Every single day, opinions about marketing rain down from everywhere. 

The CEO who suddenly has “thoughts” on your campaign after reading some random blog post. The salesperson with zero marketing experience who’s certain they know what will work better. The board member who forwards articles with “Have we considered this?”

Words are cheap, and everyone has access to them. Everyone thinks they’re a marketing expert because they’ve seen marketing. It’s like thinking you can perform surgery because you’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy.

Your most critical job isn’t crafting strategy. It’s protecting your team from the endless deluge of half-baked opinions that would otherwise destroy their focus and confidence. Their sanity depends on what you choose to block.

But here’s the brutal catch: occasionally, buried in that mountain of mediocre opinions, there’s a genuine insight. Sometimes the random suggestion from accounting contains the spark of brilliance. The trick isn’t blocking everything, it’s filtering with surgical precision.

The true art of marketing leadership is handling these opinions in a way where the good ones reach your team while the useless ones mysteriously vanish. And you must do this while making sure the person sharing feels heard rather than dismissed, because you never know where the next great idea might come from.

This balancing act is what separates elite marketing leaders from the disposable ones. Anyone can build a strategy. Few can shield their team while simultaneously mining occasional gold from mountains of dirt.

Your marketing team’s performance doesn’t just depend on your strategic vision. It depends on your ability to be the perfect shit umbrella, blocking distractions while ensuring they get exposed to the ideas that matter.

The hardest part? Doing it all while making everyone feel heard, even when what they’re saying is absolute nonsense. Because in marketing, today’s critic might be tomorrow’s genius.
