The Audacity of the Outsider: Ty Haney’s Rule-Breaking Vision 🏃‍♀️


She didn't have a background in traditional retail. She didn't want to chase professional athletes. She was a Parsons School of Design dropout with an idea that defied the entire $300 billion activewear industry.

Ty Haney was constantly told the market was "too saturated" and that her concept—focusing on the joy of recreation instead of elite performance—was "too soft."

But what looked like a lack of credentials became her greatest advantage.

She founded Outdoor Voices to introduce a radical counter-vision: a brand focused on #DoingThings and building a community around casual activity.

The Rule-Breaking Movement.

If I were looking for my next Chief Growth & Marketing Officer role right now, my approach would be radically different than most.


I wouldn't waste a minute proving I've done it before. My focus would be on demonstrating how I can do it for them now—and ensuring the company’s vision is big enough to merit the effort.

The shift most executives miss: they talk in the past tense ("I built," "I led"). None of that matters unless you connect it to how you'll move their business forward, starting today.

When I evaluate opportunities, these are my 5 non-negotiables for exponential growth. 🚀

1) Growth Alignment over Silos: I ask: "How are Product, Engineering, and Marketing specifically incentivized to move the same north star metric? Where is the shared math?" 

If I hear about weekly syncs but no common skin in the game, it's a red flag. True alignment isn't meetings; it's shared destiny.

2) AI/ML for Insight, Not Just Reporting: I ask: "How does 'data-driven' move beyond historical reporting to predictive modeling and intelligent automation?" 

If the answer is merely dashboards, it signals a missed opportunity. Numbers only compound when they fuel autonomous systems and inform precise judgment.

3) Brand as a Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) Multiplier: I ask: "How is our Brand narrative quantified as a tangible driver of trust, pricing power, and long-term customer retention?" 

If brand is relegated to 'creative design,' marketing's strategic influence is capped. Brand is a core growth engine.

4) Tolerance for Foundational Bets: I ask: "What specific budget is allocated for long-term growth bets that might not show ROI until year two or three?" 

Most companies want relief, not sustainable growth. Compound growth requires investing in enduring assets, not chasing quick wins.

5) Shared CLV/CAC Math Across the Business: I ask: "Where is the single, cross-functional dashboard that provides a transparent, shared view of Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) and Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) for every critical stakeholder?" 

If incentives aren't aligned to the same fundamental unit economics, growth at scale requires shared truth.

When you're in hyper-growth trenches, you see executive interviews less like a test and more like a mirror.

You're not trying to impress. You're trying to fundamentally understand if the growth engine is built to drive a category, not just a successful quarter.

👉 Can I lead transformative growth here? Can I challenge the status quo? Can I build something that truly compounds for decades?

These are the only questions that matter. Everything else is a buzzword buffet on a resume.
