matrix to help filter these.

2. Leverage technology:

Use apps and tools that allow you to work efficiently from anywhere. 

Notion, Asana, and iPhone notes are my best friends.

3. Invest in a good bag:   

I got my bag from Bopai. It has tons of space so I can take everything I need with me.

(Better yet it looks great)

Use the airport to make the most out of your travel time.

Don’t let your environment dictate your productivity.

Stay on top of your game, no matter where you are.

P.S. Do you work in the airport?

You aren't growing here because you're focusing on followers.

→ The value is not in vanity metrics.
→ The value is in collaboration.

Create real relationships, not just "followers."

Reminder:

It’s called SOCIAL media.

It is as good or bad as you make it.

Use it for good.

There are amazing relationships waiting to be made.

→ Build connections.
→ Engage meaningfully.
→ Turn followers into friends.

You're still swinging for the fences?

Stop going for the long ball and start playing the long game.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to a Red Sox game.

Rafael Devers is their star player.

In his first at-bat that day, he hit a home run right over the Green Monster behind us.

Make no mistake, however... 

He isn't a star because he hits 60 home runs.

He's a star because he consistently gets on base and takes advantage of a "home run pitch" when it presents itself.

Baseball, much like investing, is about strategy, consistency, and playing the long game.

You're the star in your own financial picture.

It can feel like you need to hit the long ball every time, especially when your goals are as big as yours.

Just like a star baseball player...

Work the count and take what the pitcher gives you.

Investment opportunities will present themselves to you.

You don't need to say 'yes' to everyone.

Don’t let the temptation of a quick win derail your long-term goals. 

Embrace the power of 'base hits' and play the long game.

I stopped budgeting in 2024.

(This is a better way to manage money)

It might sound shocking.

I mean, I'm a financial planner.

But my finances have never been better.

The old way of budgeting just doesn't cut it.

Defaulting to Spend (Traditional Budgeting):

→ Your paycheck hits your checking account.
→ You pay your bills and expenses.
→ You try to track everything with a spreadsheet with 30 different numbers.
→ Saving money becomes an afterthought.
→ You must consciously decide to after all your spending is accounted for.

This requires constant oversight and discipline. 

It’s a recipe for burnout and financial stress.

So, what’s the better way?

Defaulting to Save (Our Way):

→ Your paycheck is directly deposited into your Reservoir account.
→ Reservoir then automatically distributes money into various accounts.
→ You only need to manage one number: your spending number. 

Here’s how it works:

1. Direct deposit to Reservoir:

Instead of going straight to your checking account, your paycheck goes into your Reservoir. 

This account acts as a central hub for your finances.

2. Automated distribution:

Reservoir automatically allocates funds to different accounts based on pre-set rules. 

You have accounts for spending, investing, saving for specific goals, and more.

3. Manage one number:
All you need to focus on is your spending account. 

This account has a set amount of money you can spend without worrying about bills or savings because those are already taken care of.

4. Default to save:

Any excess money stays in the Reservoir, automatically increasing your savings. 

You have to consciously choose to spend more rather than save more.

This approach flips the traditional budgeting model on its head. 

Instead of constantly fighting the urge to spend and struggling to save, saving becomes the default. 

It simplifies money management and reduces financial stress.

Consider this:

A client of ours, overwhelmed with money management, switched to our Reservoir system this year. 

→ They were at a nearly $20,000 deficit on paper.
→ They were drowning in credit card debt.

In their 2nd month on the system, they actually SAVED $250.

This might feel like a small win but it’s more than that.

It proved that they could do better and, better yet, WIN.

They feel more in control of their finances than ever. (with less work)

They have a clearer picture of their financial health with just one number to manage.

The best part?

They didn’t feel deprived or restricted. 

They simply made smarter financial choices by default.

So, if traditional budgeting has left you feeling stressed and financially scattered, maybe it’s time to switch to a better way.

You realize that a bad investment CAN hurt you, right?

Keep playing with crypto, though. (Sarcasm)

We’ve all heard the stories. 

Your friend’s cousin who "made a fortune on Bitcoin."

The colleague who "swears by Dogecoin."

It’s tempting to invest your hard-earned money in the latest hot investment, thinking you'll become rich overnight.

But let’s get real for a minute.

Bad investments CAN and WILL hurt you.

The thrill of the gamble pales in comparison to the pain of regret. 

Your financial future doesn't deserve anything less than calculated decisions that protect it.

Look, I've fallen for the trap before.

I tried my hand at day trading in 2021 and lost $15k.

Better yet... I lost another $17k in crypto markets that same year.

In my eyes, it was my tuition to become a better investor.

Better to be $32k than $3.2M.

Whenever investing, remember these principles:

1. The best investment is the one you understand. 

→ If you don't understand something, you're more likely to want to sell if the value goes down. 
→ If it is a strong investment, you must hold through the downturns and that takes conviction in it.

2. Ensure your investments align with your investing style. 

→ Don't become a real estate investor if you want nothing to do with managing the property. 
→ Don't be a stock market investor if you want complete control over your investments.

You won't hear this everywhere, but...

You very well could be 1 bad investment from not reaching your goals.

In that case, your future is riding on where you put your money.

Start treating it like it.

Will you cut the bull crap?

You’re so busy making a living that you’re not to making a life.

We’ve all been there:

→ Chasing the next deal.
→ Aiming for that promotion.
→ Pushing hard to top of the leaderboard.

But when was the last time you took a break to enjoy the grind?

Have you spent quality time with your family without checking your emails?

I’m asking you because this WAS me.

Vacations weren’t reallt vacations.

I became a slave to my career.

I lost sight of what I was doing it all for.

The hustle is real, but so is the need to live.

Here’s how to balance building your career with living your best life:

1. Automate where you can.

Set up systems that handle the heavy lifting for you. 

Imagine knowing that every dollar is working towards your goals, even when you’re out enjoying a sunset with your loved ones.

2. Preschedule your breaks.

Just as you plan your sales strategies, plan your breaks. Schedule time off to recharge. 

Trust me, a refreshed mind performs better.

3. Align your financial goals with life goals

What are your life goals? 

Early retirement? 
World travel? 
Weekly family dinners? 

Make sure your strategy supports these dreams from all angles.

That means Personal AND Financial.

Remember, it’s not just about how much you earn but how well you live.

You have no idea where to start.

Real estate information changes significantly from market to market.

Having a realtor from your desired purchase location will be key to know the nuances of buying in that market.

2. Source your own closing attorney.

Whenever buying a property, you need an attorney to help with due diligence.

This is especially important when buying in a market you don't call "home."

The last thing you want is to be scammed on your dream.

3. Plan for how the purchase fits into your overall finances.

Figure out these things:

→ Do you have enough in your emergency fund even after closing on the property?

→ If not, how do you plan to finance the property? (mortgage, HELOC on current home)

→ Can you afford to pay the costs of the property even if it generates no rental income?

If this seems like a lot to figure out on your own...

It's because it is.

I can condense this list to 1 action item if you don't want to go alone:

Growing up, I always wanted a Mercedes Benz.

All the most successful people I knew drove Mercedes. 

It was a common theme over and over again. 

Something told me, "When I get that Mercedes, I’ll have made it."

Now, I’ve matured since then and recognize no material item means you’ve "made it." 

But I’ve been fortunate, blessed, and a little lucky to be successful in my career as a financial planner.

A deal for this Mercedes came up right on New Year’s Eve of 2022, and I jumped on it. 

It’s been a huge milestone for me, and in a way, I’m living my childhood dream. 

Two years later…

Buying this car is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. 

The red seatbelts have become a staple part of my brand, and every day I drive this car, it genuinely makes me feel happy.

Here’s what I’ve learned from this experience:

1. Dreams evolve but their essence remains.

As a kid, I saw the Mercedes as a symbol of success. 

Today, it’s not about the car itself but the journey it represents. 

Achieving this childhood dream reminds me of how far I’ve come.

2. Material goals aren’t inherently bad

There’s a popular narrative that you shouldn’t strive for material things. 

I’m here to tell you that you can, if you do things right and do not tie your self-worth to these objects.

3. Align your financial goals with personal happiness

This car is a daily reminder of hard work paying off. 

It adds genuine joy to my life, and that’s invaluable.

If you’re working hard and playing by the rules, it’s okay to reward yourself. 

Remember, it’s not about the Mercedes or even the red seatbelts…

It’s about your achievements and gratitude for them.

→ Continuously invest in yourself. Take courses, attend workshops, and develop your skills. The more valuable you become, the higher your earning potential.

You would be stunned how often I see clients come to us having made "good" one-off decisions that are all pulling them in different directions (and away from their goals).

→ A financial planner can create a tailored plan that aligns with your goals, helping you make informed decisions that work together not against each other.

I wanted to be a doctor for the money.
