When I handed in my resignation, no one saw it coming.


I’d been there for years.

Always reliable.
Always working extra hours.

But after being overlooked for another promotion, I was done.

I was sick of people getting recognition just for being louder or just because they attended every after work drinks.

When I gave my notice, everything changed.

Suddenly my manager wanted to talk about “opportunities for growth" and a 'healthy' payrise which they were already due to do that month.. convenient timing

I should have heard these things when it mattered.

I didn’t leave for money,although money is important.

I left because I was tired of proving my value to people who only recognised those who spoke more.

That’s the thing about introverted professionals.

We give everything we have quietly, without needing the spotlight.

The main feedback we get is around how we need to speak more

Companies always say they want better talent, but that's not true.

Manager: You need to speak up more if you want to move ahead.

Me: I like to think before I speak. It helps me say something worth saying.

Manager: That’s not really how leadership works here.

I remember taking that to heart. I genuinely thought I’d have to change my personality to move forward in my career.

Looking back now,after helping over 400 introverted professionals advance and seeing more than 360 promotions from my clients,I realise I was never the problem.

The culture was.

If you only reward the people who speak the most, you’ll lose the ones who actually think before they do.

Then the next meeting comes around.

I go to speak.

Someone interrupts me.
My manager says nothing.

I leave feeling frustrated and self-conscious.

Because when you’re naturally more introverted, it’s not that simple to just “speak up.”

It takes time to process your thoughts, to form what you want to say and by the time you’re ready, the moment’s already passed.

A much better approach?

Have a word with the people who constantly interrupt.

It still amazes me how this cycle continues , telling quieter people to speak more, instead of asking louder ones to listen better.

One piece of career advice I’d give to anyone feeling stuck:

Be more selfish.

For years, I was a people pleaser at work.

I’d be deep in a project, and the moment an email notification popped up, I’d drop everything to reply.

My focus was constantly being pulled in different directions. I told myself it was because I was being helpful, but really, it was fear.

I worried that if I said no to a last-minute request or turned down extra work, I’d cause conflict or disappoint someone.

The problem with that is you end up doing more work but getting less recognition.

Once I started to build my confidence, I began asking myself a different question:

“What’s best for my career?” instead of always asking, “What’s best for everyone else?”

My performance improved. My impact grew.
And ironically, it helped the company too.

So start being more selfish.

 The louder people seem to take up more space, and you start to question if you’re even the right fit for leadership.

The problem isn’t your personality. It’s that you’ve been trying to lead in a way that doesn’t fit who you are.

What worked previously, won't work now.

Once you learn to communicate with calm authority and use your strengths to lead instead of fighting against them, things change. 

People start paying attention. 

You get noticed for the value you bring. And you stop feeling like you have to prove yourself in every room.

A client shared something shocking yet relatable about his manager last week


My client is part of my Introvert Career Accelerator program, he mentioned last week there was two after work events that week

His manager wanted him to attend both. However, he'd been working on a big project recently and didn't have the energy for both.

Which is totally reasonable.

However, he mentioned when he doesn't attend those after-work events his manager is off with him the next day and will say things like

"It would have been nice to have seen you last night" Even though he attended the other one

This is a classic example of what so many of us introverts go through. Our energy gets drained easily, however if we don't attend every event, we get judged for it

I'm not saying we shouldn't make an event to attend things, of course we should

But we shouldn't judge people when they don't attend

One thing I used to hate about myself at work,but I was so wrong.


I always felt like an outsider around people.

If I went to grab a drink of water and saw people chatting, I’d avoid it. Even if it was just one person there.

I genuinely believed I couldn’t lead unless I changed my personality.

Corporate teaches us that to progress, you have to be a certain type of person.

So if you’re in a leadership role now or hoping to move into one, you’ve probably got into the habit of wishing you had a different personality.

Every time you’re around people, you catch yourself thinking:

“Am I interesting enough?”
“Do I have the personality to lead?”
“Should I be speaking more?”

I reached a point where I decided something had to change. It didn’t happen overnight. It took years of deep work to finally start accepting my personality instead of constantly trying to change it.

Ten years later, I’ve worked with over 400 clients in my Introvert Career Accelerator program and trained 47 teams across some of the world’s biggest companies.

And now, people often tell me, “You’re so relatable.”

It just shows how powerful it is when you stop trying to be someone else  and start owning who you are.

Introverts are sick of these phrases from managers



"You should speak up more."

"You need to come out of your shell more."

"You need to show more personality."

"You don't seem part of the team."


These phrases damage a person's confidence.

And result in them not reaching their full potential because they constantly worry about how they're coming across.

I know this from personal experience.
