I muted my Slack notifications for my office team (12 people who all work from home).

I was going to be out of the office for a few days.

Upon my return, I quickly scanned messages for anything I needed to address.

I didn’t find any issues or questions.

What I found was camaraderie.

Humor.

Engagement.

Someone said “I’m headed out to a doctor's appointment, be back soon.”

And people wishing them well.

Someone said “I’m going to shower, eat lunch, pick up my kid from school,” and the team responding with well wishes for a good lunch or drive safely.

One of our Client Managers was having a bad day.

I saw notes of encouragement, “you got this” or “you are amazing at your job, don’t be so hard on yourself.”

Someone started off the day with “Happy Monday” another “good morning fabulous ladies!”

I saw no one asking for permission to leave early, they know it’s fine.

I saw no one asking for permission to go to an appointment, put their kids first, they know it’s encouraged.

I only saw notes of “I’ll cover for you” or “have fun!”

In the 3 days I was out, there were over 300 exchanges.

Don’t let anyone tell you that can’t work from home and be collaborative.

It’s not true.

A fun, challenging, collaborative, and successful team can be anywhere.

Slack says it’s so.

Everyone is hiring, but no one is getting hired.

Company websites have hundreds, sometimes thousands of jobs available, and they stay on there.

And get reposted, over and over.

I saw a story about how companies are outsourcing accounting jobs because they cannot find accountants in the US.

I call bullshit.

Just this morning I saw at least 50 accountants looking for jobs but can't get interviews.

People didn't disappear.

Millions looking for jobs.

Hiring is paralyzed because it chooses to be.

When you create a hiring process that is so involved, so intricate, so long, with so many layers, it becomes impossible to make a decision.

Let go of the OLD processes and try something new.

Shorter. Quicker. Smarter.

I got a note from a very unhappy Recruiter asking me to STOP telling candidates to be "pushy" during the interview process.

She said, "a lot of people read your posts, but the hiring/recruiting process takes time."

My response? "I will never stop telling people to ask questions, ask for feedback, ask about timelines.

Communication goes a LONG way for candidates.

They've done what YOU asked, and how damn hard is it to let someone know they did not get selected, are still in the running, or it will be 2 or 3 more weeks until a decision is made?

The problem is not ME, the problem is YOU!"

Probably not the response she expected.

Look, it's your time, it's your dime, it's your opportunity.

If you've taken the time to go through the interview process, you deserve to know the result of your efforts.

It's really that simple.

If a former Chief Financial Officer wants to come work for you in your accounting department, do it!

Or a previous Director of Sales wants to be a sales rep for you, hire them!

I once had a former Agent from a US Government Intelligence Agency want to work for us as a part-time interviewer.

She literally interrogated people for a living for over 20+ years.

Of course I hired her and she was amazing!

There is no such thing as overqualified.

If you are lucky enough to have someone of that caliber want to come to work on your team, you'd be a fool to pass them up.

All of this 'overqualified' nonsense has gone too far.

What are you afraid of? 
That someone might be smarter than you? 

I am surrounded by people EVERY DAY that are smarter than me.

And for that, I am incredibly grateful :)

"It sounds like you are too money driven."

This is a statement, said by a recruiter, to a client of ours who was contacted about a job.

He asked up front, right in the FIRST conversation.

What is the salary range for this job?

That was her response.....

Let's stop kidding ourselves.

It is the first thing most people want to know.

I know, I know, money is not the most important thing, yada, yada, yada.

But you know what? It's right damn near at the top.

99.9999% of the people in the workforce are doing it for the money.

Getting some fulfillment from your job? BONUS!

Actually like your co-workers? AWESOME!

Can stand your boss at least 50% of the time? EXCELLENT!!

I love my staff, but I am not dumb enough to think they show up every day just to bask in the glow of my glorious leadership.

Hell no.

It's because every Friday I drop $$ mula in their accounts.

And maybe a little bit because I am nice. And we have fun.

So, stop with the politically correct 'we don't talk about money until the 27th interview' because it is all bullshit.

If I am empowering women and families, paying way above market rates and paying them enough to live nice lives, I am shouting it from the rooftops.

If someone is trying to sell you on culture, perks or teambuilding activities....

I am here to tell you that you can't put your kid through college with daily yoga classes and Pizza Fridays.

It's okay to ask what you will be paid.

I used to tell our clients that 20% of the job posts you see online are no longer valid.

Maybe they've already been filled.

Maybe they are already in the process of hiring.

Or maybe the job was pulled.

Then, it went to 30%, then 40%....

And now, I am convinced that over 50% of the jobs you see online are not actually jobs that are being filled.

For one reason or another, posts go up, stay up, and never seem to get taken down when that role has been filled or cancelled.

So to ANYONE involved in hiring.....

Please take down job postings that you aren’t REALLY hiring for. 

You and I both know…..

You’re never, ever, ever going to read those applications in the future and give someone a call. 

You aren’t going to “hold on” to that resume and consider that person for future opportunities. 

Stop collecting resumes and applicants like some kind of trophy collection. 

And remember it’s REAL people behind those resumes. 

And lying or deceiving hopeful jobseekers with phantom job openings is gross.

2 weeks notice is a courtesy.

Not a requirement.

No one can make you stay at a job, regardless of how "official" their policy is.

That's the definition of 'at will' employment.

Employers rarely give YOU 2 weeks notice when they lay you off....

But you are being 'unprofessional' when you don't give them notice.

Isn't that funny how it all works?

Job market observation. 


Right now is the toughest job market I’ve ever seen. 

You have to apply for hundreds of jobs before you start getting interviews. 

Return rate is around 2 to 4%. 

And that’s if you have a really good resume. 

But nothing lasts forever. 

Remember the great resignation? 

You could submit your resume in crayon and get 5 offers in a week. 

Everyone was hiring. 

Everyone was panicking. 

Everyone was offering top dollar. 

It’s all very cyclical…

Those days will be back. 

Probably sooner than we think. 

Right now we are in The Great Burnout. 

Can someone patent that phrase for me?  😀

People doing the jobs of two or three people because hiring is stalled. 

It can’t last. 

It won’t last.

I predict that the tide will turn, we’ll see a candidates market in the fall. 

Layoffs are still happening but slowing down. 

Hiring is picking up, but slowly. 

Hang in there, your time is coming. 

Nothing lasts forever. 

This too shall pass. 

It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass.

Anything more than 2 or 3 interviews for a job is too many.

There is just no way around it.

If you cannot decide on a candidate after reading the resume...

Looking at the application...

Talking twice or three times...

YOU should not be involved in the hiring process.

Period.

People who KNOW how to hire the right candidates typically get a pretty good idea in the first 30 minutes.

Anything beyond that...YOU need to do better.

Not the candidate.

Ineptitude, hesitation, inexperience, lack of confidence or indecision has no place in the hiring process.

If a candidate is interviewing with you....

They are interviewing with other companies too. 

Your job is not the only game in town. 

A client of ours recently turned down a job that she’s been interviewing with for 3 months. 

3 months. 

Countless Zoom calls, a sales plan presentation, and chats with everyone from HR to CEO. 

Why did she turn it down? 

2 weeks ago, an old colleague reached out to her about a job with his company, a well established pharmaceutical industry leader. 

1 Zoom call, 1 interview with the Sales Manager, an offer was made. 

She accepted. 

2 weeks. 

They made an offer in 2 weeks. 

She’s got a 22 year track record of kicking ass. 

They didn’t need 3 months of talking, talking, talking, talking. 

When she removed herself from the interview process from the other job, the recruiter was genuinely flabbergasted. 

“We’ve got months invested in you” she was told. 

My client told her that she has 48 years invested in herself.


Life moves fast. 

Hiring decisions move slow.

Nobody wants to take an assessment.

No, they don't want to meet the 27 people on your leadership team.

No, they don't care about your culture, your perks, your Friday Pizza parties.

No, they don't want to have a round table discussion about future opportunities.  Or heaven forbid, 'Informational Interviews.'

They want a job.
A paycheck.
Something to do with their time/talent/experience/education.

I had a client travel from NYC to Chicago, by car, to interview at a company in an industry she's been working in for 20 years.

Her interview was with an internal recruiter who just got a new boyfriend.

For 15 minutes, that's what they chatted about.

My client tried to interject information about her history.  

Her numbers.  

Her EXTENSIVE knowledge of the industry.

About half way through, and getting clearly frustrated by the lack of focus of the interview, she got a bit upset.

The interviewer said to her, 'You seem nervous.'

My clients said, "Yes, I am f*cking nervous, I need a job."

Needless to say, that was a wasted trip 🤣 .

That's the bottom line.

People need jobs.  

Focus on that.

Build on that.

And stop with the nonsense.

A client of mine just accepted a $250K job offer.

This is not odd, as we work with mostly executives and their salaries tend to be pretty high.

But in his last job, he made just over $160K.

He started off as a Senior Accountant for a medium sized business, and within 3 years, he was doing the work of a Corporate Controller.  

They NEVER gave him the title, they did give him some additional money.

It was a big job, with a lot of moving parts, and a team of 6 people.

Every year, he got a raise, but he never got the 'promotion.'

He thinks the company didn't want it to 'go to his head' or have him demanding more than they were willing to give.

He totally transformed their finances.

He led them through 2 acquisitions.

He took them from using spreadsheets to an actual accounting system.

He saved them millions of dollars by renegotiating their vendor contracts and eliminating expenses.

When we did his resume, we didn't treat him like an Accountant.

We treated him like the Corporate Controller he is.

We even used the term "Corporate Controller Equivalent" on his resume. 

He knew his value. 

Employers agreed.

Old salaries don't define your value.

Neither do titles that don't actually describe what you do.

How you lead, innovate, transform and deliver DOES.

A fifty-something client of ours has been looking for a new job.

He's an experienced Operations guy.

Like many others, he's been struggling.

He gets interviews, then the process lags, it goes on too long....you know, the usual. 

He applied for a job with a company that he's liked for a long time.

Was excited to see a role posted, and hit "apply." 

It was a little above his level of experience, but thought, 'what the hell.'

A day later, he gets a call  from their internal recruiter.

She says, "I like your resume a lot. 😀 But, it doesn't look like you have all the qualifications we are requiring for this position.

Can you take a minute and tell me about your knowledge of this role and why you thought you should apply?" 

✅ First, he can't believe they are actually having a conversation.
✅Second, he gives her his BEST pitch.
✅Right then and there.

Then she said "I am going to send you an email. I want you to reply to that email and write everything you just told me, and I will forward that to the hiring manager." 

Within 2 days, they scheduled him with the hiring manager.

Interview goes great.

A few days later, the recruiter emails him, and says "I wanted to update you on the process. We are very near to making a final decision and I appreciate your patience."

He replies with a 'Thank you.' 

She THEN says, "I will be on vacation next week but if you need anything my emails will forward to the person who is covering for me." 

He is astonished.

It's such a rare example of professionalism in the recruiting process.

He's still waiting for the final answer, which will come next week.

He's encouraged, positive, and excited about the role.

✅We are simple creatures.
✅A little respect.
✅A little professionalism.
✅A little communication.

It's all candidates want.  

Is that too much to ask?

I have big feet 😂😂😂. 

Ladies size 10. 

Last weekend, my husband and I took a long weekend trip to Florida. 

As we were meandering around the beach town where we were staying….

I wandered into a boutique store. 

I immediately spotted an adorable pair of sandals I wanted. 

I waited for the very well dressed, very well put together sales lady ask me if I needed help. 

She did. 

And I asked her if she had these in a size 10. 

She kind of sniffed and looked at me over the top of her glasses, and said “We do not carry sizes that large.”

“No problem” I said, and thanked her for her “help.”

Old insecurities threatened to bubble up. 

When I was in the 5th grade, I was already 5 ft 8 with size 10 feet. 

Skinny, taller than my female classmates, and desperately lanky with not a curve in sight. 

I always felt a little out of place. 

But I’m (much) older now and wiser. 

My self consciousness lasted a nano second before I shook it off. 

Guess what? 

The most popular shoe size for ladies is 9 or 10. 

The most popular dress size in the USA is 12 to 14.

Not everyone is a size 2 with size 6 feet. 

In fact, hardly anyone is. 

While every single one of us aspires to something…..longer hair, less wrinkles, a few pounds lighter….

We are perfect just the way we are. 

Big feet and all.

A Human Resources Executive in the healthcare industry reached out to me here on LinkedIn.

She was hired by her current employer to revolutionize their hiring practices.

They were wildly understaffed, churn was through the roof, and they could not attract enough qualified applicants.

She wanted to know if I would be willing to have a conversation with her about the things I post about the hiring process.

We scheduled a meeting, had a conversation, and she asked me if I could do some consulting for them, since I am privy to hiring practices, trends, and real candidate feedback.

I agreed, and we had several meetings.

She came up with a phenomenal plan to reduce their time to fill.

To improve the candidate’s experience.

To reduce the number of candidates they interview.

To totally transform WHO is involved in hiring (moving from recruiters to hiring managers).

A complete and total overhaul of job descriptions/job requirements.

Elimination of degree requirements for jobs that don't really need one.

Moving from 40+ different salary bands to 16.

Publishing salary ranges, years of experience requirements, and number of interviews in the hiring process.

It took 6 months, and it was set to revolutionize their hiring outcomes by over 1000%. 

I was so excited for her, the hospital (who is struggling mightily with hiring and retention), and everyone involved.

So, what happened?

She presented it all to the executive leadership team.

And 2 days later she got fired.

Crazy?

Absolutely. 

Turns out, they were not as ready for a revolution as they said.

What was presented to them as a comprehensive plan to reduce their staff shortages, reduce the churn, reduce the burnout of their staff doing the jobs of 3 and 4 people....wasn't as important to them as a less than 6% increase in hiring costs.

So, in other words, they'd rather just work their existing employees to death instead of trying to improve their hiring processes to ease the load.

To save a few bucks.

This is what HR leaders are dealing with.

So instead of being a success story in her job, she became a client instead.

She totally bailed on the healthcare industry, and now is a Chief Human Resources Officer for a start-up.

They love her and listen/adopt all her ideas.

Of course people prefer to work from home. 

Have you seen how people are getting laid off? 

Like they don’t matter or have any feelings? 

It’s degrading and shameful to treat loyal, hardworking, long time people like they are garbage. 

Home is safe. 

Home is comfortable. 

At home, we can be a little bit insulated from bullies, narcissists….

Not to mention blatant sexism and discrimination. 

Of course it still happens, but if it’s less “in your face” when you work from home. 

Instead of demanding that people come back “to the office”, take a good hard look why people don’t want to. 

I am 100% certain that’s it’s not all about the commute.

We talk to a minimum of 450+ new jobseekers/customers every week. 

Most of them are STILL looking for remote jobs.

A resume client of ours just turned down a $165k job offer. 

Crazy? 

Not at all. 

She’s a single mom, picking up 2 kids and moving across the country for this new job. 

The real offer was $145k and a $20k sign on bonus. 

Which, in theory, sounds great. 

But in reality, it’s not. 

She told them she needed $170k to make it work. 

In fact, $170k was right in the their range. 

But when the offer came, it was packaged a little “creatively.”

When she crunched the numbers, she can’t make it work. 

The job she’d be moving for is in a place with a high cost of living. 

Her current employer pays 100% of her health insurance premiums. 

The new employer only pays 80%. 

She’d be giving up 5 weeks of vacation. 

And starting her new job with 3. 

I’m not a huge fan of the sign on bonus. 

I know they make you feel like a world class athlete to get that “up front money”….

But honestly, you are just being trapped. 

I’ve seen plenty of people scrambling to pay back sign on bonuses when they wanted to bail on a shitty job before the year was up. 

So, she’s passing on the offer and continuing in her search. 

One that includes more vacation, not less.

I got a text from a customer this morning that he got laid off.

On Good Friday.

Right as he logged in to start working.

He'd been with the company for 8 years.

At 9 AM he got a call from HR.

At 9:04 he was locked out.

We worked with him several months ago to get his resume in shape.

He was not looking for a job.

He was going to use it for an internal promotion that he was after.

Plus, he had not updated it since he graduated college (16 years ago).

I told him how sorry that I was to hear it.  

He lost his job, along with 30 of his co-workers.

It's never a good time to lose your job.

Not on a holiday weekend.

Not on a Friday afternoon.

Not on a Tuesday at lunch.

He said that he grabbed his stuff, headed home, and had breakfast with his wife.

Then he immediately started networking, sending his resume to friends, connections, old co-workers and filled out a few applications.

He's freaked out.

But not as freaked out as he would have been if he hadn't been a little bit prepared.

So, this weekend, he's going to relax, enjoy Easter, be grateful for his family, and the blessings he's been given.

On Monday, he's going to join the millions of job seekers in the USA who are looking for a lifeline, a new beginning, and a company who won't relegate his hard work to a 4 minute after thought.
