"Thank you for saying that product management is hard, because my team thinks it should be easy and it's demotivating them that it's not"

This was a fascinating and eye-opening comment after my talk last night. Why should product management be easy? Anyone can do easy things! 

I fundamentally believe that product management is a uniquely hard role. Now, that's not to say that other roles aren't also hard but, despite what some LinkedIn chads might want you to believe, it's much more than just an easy add-on for engineers.

It's hard because PMs are in the centre of everything, having to zoom in and out constantly, context switching not just between types of tasks but also having to almost switch vocabularies to get buy-in from stakeholders who don't know what any of this product management malarkey means. 

Meanwhile, many PMs are working in organisations that poorly understand product management, some of which possibly had no business hiring product managers at all. At best, they're constantly being randomised by a company with no strategy worth the name, and at worst they're being forced into feature factory delivery mode and told to shut up when they try to make things better. 

But, even when it's going "well", it's still hard, because the coordination and collaboration and strategic thinking and zooming and vocabulary work all stay the same. You can't just follow a 1-2-3 framework to dominate a category. It's a slog.

The PMs that have the best chance of succeeding are the ones who can handle, nay, can thrive in such conditions. I would argue that anyone wanting an easy life should probably consider a different career choice. But, if you're the type of person who enjoys trying to make a purse out of a pig's ear, there's plenty of things you can do to make things better. 

And, of course, follow me or drop me a line if you want help identifying and doing some of those things!

The type of "AI product manager" I want to see is an impact-focused PM who deeply understands business and customer constraints, empathises with their problems and provides meaningful solutions that may include AI but may not. They will probably use AI tools to help enhance, not replace, their thinking.

I categorically don't just want someone who smashes buttons until an LLM spits out something that looks nice.

I've been reflecting on the different phases of my product management social media journey: 

Phase 1 - Pre-history - no real presence at all, and a network entirely populated by people I'd worked with.

Phase 2 - The "redshirt" period - people start taking notice of my stuff, and I start occasionally getting tagged as the plus one in lists of product people to follow.

Phase 3 - The "high on my own supply" period where I actually started to believe I was someone important... I'm actually not that proud of this period and I don't think I did myself any favours.

Phase 4 - Retreat - trying to focus on doing the actual work rather than just talking about it, and helping the community as best I can. Declining reach but perhaps a better reputation?

Phase 5 - Obsolescence? With LinkedIn in the toilet and 150 million billion people trying to "make it" with podcasts, content and social media grinding, is it even ethically sustainable to add to the noise?

TBH, each of these these periods has its own pros and cons, but I do sometimes wonder what's next!

"How do you both feel about being industry thought leaders?" was an uncomfortable question for both me and Martin Eriksson at the event on Wednesday. 

We both protested that we are not thought leaders (just very naughty boys), just people who are trying to do their best to help and share what they know. 

In any case, it made me think - what *is* a thought leader? Does it have to be someone who's been there and done that and got the t-shirt? Does it have to be someone who has 150 million billion followers and a podcast? Do they have to have original thoughts or just share other people's? What's the difference between a thought leader and an influencer? (Big clue: Influencers have more followers, suspiciously regular LinkedIn posts and might even sometimes disclose that they're being paid to post about that app that they suddenly can't get enough of).

Anyway, here's a fun table of "thought leaders" as provided by ChatGPT (which says that I *am* a thought leader, but B tier, and not an influencer. I guess I'll take it). In any case, here's to all the people that are leading, or at the very least thinking, and all of our little differences.

Heavily sales-led decision-making can be brutal for B2B product managers, but it isn't going anywhere. 

You all know the drill: The product team (hopefully) pulls together a strategy based on the evidence they can get, but within weeks or days there's been a Sales escalation to the head of product and often to the CEO... "we just need this one feature to close the deal... surely we can fit this in?"

The obvious problem is that it's quicker to ask for things than to build them and commitments, once made, hang around a product team's neck like an anchor while the Sales team are speaking to the next potential customer. 

There's no one solution to this, but Saeed K. and I are doing our best to arm product managers with the tools, frameworks and approaches to do their best and make the relationship with Sales work for PMs, and vice versa.

I see versions of this dynamic often:

🤯 A desire to make things "work better"
🤯 A complete lack of training or coaching budget
🤯 Go back to step 1

Now, I'm obviously biased since I provide training and coaching, but too often the blame falls squarely on a product management team that has never been told what good looks like and has never received any guidance on how to achieve it. 

Meanwhile, product performance and overall results remain sluggish, and everyone's unhappy.  But at least they saved £1,500 on that workshop!

Leaders! Invest in your product teams!

The vibe is all with AI product management these days, but B2B PMs know where the real challenges lie within their organisation - their relationship with the Sales team!
