Today I turn 26 years old.

I’ve been told “you’re wise beyond your years” more times than I can count.

It used to shock me, but as I’ve reflected on why I’ve become who I am, it doesn’t.

It all comes down to 3 things:

1. Pain
2. Failure
3. Data

Let me explain.

Some people live the same year over and over, wake up and equate their 30 years of experience to expertise.

On average, older people have been around longer and had more opportunities to take action.

Because of this, you would think they have taken more action and therefore learned from those opportunities.

But it isn’t the reality.

Most wait until the pain to change is less than the pain of staying the same.

Only then will they face potential failure.

But I will face failure before it’s necessary.

I take more action than the average person.

Now why do I do this?

Well, I actually struggle to make decisions.
It is one of my weaknesses.
Unless I have data.

I am analytical to my core.

Data helps me make sense of things.
Taking action gives me the data I need.
And the more I take, the more data I have.

The need for data overshadows my fear of failure or pain.

I’ll take 10x the action of the average person because I crave data like oxygen.

So I fail a LOT but I usually learn and correct myself before anyone has realized.

Wrapping this up…

All I want for my 26th birthday is for you to take more action.

If you are younger, don’t let your age be a crutch to not try something new.

If you are older, don’t let your age be an excuse to not get better.

I've been building in public my entire career. 

I had no other option than to be vulnerable along the way.

I began in financial services in 2020.

Started calling family, friends, and acquaintances.
Did a good job for them with their financial planning.
Earned the right to be intro'd to their extended networks.

Eventually, I needed to add other ways to grow my biz.

Started cold-calling.
Every morning from 9-12.
Had little to no success with it.

Eventually, I tried LinkedIn.

→ Posted hollow platitudes
→ Jumbled motivational thoughts
→ Cold pitched thousands of people

This went on for the 1st 2 years of my career. 

Again, I knew there had to be a better way.

Finally, I hit a pivotal moment.

I took Justin Welsh's course in July 2022.
Did a coaching call with him shortly after.
Began using LinkedIn with intention then.

Something amazing happened...

Prospects started showing up on my calendar every week.

Who woulda thought having an actual strategy mattered?

4 years later...

Clients come to me and at a faster rate than I ever could get them to if I were doing outreach like I did earlier in my career.

This is my reality all because I wasn't afraid to put myself out there.

I wasn't afraid to get told no.
I wasn't afraid to look stupid.
I wasn't afraid to build in public.

So here's the takeaway:

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

You will face negativity, yes.

But you will get much more opportunity.

The opportunity that the critics will never see in their lives.

It took 3 nights in Miami to remember this. 

What's REALLY important is not:

→ The 60-ounce margaritas
→ The beautiful hotel stays
→ The unreal Italian dinner

Okay, maybe the 60-ounce margs are...

Kidding. Sort of... Not really.

But seriously, to me? It's simple:

→ Celebrating my birthday with family
→ Eating some birthday cheesecake
→ Laying after with my goddaughter

THESE are the important things.

Me and Mattia had SO much fun in Miami.

It truly is my favorite city in the world.

But after a day full of travel?

The night at my parents was like a shot of serotonin into my veins.

(Serotonin is a hormone in our bodies that is associated with happiness and calmness)

We all get so caught up in "the game."

→ Live in the big house.
→ Drive the beautiful car.
→ Make the most money.

Alex Hormozi says we're all just playing one big poker game.

The only difference?

When you go to a casino to play poker, you can cash out and walk away at any time.

In the game of life, you can't, and all your chips go back to the house when you pass away.

Sure, we can do great estate planning and minimize taxes on the transfer of your wealth.

But eventually, it dwindles through generations.

You might be stressed right now.

Maybe your job is insecure, or you feel behind financially.

I'm here to remind you of what's really important.

→ Go hug your partner.
→ Go hug your kids.
→ Go hug a friend.

Life is about relationships.

And the harsh truth?

The only thing we REALLY own is memories.

You should want to be your best financially.

Just don't let it paralyze you with anxiety.

It puts unreasonable pressure on you.

Wealth is more than money.

That much I know.

The good life has 4 components:

→ Happy
→ Healthy
→ Wealthy 
→ Wise

If ANY of those are lacking, you will never feel better than the level that one is at.

For example:

If you have $50M and are independently wealthy…

But your marriage is broken and your kids hate you?

Your life will suck.

So here’s the moral of the story…

I know you want a big life.

Don’t let it be at your mental health’s expense.

If you can:

→ Pay your mortgage.
→ Put food on the table.
→ Gas up the car every week.
→ Take a vacation every year.

Your life is better than 99% of people in the world.

Keep the ambition for bigger and better.
Keep the desire to optimize your financials.

Just promise me one thing…

Don’t lose sight that the night out in a new city on a weekend trip with your partner IS the dream.

Those seemingly small moments make life great.

The wealthy own their assets differently.

(My attorney completely schooled me)

Some of them have their trusts own assets.

It isn't to get some crazy tax benefits.
It's for liability and privacy purposes.

Here's how I'm following them:

1. I created a living trust.
2. LLCs own my properties.
3. My businesses have LLCs.
4. The trust will own all the LLCs.
5. The trust will also own all my assets.

Why get so complex?

2 reasons:

1. To avoid probate.

→ Projecting probate fees if I passed yesterday would be $35,000.
→ Avoiding probate keeps the transfer of my estate private.
→ No probate typically means a quicker transfer of the estate, too.

2. Protect my assets from individual property liabilities.

Tenant at a rental slips and falls.

What can they sue me for?

→ Only for what the LLC owning that rental property owns.
→ They cannot go after any other assets.

As I build more wealth, this structure will simplify keeping it protected.

The foundation is in place.

Now, I add to it as time goes on.

So here's the takeaways from today's post:

→ As your net worth increases, you should begin estate planning.
→ Estate planning is about when you die and when you're alive.

Navigating the nuances is crucial.

There's nothing worse than believing you've got it all figured out...

Only to discover later that your plans were flawed.

Everyone has their highs & lows.

I’m no exception. 

Despite the happy stories I often tell here, there’s been plenty of struggles.

Flashback to July 2021. 

I was relatively new to the financial industry. 

I studied top advisors and saw they all had one thing in common: 

→ A business coach. 

That’s when Simon stepped in, pitching me a $4,500 6-week coaching program. 

He transformed my approach to financial planning, and I had a banner year. 

But was it sustainable? Not quite.

2022 rolled in, and anxiety gripped me. 

How could I possibly build on 2021? 

Instead of continuing with what worked, I leaned away from it. 

I re-hired Simon for ongoing coaching at $1,000 a month, but I bailed after just one month. 

Reflecting back, I realize I acted from a place of scarcity, not recognizing that I lacked the necessary skills to advance on my own.

Fast forward two years…

I’ve faced several struggles and learned even more hard lessons. 

I felt like I was just spinning my wheels. 

The hard truth? 

If I had stuck with Simon, I’d likely be much further along.

This past January, I re-hired Simon.

I’m pushing myself weekly and my clients are getting better outcomes from it.

Let me be clear though: 

→ I still struggle weekly. 
→ I have many bad days. 
→ I don’t have it all figured out.

We wrapped up a coaching call on my birthday yesterday.

I came home to a surprise delivery.

Pizza boxes labeled:

Better yet, it was from one of our favorite pizza places in our area.

As if the regular coaching wasn’t value enough, things like this remind me why Simon will be my coach for a long time.

So, here are 5 key takeaways from my journey with Simon:

1. Always play the long game. A seemingly ‘meaningless’ relationship today can be life-changing tomorrow.

2. You always pay for things in time or money. Opt for money when possible.

3. When challenges come up, confront them head-on. Embrace abundance over scarcity.

4. Never be the smartest in the room. Stay curious and humble.

5. It’s the small gestures that often mean the most.

But the right advisor doesn't cost you money.

They save you money.

After our initial plan, based on the retirement projections of our new strategies for each household, here are the recent results:

→ 52 and 49-year-old couple who are projecting a $23,146 per year increase.*

How did we do this?

→ Optimizing the tax efficiency of where investments are today

It's easy to be confident when the sun's shining.

Remember, in the world of finance, what you don’t know CAN hurt you. 

And sometimes, the cost of ignorance far outweighs the price of wisdom.

You can get things one of 2 ways:

1. If it's cheap, probably ain't gonna be valuable.
2. If it's valuable, it probably ain't gonna be cheap.

So let's put it out in the air right now.

Let me be real with you...

I was born to 2 amazing parents.
Their money guy, Timothy, mentored me.
I went to a top biz school on zero loans.
I interned with Timmy & he mentored me.
I was taught holistic financial planning day 1.
I gained another great mentor, Anthony.
I had early success but my ego blinded me.
I almost left the firm because this.
Neither of them stopped investing in me.
They never gave up on me, no matter what.
They support me immensely to this day.
Years later, my practice is thriving.

You see, God's been good to me.

He's put amazing people in my life.

But just as much as they've watched out for me...

I could have easily gone the other way.

Done the bare minimum and failed.

Instead, I feel an obligation to people like these 4.

An obligation to be the best I possibly can be.

I've been lucky enough that they saw something inside me.

Something that made me worth investing in.

Now, here's the lesson:

Look around.

Who has invested in you?

Are you giving everything you have to return the favor?

If the answer is no, turn it around today.

It's the least you could do for them.

When you think of "financial advisor," what do you see?

→ Old and grey?
→ Always uptight?
→ New, shiny loafers?
→ Uptight suit and tie?
→ Wears a nice watch?
→ Stereotypical briefcase?

That's what I did, at least.

And as I began my career, I tried to be that.

I even tried to hide my personal life from clients.

I didn't want them to think I wasn't stereotypical advisor guy.

I guess it was because I didn't have an identity yet.

But I didn't bother looking for myself.

It did me no good.

→ I attracted clients that wanted that.
→ It drained my energy to be that guy.
→ Every single day got harder & harder.

The worst part of it all?

I was "succeeding" by everyone else's standards.

You know how 1+1=2?
↳ Being someone you're not = burnout.

I hit a mental low in early 2022.

I had no idea:

→ Why I was taking the action I was.
→ Who I was trying to become.
→ What my purpose was.

I hit a harsh reality that I would take some steps back.

But it was all to take many more forward.

I stopped being stereotypical advisor guy.

I started being Mando.

→ I wear sneakers.
→ I wear an Apple Watch.
→ I never wear a tie with my suits.
→ I use a backpack, not a briefcase.

Better yet, I began to show my personal side.

→ I am a fitness enthusiast.
→ I love traveling with my fiance.
→ I'm all about rap and hip-hop music.
→ I will gladly enjoy some red wine or tequila.
→ I'm a diehard Steelers, Celtics, and Red Sox fan.

And guess what happened once people knew this?

→ I attracted clients that wanted that.
→ It fed my energy to be that guy.
→ Every single day gets better.

You want to be this stereotype because you want success.

But what you don't realize?

By being the best version of yourself...

You BECOME the successful stereotype.

You will never feel like you're ahead.

Isn't that what you signed up for, though?

I mean, as a high achiever, your life is complex.

→ You win, then you're reset to zero.
→ You love your life, but you want more.
→ You're doing good, yet you want better.

Put this in a pot, mix it all up and you feel behind.

You compare yourself to others daily.

→ Everyone at work.
→ Everyone in your industry.
→ Everyone you see on LinkedIn.

You seek validation CONSTANTLY.

Everything you do is driven by it.

But what good is external validation if you don't have it from the person in the mirror?

No amount of money...
Or recognition...
Or success...

Will bring you what you're looking for.

In 2021, I won New Advisor of the Year.
↳ In 2022, I had new goals and was back to 0.

In 2022, went to Italy, France, Miami, Boston, and NYC.
↳ In 2023, I still wanted to travel more.

In 2023, I bought my first two properties.
↳ It's 2024, and I still want to buy more.

You see, there will always be room for MORE.

You will never feel like there is enough until you DO.

Follow this plan and create:

1. A crystal clear vision.
2. A blueprint to achieve it.
3. Specific actions to take.

It can help you live fulfilled with less anxiety.

How do I know?

I live it, myself.

How can one create a blueprint for success?

What are the common challenges faced by high achievers?

How can one reduce the need for external validation?

I started life on first base, but my parents weren’t even in the starting lineup.

They did EVERYTHING to provide the opportunity my sister and I have had.

I hit the parent lottery.

→ Both graduated college.
→ Successful medical careers.
→ A stable and loving marriage.

At some level, my success has nothing to do with me.

If it weren’t for my parents, I would have nothing.

Growing up, I felt confused.

At home, my parents would teach me:

→ Hard work can get you anywhere.
→ Treat everyone the same.

At school, people would call me:

→ A “try-hard”
→ A “loser”

It felt like everything my parents were teaching me was wrong even though I knew it was right.

No matter what happened through grade school and through college…

I was reinforced to work hard and treat people well every single day.

Do you realize the power of being mentally conditioned to do those 2 things?

→ I complained? Work harder.
→ I was done wrong? Be the bigger person.

I hated being told this growing up.

I now realize it was priceless.

I know I’m privileged.

But that doesn’t matter.

We are all dealt a hand in life’s game of poker.

It isn’t about what you’re dealt.

It’s what you DO with what you’re dealt.

→ How many people born to a worse off that are WAY more successful right now?

→ How many people born better off that completely threw their life away?

So whether you start life on 1st base, 2nd, 3rd or if you’re not even in the starting lineup…

There is always a path forward.

So is life fair? Probably not.

It sure wasn’t for my parents growing up.

They had loving families.

But they had to work way harder for what they have than I ever did.

At the end of the day, you either focus on fairness or making the best of your situation.

Just like my parents did for my sister and I.

Think about both professional and personal achievements. 

→ Selling your business for a certain number
→ Taking your spouse on a trip every quarter
→ Paying for your children's college tuition

Consider how you want to evolve as a person.

All in all...

And still invest 33% of my income.

Here’s how I’ve done it:

Years 1-2

→ Sacrificed as much as possible.
→ Spent basically NOTHING.
→ Saved/invested $80,000.

Year 3

→ Totally burned out.
→ Overspent on myself because of it.
→ Learned that money ≠ happiness at all.

Year 4

→ Started to find harmony.
→ Dialed in my vision & defined success.
→ Broke my rewards into monthly savings.

Year 5

I implemented 2 major changes:

1. I learned travel hacking.

My travel averaged $12k per year.

Instead of paying that out of pocket…

I learned how to leverage reward programs from hotels, airlines and credit cards.

In 2024 I will shave ~$4,500 off of that.

2. I got off of America’s banking treadmill.

Have you ever signed up for a free trial?

It ends, you forget and get charged.

The banking system is set up like this.

The worst part?

You never even realized.

Income hits your checking.
You pay bills, expenses, & live life.
You have $X left over to save/invest.

You now need to OPT-IN to save.

The problem?

You often will put away less than you actually can because you get sticker shock at the number you can be saving.

I flipped this completely on its head.

My income hits my Reservoir.

It sends money to my spending (checking) accounts to cover all spending.

It sends money to my investments.

If I begin to make more income, my Reservoir will build up.

I now need to CHOOSE to spend more.

It’s impossible to experience lifestyle creep.

I am defaulting to save.

99% of America is defaulting to spend.

So yeah…

Balance is a complete myth.

You find a better way to do things.

And you find the way that works for YOU.

You build a system and process for what works.

Then go all in with it.

Last month, we lost a potential $20M client.

We could have let it crush us, but instead, we used it to grow.

Our team walked through EXACTLY how we would help him if he hired us.

Here's what we would do:

1. Goal setting

→ Lay out his personal, financial, and business goals.
→ This includes timeline, financial needs, and legacy considerations.

2. Create the baseline

→ Get a current valuation of the business.
→ Identify the assets needed to produce the post-exit income needed.
→ Assess if the business's current value will fill the gap of total assets needed.

3. Identify opportunity

→ Mitigate risks that could impact the business's value.
→ Improve upon the weaknesses within the business today.
→ Create a detailed plan to improve profitability and efficiency.

4. Explore options

→ Educate him on all his options to exit the business.
→ This includes a sale to a third party or an inside buyout.

5. Prepare the business for sale

→ Ensure financial records are accurate and complete.
→ Assemble a team of advisors, including M&A advisors, accountants, and attorneys, to assist with the sale process.

6. Transition

→ Ensure the client has a clear plan for their life post-exit.
→ Align it with their initial goals and objectives discussed.

Did it suck that we did not get the opportunity to work with him? 

Yes.

But if you asked me?

It might have sucked more that he did not get the opportunity to work with US.

Next time something doesn't go your way, find the opportunity to grow in it.

Better yet, find the silver lining.

Every book I chose for a specific reason.

I didn't just choose to read randomly.
I chose books to be applied to my life.

At a point, info becomes entertainment.

You can read all the books in the world.
But if you aren't applying them, it's a waste.

You may as well be watching Netflix.

Here's my process when choosing a book:

1. Identify the things I want to improve right now.
2. Define the outcome I desire from the book.
3. Choose 1 action item after each chapter.
4. Reference the book as I am applying it.
