Im a firm believer that the traditional definition of “Professionalism” is one that is deeply rooted in an archaic and flawed view.

What’s it like negotiating salary summed up in a Star Wars clip

Normalize Hiring Managers and Recruiters telling people when they're asking for too little money.

No one wins when you let someone go underpaid. They feel undervalued and more often than not you're probably going to have to refill the role because that person left for more money. 

Let's normalize conversations like " Jamal, you asked for 80K but the average wage for this role is 100k so we'd like to offer you 100K."

Imagine how much better employee-employer relations would be?

One thing that I have been doing a lot for people in our community is to try and hold companies accountable when they start behaving unethically.

Case in point, on Friday, it was brought to my attention that a company had stood up three different people from our community for interviews, and to say that I was extremely angry is an understatement.

When people from our community tell me about these kinds of things, I personally reach out to the company's hiring team to bring it to their attention. I do this because I want to see how they react and if they can improve.

Sometimes, it's an honest mistake and they will arrange another interview with our community member, which I appreciate. However, if they don't show remorse or even acknowledge the mistake, I add them to our NSFW list.

People often ask me for my opinions, thoughts, and information on companies, including whether or not I would work for them. If someone asks about a company on the NSFW list, I tell them exactly why they're on that list and advise them to steer clear of a clearly toxic environment.

I won't publicly call out the company, but if people ask me about them, I won't hold back any information.

I despise how some of these companies treat Black people, especially during interviews. They'll have us jump through hoops, do hours of assessments, and still not have the decency to treat us with basic respect.

They better check themselves before I do.

Jokes aside though, I’d highly recommend taking some time to gather your thoughts and to decompress after you lose your job (if this privilege is accessible to you). 

Everyone deserves rest, and a tired + stressed brain isn’t always capable of making the best decisions.

But if you keep your cool you can recover like Anthony Davis.

That’s the most likely time when the “professional” side might slip.

"What's the salary?"

Interviewer: *Sigh* Yeaahhhhhh about that.

🚩 🚩 🚩 🚩 🚩 

A friend of mine went for 4th interview last week with a company. 

The first red flag was when they went past the first interview stage without asking about his Salary Expectations.

I told him to drop them but he decided to shoot them some bail and roll with it but when they invited him for a 5th and Final ( They always swear it’ll be the last 🙄) interview, he had to just straight up ask them and their response was anything but encouraging.

“Money Talks. Bullshit Walks” is the old saying and its why I always preach that people need to talk money upfront in the initial interview. 

If they don’t ask you for your salary expectations, you should ask for the range budgeted for the role. If they can’t give you that give them a number and see their reaction!

If their reaction to your reasonable request mmakes you feel anything less than good, walk away. 

When you bring up money, it immediately brings the interview to a boiling point. 

Anytime the interviewer responds to your salary inquiry with a sigh or an exhausted sound, RUN.

You don’t have to listen to me but there’s a reason Jamaicans say “who nuh hear must feel”

A reminder: Don't give your two weeks notice until you have a written offer you're happy with in hand, no matter how well the interviews went. 

I would even go so far as to say not to do anything until you have confirmation of a completed Background check or they send over your equipment.  

I even know of some people who take a leave of absence or a prolonged vacation at 1 job to work a few weeks at a new one before giving notice.  

It's a dirty game but so is laying off people during a recession despite all time highs in profits, revenue and in some cases stock prices. You have to protect yourself, your people and your interests. 

On Friday I had to talk a friend out of quitting his job on the spot because he's convinced he absolutely MURDERED a final interview. "That's blessed fam but nothing is real until it's in writing." Is what I said over and over again. 

I get it too because he absolutely hates his current workplace, his manager is one who loves to micromanage. He also finds the job incredibly unfuilling. 

BUT in this economy it's always best to be calculated when making career moves.

The layoffs and rescinded offers are reason enough alone to do your due dilligence.

Thankfully he's agreed not to do anything until the offer comes through but even then this morning I had to call to check in on him and tell him to relax. 

I know that job is testing his patience but you never want to be premature.

There are occasions when Imposter Syndrome beats me down.

If this is a safe space, I'd like to admit that I often struggle with imposter syndrome whenever I feel like I'm lagging behind in my career.

If you're like me, imposter syndrome often leads to a spiral of negative thoughts. Don't even get me started on the anxiety.

Imposter syndrome is difficult and it tends to creep up on us at the worst of times. I try to manage mine by finding comfort in the words my Mom used to say to me whenever I experienced an imposter syndrome crisis or felt frustrated with what seemed like a lack of progress.

The saying goes:

"Where I am at is where I'm at, but it's not where I'm at because I know where I'm going."

If you're reading this, I hope you take it as reassurance and encouragement to be gentle with yourself. 

At the end of the day, your journey is your journey.

Shoutouts to the companies NOT forcing their employees to return to the office, especially the ones who looked at the data and went, "Well damn, productivity is up, morale is up, and our money is up. Let's not do anything to screw this up."

After 3 years of WFH, it's now become commonplace for people to be forced back into the office.

I know for a lot of people, the first thing they do when they receive Return to Office orders is to start calculating the cost of going to an office - something the pandemic proved wasn't really all that necessary.

Life without the commute, it seemed impossible until it wasn't.

A 1-hour commute doesn't seem like a lot until you realize all the time sunk in travel vs what you could have done without it.

Dry cleaning, dog walking, paying for parking at work, time for your loved ones.

The literal cost of forcing people to go back to work isn't just financial but emotional as well.

Shoutouts to the companies who are honoring their commitment to Remote Work, the job market will stabilize one day and people will remember the employers who were good to people and the ones who weren't.

If you're being forced to go back into the office, I'm praying for you. If you're wondering if this is a legitimate reason to start exploring your employment options, It is.

Everyone deserves to Work to Live not Live to Work and WFH/Remote flexibility helps make that a reality for people.

I can still remember the morning ritual of frustration I did in my car as I waited for the cramped ass Go-Train downtown.
