I laughed more today while I was with my Leadership Tyler classmates than I have in a long time and it felt amazing. 

Then, I played pick up soccer this evening like I used to in college. 

I’ve been so focused on growing my coaching practice and taking care of my responsibilities that I think I forgot to be human and do things I enjoy. 

Everyone needs to grow up and mature but that doesn’t mean we forget or abandon the things that bring us joy and energy. 

As Ken Wilber said, “transcend and include.”

One thing I notice about high performance teams is how fast they can pivot due to a specific communication practice.

A concept that redefines communication dynamics, Radical Candor by Kim Scott brings to the table a simple yet groundbreaking approach: Caring personally while challenging directly.

This isn't about sugarcoating issues or skirting around challenges. Nor is it about making ruthless, emotionless decisions. It's about maintaining a balance where constructive criticism meets genuine concern.

Recently I was coaching a leader and was asking my standard kickoff questions about goals and he said something interesting.

He wanted to grow through coaching because he cared deeply about his team and how he impacted them.

In Tim Spiker's book, "The Only Leaders Worth* Following" one of the 2 character traits that research showed accounted for 77% of a leader's effectiveness was Others-Focused.

Part of the definition of Others-Focused in their research was a word you don't hear often - Agapone.

Agapone was defined as being "Unconditionally devoted to the well-being of others."

If you want to become a leader worth following, then you'll need to cultivate Agapone in yourself.

This creates accountability for everyone to get done what they said they would during the most recent Quarterly Strategy Session and creates a cadence that allows the final result to be much better. 
 
Most teams that set some sort of quarterly project (sometimes called Rocks) fall victim to waiting to cram in all of the work until just before the next Quarterly Strategy Session.

Unlike filing your taxes today, no one is going to force you to keep your focus as you grow your organization. 

Most companies fail because they start with a clear vision and consistent execution towards that vision but, overtime, allow the fires that pop up and shiny objects distract them.

Regain your focus this quarter before 2024 gets away from you!

Here’s how:
1. Create or realign around a long term Destination - it should state where you’re going (clear enough that you’ll know when you arrive), when you’ll get there (at least 5 years in the future), and why it’s important. 

2. Reaffirm and state your values - you don’t want to reach your destination and forget WHO you are in the process. It’ll be a hollow victory. 

3. Decide what the 3 most important outcomes are for this quarter - break your 2024 goals into 4 phases and do whatever will set you up for a great Q3.

One of my favorite things about System & Soul is how we create a dashboard of KPIs!

We call it a Scoreboard because KPIs should be telling you, the team, and especially the person that owns them if they are winning or not.

Every role in the Org Chart should have 3 things:
1. A mission that states the desired outcome of that role.

2. A set of 3-5 processes that someone with the Mission you wrote would be responsible for.

3. A set of 3-15 tasks (KPIs) that when done correctly week-over-week or month-over-month will lead to that desired outcome you stated in the Mission!

When you have a that set of KPIs associated with a specific role or function in your organization, then building a company or department Scoreboard becomes easy!

No more pulling numbers out of thin air, copying another company's metrics, or only using industry "standard" benchmarks!

Choose the numbers that are meaningful for you and your organization right now!
