The ride sharing giant proved to be a cautionary tale of about blowing up (+)…and blowing up (-). 

🔹 Meteoritic Rise, Significant Price

Uber transformed ride-hailing globally but took many unnecessary risks.

For a long time, they got away with it. 

🔹 CEO's Downfall

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was hit with accusations of a toxic “bro culture."

He also became the unwitting star in a harmful display of bullying.

Incriminating videos of him berating an Uber driver surfaced. They were captured by the driver's camera, then uploaded for the entire world to see. 

🔹 Public Backlash

Initial tolerance for Uber's antics shifted dramatically.

Criticism surged, leading to a #deleteuber movement, urging users to choose competitors.

The narrative morphed from tolerating the aggressive and brash CEO to widespread disapproval.

🔹 Leadership Shift

Acknowledging the urgent need for change, Uber’s board ousted Kalanick.

It marked a recognition that the strategies that catalyzed Uber's rise were ill-suited for its future.

🔹 The Paradox of Success

Kalanick’s audacity and feisty spirit were instrumental in Uber's early days as it overcame legal and regulatory hurdles.

Yet, while this win-at-all-costs mentality propelled Uber to unprecedented heights, it eventually became its Achilles heel.

Uber's saga underscores a profound leadership lesson: adaptability and ethical governance are non-negotiable.

Stop chiming in where you're not needed. 
 
Authenticity in business doesn't mean you have to be a commentator on every hot-button issue. 
 
It's irrelevant. 
 
Here's what I mean... 
 
If you're diving into every controversial topic out there, it's not a smart move. 
 
You risk alienating half your audience. 
 
Imagine talking politics or religion, and suddenly, half your customers aren't seeing eye to eye with you. 
 
Being authentic isn't about broadcasting your stance on every societal conflict. 
 
It's about being real with who you are and what matters to YOU. 
 
Got a cause close to your heart? 
 
Absolutely, speak up. 
 
But for most, wading into every societal debate offers little benefit. 
 
This pressure isn't just on big corporations. 
 
Small businesses and solopreneurs are feeling it too. 
 
But here's my opinion – it's totally absurd. 
 
Take Gatorade, for example. 
 
They're about hydration and electrolytes for athletes. 
 
Why should we care about their stance on abortion? 
 
Same goes for influencers and celebrities. 
 
They're paid to entertain, not to be geopolitical experts. 
 
So why do we expect them to weigh in on every world issue? 
 
My advice: Stick to your lane. 
 
Focus on delivering value through your products or services. 
 
Your customers care more about how you're solving their problems than where you stand on every issue under the sun. 
 
In today's world, it's a tightrope walk, but err on the side of caution. 
 
Don't jump into every debate unless you're really pressed to do so. 
 
If it's irrelevant to your organization, product, or services, then don't bother. 
 
Save yourself the headache, and protect your reputation.

If you have a great 'but,' you can make anyone do what you want.

Not what you're thinking…

Today's lesson in persuasion focuses on the positives vs. the negatives.

When you lead with the negative, their mind latches onto it. 

“This hotel is pricier, BUT the views make it worth it.”

Flip it.

Start with the positive.

“The views here are great! We're close to everything, BUT it's a bit pricier.”

See the difference?

The second one paints a picture of value before the “but” even enters the scene.

It's all about how you frame it.

Lead with the good stuff, then drop the bad news.

That way, the positives almost always outweigh the downsides.

Next time you're trying to persuade someone, use your “'but” wisely.

Mark Zuckerberg, Travis Scott, and Alec Baldwin all share one thing in common...

They're examples of what NOT to do in a crisis.

Avoid their mistakes at all costs:

Mark Zuckerberg

The social media CEO took some major heat a few years back.

Facebook employees and whistleblowers accused Facebook of operating in bad 
faith and suppressing evidence that its platforms harm kids.

Zuckerberg failed to address their concerns and dug in even deeper, a clear violation of crisis management 101: Never ignore a brewing crisis.

He didn't take responsibility; he largely blamed the press for deliberately conducting a smear campaign.

And he was practically forced to apologize…

Travis Scott

The Astroworld disaster is an epic example of failed crisis management.

He apologized for the chaos but his words rang hollow, considering his notorious reputation for encouraging mayhem at his events.

And despite cries from concertgoers to "stop the show," the concert proceeded for nearly another hour.

It fueled criticism that:

• The organizers didn't take proper precautions
• Scott did too little to mitigate the disaster

Alec Baldwin

Baldwin's attempt to clear his name in an ABC interview backfired spectacularly.

He denied responsibility for the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins, blamed the gun, and claimed that he did not pull the trigger.

He was the target of numerous lawsuits claiming the incident resulted from a "culture of negligence."

And his social media posts brought him even more criticism...

Each of these examples underscores critical missteps in handling crises:

• Ignoring the problem
• Avoiding responsibility
• Ineffective communication
• Misjudging public perception

What are the lessons learned from the Astroworld disaster?

"We are watching you.  Racist b*tch. We will make sure your business will always suffer.  Burn in hell and we'll piss on your grave."   

That is the type of hate mail Lisa Alexander continues receiving four years after she encountered a man who recorded her on the streets of San Francisco and posted his video online calling her a "Karen" and falsely accusing her of calling the police on him.  

The story went viral and cost Lisa her business--and nearly her life when a gang of people with weapons showed up at her door to attack her.  Her body went into shock and she nearly died in the hospital when her organs shut down.

There is a human toll to  #cancel culture. Lisa's story inspired me to write my book The Cancel Culture Curse opposing the practice.  It also led me to sit with Dr. Phil McGraw at the Merit Street Media studios to talk about the need for Americans to treat one another with more grace, as opposed to rushing to tear each other apart.  

I encourage you to consider that there are actual people with real lives that don't deserve to lose everything because they become the target of online abuse. 

And keep this in mind: if you find yourself being attacked you MUST refuse to be cancelled. Tell your story immediately or risk being defined by haters.

Part of the reason Israel is losing the PR war while prevailing against Hamas on the battlefield is it's delivering too many messages rather than a singular one: RETURN THE HOSTAGES. Every call for a ceasefire should be met forcefully with the retort: the ceasefire can happen, but only after the innocent hostages are returned.
