Just a word of advice for Job Seekers, especially Black Job seekers.

In several, Recruiter focused Slack and WhatsApp groups there has been an increase in conversations around how Job seekers are reacting to the rise in Return to Office mandates.

For the most part these conversations are harmless and pretty straightforward, but I saw an interaction yesterday that made me sick to my stomach.

A fellow Recruiter that I actually liked, said to our group that he was passing on a “perfect candidate” that he reached out to because they informed him that they would be willing to take a substantial paycut to stay remote.

The reasoning as to why wasn’t clear but the word “paycut” was perceived as a red flag and this recruiter started running through different scenarios as to why that might be.

“He’s trying to pull a fast one and is going to push for more later.”

“He’s trying to work multiple jobs and he’s trying to be overemployed”

“He must be on a PIP and knows the axe is coming down on him, probably a problematic employee”

I was brushed off when I suggested what sounded obvious to me “maybe he has a young family and the daily commute would be too much for him?”

Whatever the case, someone lost out on an opportunity for being too honest and it allowed someone else to create a narrative for them to justify their irrational decision making.

There’s no humanity in a lot of these processes so I urge you to be strategic with what you share.

Be intentional, Be mindful and Be careful about the information you reveal to Recruiters, Hiring Managers or even your Bosses.

People will use the information to tell your story for them without your input.

And to me, that’s the first step to dehumanizing someone which in itself is a very dangerous slippery slope. 

Stay Dangerous. 

PS: If you’re the admin for that group and you see this and it makes you want to kick me out of your group, go right ahead. 

I will always side with the people and the Black community over faceless corporations.

Controversial opinion but if a Company forces you to relocate to a High Cost of Living area like LA, SF, Seattle, Toronto, London etc. and then lays you off.

They should be forced to pay your Rent/Mortgage for at least a year on top of your severance.

It’s one thing to lay someone off in their hometown with a support system and a low cost of living.

It’s just straight up evil to do it when you forced them to relocate and sign a new lease/mortgage and then tell them deuces.

I in good conscious will never tell people to not prioritize themselves over a faceless corporation. 

Loyalty only to yourself, family and your real friends. 

And FYI someone doesn’t know your Mama’s first name then they arent a real friend. 

Im just saying.

Kamala Harris did such a great job at the debate last night, and while there are highlight reels of her performance, the thing I loved the most was her facial expressions—telling an entire story and sharing some insights into her thoughts about her opponent.

One of my favorite things about being Black, especially in the workplace, is communicating with other Black folx non-verbally.

Whether through body language or facial expressions, Black people from across the world and all different spectrums have this innate ability to communicate whole paragraphs with just a look.

This is why I’ve always loved having a few Black people at my workplaces, especially the toxic ones.

Those non-verbal cues can make you feel less alone, especially in the face of a crazy toxic manager.

It could be the universally accepted head nod. It could be the “I can’t believe they just said that” look. It can even be the “Nah, I’m not going to the after-work party” look.

I love us, and watching Kamala’s facial expressions gave me absolute life.

PS: Black folks. Are you able to trascribe this? Does it give you childhood flashbacks? IYKYK.

Another Big Tech company is pushing their workers to go back in the office Fulltime.

There are a lot of thoughts I have on this but the 3 that come to mind are these:

1) A lot of employers try this move in an effort to get staff to leave on their own so they dont have to pay a severance. 

If you are in this position You should be taking notes down on all your accomplishments. 

Look at the dashboards you have access to while you’re still able to access them and you should also start networking with everyone around you especially folks who are disgruntled about this move.

2) If remote work is your priority, familiarize yourself with companies who are categorized as “Fully distributed” these are employers who intentionally built themselves around having a global workforce and will remain Remote friendly indefinitely.

Start looking for a new job but don’t quit your job until you have something in hand. Times like these call for strategic movements. 

Do what you can at your current job to get promoted or take on new initiatives so that you can build up your resume. 

There’s a new Technology being implemented? 

Get on that team, get your hands on that work while simultaneously looking elsewhere so you can jump ship when it suits you with as much leverage as possible. 

3.) Realize that this is temporary and is being pushed hard because it’s an employer’s market and many employers expect you to be grateful to have a job even if it comes with a bunch of abuse and hostility. 

These markets are like pendulums and when things switch back in favour of the employee or when the market normalizes, Remote work will resurge because it will be the most effective talent attraction strategy. 

Hang in there, and bide your time. 

Stay connected. Skill up. Build community, be on the lookout and stay Dangerous.

I learned the hard way that you can’t just go to an interview dressed as anything.

I feel and understand Gen Z wanting the workplace to relax a bit, but I don’t think we’re there as a society just quite yet.

There was a job at a radio station that I wanted, and when I heard the phrase, ‘Dress for the job you want,’ I misinterpreted that.

I ended up wearing a chain and a Kangol hat (like the one Biggie used to wear), and the interview that was scheduled for 45 minutes lasted 15 minutes instead.

When I came home disappointed, my dad basically gave me a ‘no shit, Sherlock, what did you expect?’ He thought I was headed to a poetry slam.

It was a lesson, and I learned that despite how modern our society is, the corporate world can be a few steps behind.

Since then, I tended to overdress for interviews, but it was better being safe than sorry.

For those curious, here was the outfit I wore 😅 I was 21 years old

I’m starting to see more Recruiters getting jobs, Im getting more employers reaching out asking for Referrals. 

Things look to be getting a bit better and I hope to see more.

I get a lot of heat from people on this platform whenever I advocate for people to just be loyal to themselves.

I will get Hiring Managers, Business Owners, and Recruiters who come into my comments and make all types of excuses and reasons why workers should be okay with being taken advantage of, abused, and made miserable in their jobs.

Some of these comments come from a place of caution, which is fair and should always be exercised.

Others seem to come from a need to see employees as subservient, almost as if they’re second-class citizens who should be grateful for the chance to be abused.

Yeah, that’s never going to fly with me.

Even though the market is crazy, this should not deter you from seeking or entertaining new opportunities.

Simple math says it’s in your best interest to do so.

If you factor in inflation, and you didn’t get a raise of about 6% of your salary, congratulations—you got a pay cut, and your employer is well aware of that.

There are lots of reasons to stay put and bide your time.

But none of them are good enough for you to turn your back on opportunities that benefit you.

Because we know a lot of employers took the opportunity to protect their bottom line with layoffs or to appease their investors with RTO.

So why can’t it go both ways? Especially if you apply strategic thinking, rationale, and careful execution.

Get what you deserve. Stay dangerous.

While everyone is eyeing jobs at big tech companies, there’s a growing demand for tech talent in mature industries that many wouldn’t typically consider. With the rising costs of operations and the ever-increasing capabilities of technology, many traditional industries are undergoing massive business transformations.

What does this mean?

These industries are gearing up to implement cutting-edge technology like AI, automation, full virtualization, and more. They’re starting to invest heavily in large-scale digital transformation projects that will have a significant impact on how they operate and compete.

Some sectors that are flying under the radar but making serious investments in tech include:
Tobacco
Hospitality
Agriculture
Sports and Entertainment

I've seen a lot of real world success as people have had to become creative in this market to succeed.

Every success story in this market tastes sweet. 

It reminds me of the Jamaican carrot juice my Mom used to make me that delicious condensed milk that comes in the can.

Black people, I’m rooting for you. Black People don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong. 

Black people you deserve and have a right to work in Tech and experience a successful career.

I love you Gen Z. It doesn’t matter if it’s an employer market. It doesn’t matter how hard they fought for the job.

The social contract between Employers and Employees was broken when millennials just started to enter the workforce.

We still remember stories of our predecessors buying houses, feeding families and retiring all from one workplace.

Gen Z did not grow up seeing that first hand, those days might as well be tales from Ancient Rome.

And because of that they all have this spark of rebellion in them.

Gen Z will rightly call out a lot of toxic workplace practices that we’ve normalized.

Why did it become acceptable to communicate outside of working hours? 

Why is it okay for employers to have the right to cross boundaries in our personal lives but to paint you as the villain as soon as you try to prioritize a work/life balance.

I love Gen Z and I’m excited to see how they’ll change the workplace when they start moving into managerial and leadership positions.

My 3 Laws of maximizing your chances of getting an interview callback with just your resume alone.

1.	Apply to jobs that have been posted within the first 24-48 hours to ensure you’re among the first batch of candidates.

2.	Tailor your resume to tell a particular story/theme that is highly relevant and value-driven to the position’s relationship with customers, product improvement, or the company’s overall mission.

3.	DO NOT solely rely on percentages to demonstrate your impact metrics. 

Use a variety of quantifiable metrics to tell your story and make your resume more interesting to read (see below for examples).

Stay dangerous.

PSA: My beard is looking a bit untamed because my barber has been on vacation for the last little bit. 

Some of you are aware of what happened the last time I cheated on my barber and why I refuse to make that mistake again.

If this guy can get a job in public office you can get a job in Tech.

Delusions of grandeur and audacity can take you so far.

Don’t doubt yourself or your opportunities because he certainly didn’t and his audacity has allowed him to talk nonsense at the highest stages in our so deep.

Yes, you can get that high paying job that’s remote if that’s what you want.

Anything is possible. Just look at the world’s political leaders.

One of the most depressing things a Canadian, especially a Canadian tech employee, can do is look up the salaries of their U.S.-based counterparts.

People with the same job title and experience, just a few kilometers away in a country with a very similar culture to ours.

The differences can be staggering.

So, it boggles my mind why, since the 70s, employers have been telling immigrants they need “Canadian experience” when, based on how Canadian employers pay people, they don’t even value Canadian experience that much.

Mek it mek sense.

I have a confession to make. As much as I love summer, I love fall even more.

It's not that I hate summer; I just love fall more, and it's not because I'm petty.

It's not because I have seasonal allergies that allow pollen to routinely beats my ass every summer like a bad child in a Jamaican household who just got suspended from school. (Ask me how I know) 

It's not because the basketball courts open up and I get to live out my hoop dreams, even though my play style is a mix of Draymond Green and Dennis Rodman, which tends to lead to a lot of angry on-court confrontations.

And it's not because mosquitoes like to treat me like an all-you-can-eat buffet.

No, I love fall simply because I get to rock my fit. You know the one.

The turtleneck, gold chain, brunch boots, and peacoat combo.

I've been waiting for this season all year. I have several different turtlenecks and several different peacoats. It's my time to shine.

I hate that fall is so short; I only get about two good months to show off my rotation, but I'll take what I can get.

I'll find a couple of offices to work out of just so that every one can see the Fashion Icon that is Fall Time Jermaine. Q3 Jobfather.
