Why you should rethink how your website fits into your business...

Your website is not there to answer every question your customer may have.

It's there to drive a specific group of people to a specific place.

If you don't know who you are targeting, and where you are taking them—you're in trouble.

Your website should act as a guide. Not a detailed map.

It's easy for you to over-explain on your website.

The problem is, this turns people away.

A great example is trail markers. If you are on a hike, you can't follow the GPS on your phone to make sure every step is correct.

Instead, the trail markers serve as a general guide to ensure you are on the right path.

Confusion is one of the primary reasons people leave websites.

If you confuse your website visitor, they will leave faster than you think.

Is your website acting like a guide?

In mobile design, less is more.

3 tips for a mobile design that works. 👇

Mobile website design is drastically different from desktop design.

On a mobile design, you need to focus on only the essentials.

1/ Remove any graphics that distract the user from the content.

People scroll quickly on their phones. Even faster than on a desktop device.

Don't waste anytime getting to the point.

2/ Ensure the copy is clear. The copy is the number one priority with mobile design.

If the copy takes a back seat to illustrations, graphics, or images, you will confuse your customer.

3/ Hierarchy is critical.

With smaller real estate to work with, you need to focus on where the eye goes on mobile.

This might mean changing the font size, or decreasing image sizes.

Remember to always keep the goal in mind.

You need to guide the user on a journey.

Don't skip this step.

There are 3 primary benefits of using a sitemap before ever touching the design or development. 👇

Removing yourself from the details allows you to make the best decisions for your website.

Zoom out, and make sure everything you need is included.

When you don't perform a sitemap, you are at risk of the website feeling all over the place.

Consistency allows you to make sure everything is in sync.

Your website is like a puzzle. You need all the pieces to fit together to get across the right message.

3/ 🎯 Clarity

If you follow my content at all, you know what I like to say—clarity > clever.

The sitemap gives you the ability to ensure clarity comes across in every page, section, and copy.

When looking at the sitemap, you can more easily determine what stands out and cause confusion.

Remove those now. It's much easier to remove confusing sections in the sitemap than once you build the website.
